[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T239284: Show number of senses in lexeme search results
Mahir256 added a comment. The code which generates the description lives at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/diffusion/EWLC/browse/master/src/Hooks.php$137, and the functions `getStatementCount()` and `getFormCount()` live in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/diffusion/EWLC/browse/master/src/LexemeResult.php$87 . It seems like it should be enough to add a new function `getSenseCount()` (similar to `getFormCount()`—is there a "SenseField::NAME" term defined someplace?) and then adjust the function call in Hooks.php and the translatable message at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/diffusion/EWLE/browse/master/i18n/qqq.json$157 . (The language using the Hanifi script was added in T272442 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T272442>.) Given that there are now 108 Wikidata lexemes in Rohingya and (on the strength of the resources @mrephabricator and I have access to) the potential for somewhere close to 6,000 lexemes in that language to exist, it would be beneficial to switch away from the private-use code 'rhg-x-Q118298835' currently in use for Arabic script representations. As there are both form identifiers <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P10830> and sense identifiers <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P11298>, having `wikidata:identifiers` for forms and senses would be useful, and as there are around 12.1 million forms and around 300,000 senses, I am willing to supplement Nikki's offer by removing 6.7 million more unnecessary triples from a variety of places. (As a follow-up to Nikki's periodic reminder, I'd like to suggest that any postponement of related automatic description functionality of the form "let's wait for Wikifunctions to launch" be rethought on account of the numerous delays in that project.) [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T303677: Provide auto-generated descriptions for certain classes of items
Mahir256 created this task. Mahir256 added a project: Wikidata. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION T91981 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T91981> was closed without comment in late 2020 (was it out of staleness?) despite the only objections to the issue provided being made over the course of a few days in August 2015. At that time Blazegraph was still maintained and there were between 20 and 21 million items in Wikidata (and possibly a sense of optimism in the air regarding how descriptions on individual items would turn out). Now there are more than 97 million items, due primarily to the imports of scientific articles in particular—with astronomical objects coming later, to boot—and we routinely speak of a potential Blazegraph failure <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:SPARQL_query_service/Blazegraph_failure_playbook> and the need to seek alternatives to that software. One way that we might forestall a Blazegraph failure without disturbing people is to reduce the amount of excess triples that actually need to be separately stored, and one such place from which triples might be taken out is the set of descriptions. Like it or not, there are certain classes of items that simply **//will not//** get descriptions more imaginative or customized or detailed than the ones which over time have been added to them in different languages. Yet there are users whose entire existence on Wikidata, judging from their edit history, seems to be the addition and maintenance of these repetitive/unimaginative/etc. descriptions, needing to run so many batches of edits just to correct a single letter across millions of items. An automatic description generation mechanism based on language and item class (following a P31/P279+ path, possibly involving a few other selected properties), whose outputs may be adjusted in exactly one place rather than in millions of items separately, would at least free these users of their labors, and would allow us to remove the excess of triples for their corresponding non-automatic but equally repetitive/unimaginative/etc. counterparts. Some classes of items that would dearly benefit from such a thing //immediately// include items for 1. scientific articles (33,000,000+), 2. Wikimedia categories (5,000,000+), 3. Wikimedia templates (~1,000,000), 4. stars (~3,000,000), 5. galaxies (~2,000,000), 6. Unicode characters (~150,000), 7. researchers (200,000+) This is already near //half// the total number of items on Wikidata at the moment, and //there are likely more item classes// that are missing, and //there are likely more items in the noted classes// that will add to the above numbers. **//Note to developers and other maintainers: It is vigorously beseeched//** that this task not be closed as a duplicate of the previous task, since circumstances have significantly changed over the last six and a half years. We have an as-yet unused "Query:" namespace <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:AllPages?from=&to=&namespace=122> ; perhaps it could be opened for storing queries longer than 2000 characters? (A redirection mechanism such that a visit to any page in that namespace takes you to query.wikidata.org might be useful, and there ought to be a system, similar to what is done with CSS pages, that ensures that a query is syntactically correct before it can be saved to that namespace.) [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T285156: Add termbox language code mul
Mahir256 added a comment. **//The following is a comment made in another forum regarding this ticket by User:Nikki,// ** who has allowed me to repost it here after some copy-editing in good faith: Regarding the fallback chain: English should fall back to mul too (as Mahir originally wrote), or otherwise we would have to duplicate everything from mul under English as well (and having everything **except** English fall back to mul has an icky "English is special" vibe). Regarding which script subtags to add: I think it would make sense to start with **only** mul and revisit whether (and which) script-specific codes would be useful later. I think there is a clear use case for a script-independent code which applies to any language (e.g. all the examples I provided are things which are by definition that string regardless of language—some use Latin characters but they're still valid for all languages, e.g. the ISO country code for Switzerland is still "CH" in Arabic or Russian, in the same way that the symbol for pi is π even in English) but it's less clear how useful individual script-specific codes would be. I did a bit of analysis and there are 521 language codes usable for labels. 343 are for Latin, 55 for Cyrillic, 34 for Arabic, 16 for Devanagari, 10 for Traditional Chinese and 7 for Simplified Chinese. The other 36 scripts are associated with fewer than 5 language codes. 2/3 of all the the language codes are thus for Latin. Regarding mul-latn: I'm not sure what the point of having both mul and mul-latn would be. Doesn't that imply that there's a situation where mul would be different from mul-latn **and** that people would be specifically requesting mul and nothing else (since anything else would fall back to English and mul-latn first)? Regarding mul-cyrl and mul-arab: in theory there's enough language codes using those scripts that mul might make sense, but I looked up a bunch of leaders of countries which use Cyrillic or Arabic script (as items I thought would be likely to have pages in those languages) and the majority only had 3-5 identical Cyrillic or Arabic labels, so I haven't yet found evidence that it's common for a lot of languages to share the same Cyrillic or Arabic label in practice. Regarding mul-deva: I didn't look into Devanagari, but I would be very surprised if the situation there is any different from mul-cyrl and mul-arab. Regarding mul-hans and mul-hant: I don't think there's any obvious benefit to having those. All of the Simplified/Traditional Chinese language codes are for languages in the zh macrolanguage. zh-classical and zh-yue shouldn't be used—a bot already replaces them with lzh and yue. zh, zh-cn, zh-my, zh-sg, gan-hans and wuu already fall back to zh-hans and gan, gan-hant, lzh, zh-hk, zh-mo and zh-tw already fall back to zh-hant. Only nan-hani and yue don't have any fallbacks defined…I don't know why yue doesn't, but nan-hani is a code added for Wikidata and **should** really fall back to nan or zh-hant. Either way, zh-hans/zh-hant are approximately equal to mul-hans/mul-hant and even if we define a distinction between them, I'm very sceptical that we could **maintain** a distinction. I'd be interested to learn of a situation in which the addition of a label in this code with the intent described //would// cause things to backfire. > Are any of these actually useful? This task is not intended to answer this question; since someone has found it useful to have access to this specific string in every language, using 'mul' is a more efficient way to address that. > Wikipedia disambiguation pages are handled very badly in general on Wikidata. It requires real structure and not a language code hack. Can you elaborate of what's not "real" about the mul code with respect to disambiguation pages? While I'm sure there's much to improve for that category of item, that's not necessarily an argument against the introduction of this code for other purposes demonstrated. > This sounds like the right behavior. What if in some language the label was different? Asking seriously. If the label in some other language is different from the "mul" one, then there's absolutely no harm for another language to add a different label. With respect to astronomical objects, on the typical multi-labeled item, only the Bengali label (and the Malayalam one, if it exists) is different from the rest, and thus would be preserved in the presence of a "mul" code; all others, being identical to that of the "mul" code, would be eliminated. (Again, if later one of those languages needs a different label from that of the 'mul' code, it is free to add that //different// label, and //not// the same one.) > As with the galaxy, it doesn't look wrong. I have been semi-regularly migrating occasional additions of labels/descriptions/aliases in the languages codes noted in my original comment since that comment, in addition to an "no" to "nb" migration with @jhsoby's approval. The sooner these codes can be disallowed, the less work this will be for everyone. Mahir256 created this task. Mahir256 added projects: Language codes, Wikidata. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION This ticket is to add language codes for the representations of lemmata and forms in a number of languages: - Hausa in the Arabic script (Ajami), since Hausa is one of the focus languages of the Abstract Wikipedia; - Manchu, as a language written in the Mongolian script whose code is less controversial than mvf; - Sumerian (in its cuneiform and Latin-script representations), because we have L1 and it, out of all lexemes, should at least be modeled correctly; - German Sign Language, by analogy with the American equivalent having one and the British one being requested in another ticket; and - Klingon (in its pIqaD and Latin forms), so that those processing lexemes in that language can better process it. The first three have some publicly available resources listed on this page <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Lexicographical_data/Documentation/Resources>, while the last two at least have non-endangered communities using them. @Amire80 @jhsoby What do you say? Mahir256 created this task. Mahir256 added projects: Language codes, Wikidata Lexicographical data, Wikidata. TASK DESCRIPTION This ticket is to add language codes for the representations of lexemes and forms in American English. As there are already separate codes for British and Canadian English (inherited from the quirks which led to their inclusion as termbox languages), and given that there are a number of lexemes for which American English spellings are distinct from what might be considered an international de facto standard, it would make sense to be able to better distinguish these in lemmata and forms rather than consign them to the 'ambiguous' (i.e. not otherwise qualified) realm. @amire80 @jhsoby What do you say? After some tinkering around to try to make something happen, a lexeme did get created as L447292 (albeit without the sense); trying to add just the sense to that lexeme using wbeditentity is greeting me with the same message. It is clearly possible to assemble entire items in a single go (that's at least what QuickStatements is able to do); here's hoping this will soon be entirely possible with lexemes. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T274373: Choose pilot languages for Abstract Wikipedia and improvements for Wikidata Lexicographic extensions
Mahir256 added a comment. Some thoughts I had upon learning of this task (which may or may not be agreed with, but so it may go): - The four languages should satisfy the following: - One should have a well-developed Wikipedia and have enough of an active userbase, that we can more readily compare the quality of the generated output against a wide variety of different base cases //and// get lots of feedback from that language community on the development of that particular language's implementations. - One should have a less-well-developed Wikipedia but have enough of an active userbase, that starting from the sorts of text examples available in that Wikipedia we can levy sufficient feedback from that language community on that language's implementations to generate more "complex passages" than may otherwise be present on that wiki (where "complex" depends on the current state of that wiki's typical pages). - One should either have a Wikipedia much less developed than that of the previous language (such as one recently created) //or// have an active Incubator project, that we can demonstrate the ability of this system to bootstrap new Wikimedia projects with preliminary text passages that can be used for manual expansion by other editors later if so desired. - One should not have a Wikipedia (and should either have an inactive Incubator project or have none at all), that we can demonstrate the ability of this system to represent knowledge anew in a language for which any sort of encyclopedic effort hasn't ever been sufficiently undertaken before. - The languages should all be rather disparate, in order to address as wide a range of issues that may crop up in other languages as possible. Just being geographically or genealogically separate may not be enough here. - At least one of these languages should not be written in the Latin script, not just to put some attention into script conversion tools (à la T32759 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T32759> and friends) but also to avoid "cheating" (the temptation to simply draw in English terms wholesale to save time and effort on the implementation). If two of them do not use the Latin script, then the two types of writing systems should be different enough (e.g. not two alphabets or two abugidas). - At least one of these languages should have sufficient dialect variation, reflected either in the lexicographical data for that language or in that language's implementation, that it becomes conceivable to control the passages produced based on the desired dialect to be expressed. One possible set of languages that satisfies the above is [German, Bengali, Dagbani, Miami-Illinois]. Another possible set is [Swedish, Malayalam, Moroccan Arabic, Osage]. (I may come back and revise these proposed criteria, at which point these possible sets may also change.) Mahir256 added a comment. This seems to be part of a general problem of language fallback not working when searching for grammatical features. When using Bengali as the interface language, for example, searching for "singu" does not return "singular" as one might expect; one //has// to search for "একবচন" to get the same item. I suspect that Nikki using British English as an interface language and not being able to use "sg" (an alias in "en", "de", and "cs" but not "en-gb") is another manifestation of that. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T272442: Add lexeme language codes ccp, ccp-beng, rhg-rohg
Mahir256 added a comment. In the case of Chakma, there are cases of resources, such as those hosted by https://github.com/kalpataruboiChakma/, using both the Bengali script and the Chakma script, between which maintaining correspondences in lemmata/forms with different representations would be useful. Having `ccp` unqualified (in line with the script used on Incubator) and `ccp-beng` as language codes would thus not be controversial in my view. In the case of Rohingya, however, there are disparate groups within the community that separately use the Latin <https://www.rohingyalanguage.com/> and Hanifi <https://www.rohingyazc.com/> scripts, and among those using the Latin script most outside the community (such as the Australian government <https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/information-in-your-language/rohingya>, the SBS <https://www.sbs.com.au/language/rohingya>, and even Milwaukee <https://mps.milwaukee.k12.wi.us/MPS-English/CFO/Nutrition/Resources/Meal-Bundle-Instructions/MealBundleInstructionsFinal1_Rohingya.pdf>) use the "Rohingyalish" system while some others <https://learnrohingya.com/> may use a somewhat different system. Because of this split in script usage, I'd like to avoid courting potential controversy on Wikidata by suggesting that one script should be preferred over the others through an unqualified language code (especially since the Latin script is pursued by those who may find it easier to disseminate for both simplicity and technical reasons). I do not plan to add representations for lemmata/forms in the Latin script as personally I find it a bit deficient in capturing some sounds in the language well, although I'm not against someone else later proposing the `rhg-latn` code if they can enforce the use of one Latin-script system over another. I am not aware of individuals planning to add lexemes in these languages, and I have not got in touch with anyone from these communities, especially the latter, who are working on documenting their languages (although I am open to doing so once the framework of Wikidata's lexicographical data can be better explained to them using examples from their own languages). I am interested in modeling information within the framework of Wikidata's lexicographical data about languoids in the Eastern Indo-Aryan dialect continuum ranging from Manbhumi in the southwest to Sylheti in the northeast, from Rohingya in the southeast to Rangpuri in the northwest. To this end I've collected a number of references about varieties across this region, which I am citing when creating lexemes in these varieties, but such references for Chakma and Rohingya are rather scattered and less stable than the other varieties (mostly books with WorldCat entries and scans). Rather than waiting for more concentrated and stable resources to come about, the fate of these peoples by which time is less certain, I plan to incorporate these scattered resources as individual citations on lexemes. I do not intend to make my own judgments regarding grammatical inflections thereof--not even if paradigms are given in a reference, as irregularities may not be consistent--so the lexemes themselves may be comparatively empty (with only one form and only one sense), but the circumstances of their use, as well as their relationships with other lexemes in related varieties--and also with other languages for etymological reasons--can be better drawn out with lexicographical data. A first step in making this entire endeavor easier would be to add the appropriate language codes for these languages. I hope my efforts in this regard can serve as a model for those wishing to handle other dialect continua using Wikidata's lexicographical data in their respective parts of the world. (It's interesting that these questions were not also asked of T271589 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T271589>.) (There is evidence of Rohingya being written in scripts other than Hanifi, such as Arabic, Latin, and sometimes Burmese, and the request for the specific script subtag for Rohingya is intended to avoid an unexpressed preference, via an unqualified language code, for one script over another, and to allow for future requests for other script codes when desired by others.) Mahir256 added a comment. @Amire80 To my knowledge it is not mandated anywhere that all variants of the representation of a lexeme lemma/form must use Q number private use subtags, but rather such uses are possible if other existing subtags within BCP47 cannot adequately indicate the necessary differences. The indication of Japanese written in different scripts can already be done with the BCP47 script subtag, so //(¡¡¡)within the scope of language codes(!!!)// the items I mentioned which are currently being used for those indications are redundant. Also, as I noted above, the distinction between kyujitai and shinjitai does not lend itself to a non-private-use indicator within the set of possible "ja" language tags, so this task is not meant to discourage the use of those private use subtags in that case. And besides, with respect to items, we already have language tags with different ISO 15924 codes for Tunisian Arabic, Crimean Tatar, Goan Konkani, Eastern Canadian Inuktitut, Kazakh, Kashmiri, Kurmanji, Megleno-Romanian, Tachelhit, Serbian, Tajik, Tatar, Uyghur, and Uzbek <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Mr._Ibrahem/Language_statistics_for_items>, so there is clearly a precedent for the inclusion of codes of the sort which are the subject of this task. This does not yield a number that I would expect; for a language like Khowar (khw), which is not updated frequently (or at all?) on Wikidata, I obtained a number close to 270k when searching "haslabel:khw" today, which compared to the numbers in this table <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_India/India_statistics> for that language doesn't make much sense. Beyond this, however, there was an element of convenience in being able to obtain such a number for a small set of languages in one go (maybe not all languages at once, but perhaps in segments?), and I was hoping to replicate this element by rewriting this query to use the new databases. Mahir256 added subscribers: Pasleim, Mahir256. Mahir256 added a comment. I have a query, https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/18763, that returns label/description/alias statistics for a set of languages (also mentioned in T197161#4300061 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T197161#4300061>). This was derived from a query used by @Pasleim to update this table <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Pasleim/Language_statistics_for_items> (which worked until the end of May) and its South Asian counterpart <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_India/India_statistics> (which worked up until wb_terms updates got turned off). I tried to rewrite the Quarry query to use the new databases (https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/41692), but running this has not yet succeeded, either using Quarry or directly on tools-login. I am not sure whether this rewritten query can be simplified beyond what's written at present, so I was hoping there might be a better way of obtaining these statistics via SQL that does not presently time out. Mahir256 added subscribers: Neechalkaran, Mahir78, Mahir256. Mahir256 added a comment. To present a more concrete use case for such functionality, @debt, the infoboxes on articles for localities in India have slots listing the national/state-level parliamentary constituencies that they're located in along with the current representatives in those constituencies. These slots, which at one point were prefilled from Wikidata, no longer work since the misuses of P585 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P585> ("point in time") on the Wikidata items for those constituencies that allowed such information to be present have been removed. In the absence of a property linking a Wikidata item about a constituency to an election involving that constituency (to use the example of a national-level constituency in Kolkata, from Q3348171 to Q63988950), it would be helpful to obtain a list of items which link back to an item for a constituency via something akin to haswbstatement (in this case, to continue using the previous example, akin to haswbstatement:P1001 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P1001>=Q3348171) so that the most recent election information (from electorate size to successful candidates to numbers of spoilt votes, to name a few facts) could thus be obtained with a few more steps. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T208489: Create LilyPond datatype
Mahir256 added a comment. Ideas regarding the open questions in the task description: Yes. As a matter of fact, since the datatype opens up the possibility for more specific properties to be defined, values of this property could be migrated to those specific properties and the original property could be deleted afterwards. We could call it 'LilyPond musical notation', to make it clear that it's not Abc or MusicXML or something else to someone who might assume so for just 'musical notation'. If the 400-character limit for strings is still in place for this property, then I think multi-line values may not be necessary. (My initial thoughts on the datatype have this limit in mind.) Otherwise, if the limit can be increased to something larger, then it may be useful to have multi-line values. TASK DESCRIPTIONA recent tweet (http://archive.is/dzr2v) had to be taken down because [an image of] the query result attached to the tweet displayed certain political borders unacceptable to the majority of the tweet's audience, these borders being derived from the default Wikimedia tile layer. There is at least one OSM/Mapbox-based service (https://openstreetmap.in/) whose layers depict boundaries acceptable to the tweet's audience, and being able to readily use these layers with the SPARQL output would immediately rectify the problem with the tweet. It thus would be helpful if an alternate map layer could be specified, perhaps in the #defaultView:Map line of a query, when outputting the results of a query in the Wikidata Query Service in map form.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T215073EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Mahir256Cc: Aklapper, Titodutta, Mahir256, Nandana, MSantos, Lahi, Gq86, Looniverse, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, Orienteerix, merbst, LawExplorer, Ddproxy, _jensen, JGirault, Jonas, phabyogi, Xmlizer, GAllegre, Susannaanas, ferdbold, lxbarth, jkroll, Planemad, Smalyshev, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Tobias1984, Manybubbles, Yurik, Mbch331, Jay8g___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

While the CLDR indicates that the language exclusively uses the Eastern Nagari script, a contributor to Wikimedia projects (User:Awangba Mangang) has been providing localization exclusively in the Meetei Mayek script. Ethnologue does state that the Chakma script is 'no longer in use' to write ccp, and in fact another contributor to Wikimedia projects may decide to exclusively use the Eastern Nagari script to write Chakma. (A similar situation will exist if someone later decides to add things in Sylheti--requiring syl-beng and syl-sylo codes--and Rohingya--requiring rhg-latn, rhg-arab, and rhg-rohg codes.)TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T210311EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Mahir256Cc: Liuxinyu970226, GerardM, Mahir256, Aklapper, Sascha, Nandana, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, _jensen, D3r1ck01, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs
