[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Updated] T141602: [Story] Provide a SPARQL query service for structured data on Commons
Nicolas_Raoul added a comment. Here is my use case, just to illustrate the usefulness of having a SPARQL endpoint. I want to find all Wikidata items that: - Are used as a "depicts" value by at least one Wikimedia Commons file. - Do NOT have a P18 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P18> (image) property yet. The query would list each Wikidata item, and coalesce the URLs of each file. //That would allow me to manually add relevant P18 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P18> values to each of these items, the end goal being to make this depiction selection screen <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikidata_item_choice_thumbnails.svg> more user-friendly.// TASK DETAIL https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T141602 EMAIL PREFERENCES https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/ To: Nicolas_Raoul Cc: Nicolas_Raoul, Mmarx, Multichill, Nemo_bis, Husky, jleedev, Silverfish, Ainali, VIGNERON, JeanFred, Abbe98, ChristianFerrer, Jheald, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, Salgo60, MB-one, Tpt, Addshore, Jarekt, Ramsey-WMF, Tgr, Bugreporter, Lydia_Pintscher, Aklapper, Steinsplitter, Poyekhali, Smalyshev, darthmon_wmde, DannyS712, Nandana, JKSTNK, Lahi, PDrouin-WMF, Gq86, E1presidente, Cparle, Anooprao, SandraF_WMF, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, Tramullas, Acer, merbst, LawExplorer, _jensen, rosalieper, Morgankevinj, Taiwania_Justo, Jonas, Xmlizer, Susannaanas, Ixocactus, Wong128hk, Jane023, jkroll, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, Base, matthiasmullie, aude, Tobias1984, El_Grafo, Dinoguy1000, Manybubbles, Ricordisamoa, Wesalius, Fabrice_Florin, Raymond, Mbch331, Keegan ___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T204045: Support GeoSPARQL in Wikidata Query Service
Nicolas_Raoul added a comment. Let's say I want to find all battlefields of history, and I am only interested in those in Russia (Q159). If I query with P17:Q159 I will get almost none, because most are, rightly, in Soviet Russia (Q18166397) and in the various previous empires of the area, some of whom are bigger than my area of study. Battlefields in Russia is only an example, but this is a rather common need. GeoSPARQL might be a way to enable such queries, if country/region polygons are available and efficiently usable. Thank you for your consideration! :-) TASK DETAIL https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T204045 EMAIL PREFERENCES https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/ To: Nicolas_Raoul Cc: Nicolas_Raoul, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, Aklapper, Nandana, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, merbst, LawExplorer, _jensen, rosalieper, Jonas, Xmlizer, jkroll, Smalyshev, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Tobias1984, Manybubbles, Mbch331 ___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs
[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T181136: [Epic] Make the Wikimedia Commons Android app ready to work with (multilingual) structured data on Wikimedia Commons
Nicolas_Raoul added a comment. User story: I am looking for pictures of butterflies. I touch the search bar, enter "butterfly", and the app starts showing me Commons pictures of butterflies, starting from the best-quality images that Commons has, and allowing the user to scroll down ad nauseum. Both the current Commons and Structured Commons can fulfill this use case... BUT the hard part is sorting by quality. FastCCI used to provide an easy way to get featured+quality+valued images within a category, but it seems FastCCI is not working anymore, and even when working it was never really able to scale. Structured Commons will hopefully be able to provide these results with a simple SPARQL query, and faster than FastCCI as it is the kind of query Wikibase is good at.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T181136EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Nicolas_RaoulCc: Nicolas_Raoul, josephine_l, PDrouin-WMF, Hasenlaeufer, Abit, Aklapper, SandraF_WMF, Lahi, Gq86, E1presidente, Ramsey-WMF, Cparle, GoranSMilovanovic, Ivana_Isadora, QZanden, Tramullas, Acer, LawExplorer, Jseddon, FloNight, Trizek-WMF, Susannaanas, Aschroet, Jane023, Wikidata-bugs, PKM, Base, matthiasmullie, aude, Ricordisamoa, Lydia_Pintscher, Fabrice_Florin, Raymond, Steinsplitter, Mbch331, Keegan, Elitre, Qgil___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

Nicolas_Raoul added a subscriber: Nicolas_Raoul. Nicolas_Raoul added a comment. If an article is in my watchlist, then any property change that affects how that article is shown, should show up in my watchlist. This includes properties from other items, included using `{{#property:P36|from=Q183}}`. On the opposite, changes to properties that are not used in the article, and changes to labels, should not show up. This is a very important issue. At Wikivoyage we use Wikidata a lot, and in some proof-of-concept places more than half of the information is actually stored on Wikidata. Some editors want to back out from using Wikidata because of this watchlist issue. Nicolas_Raoul added a comment. How about telling the community: 1. The staging site is at http://pagebanner.wmflabs.org/wiki/Testp1 please test it in various cases and report any problem 2. If no problem is found, it will be rolled out on 2015/XX/YY That would set a sense of reality/urgency and a clear schedule letting people some time to do their tests. Nicolas_Raoul added a comment. Very nice! I like the fact that links are copyable via right-click (needed when sharing deep links). The TOC does not appear in preview. While not useful during preview, it is good to have the same appearance during preview if possible. Wikivoyage articles have only few root sections, with short names, so overflowing is not a problem for now (unless on mobile I guess). From the user's point of view, it is not a complex problem, and only the UI makes it complex. If the UI was 1. Select "century" 2. Select the century from a dropdown list, then there would be zero chance for mistake. The dropdown list would need "More..." buttons to go arbitrarily far in the past and future, so implementation sounds a bit complex, though. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T180642: Create wireframes for multilingual captions on UploadWizard
Nicolas_Raoul added a comment. Nice job with the caption field! Captions totally make sense, as it is important to have a sort of multilingual label that described the file and can be edited. It makes the uneditable and untranslatable filename/title field redundant, so I removed it in this wireframe: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Multilingual_Captions_wireframe_caption%2Bdescription,_based_on_v3.png As per the active discussion, I believe that we must get rid of filenames, and use identifiers such as "M84945" instead, because filenames contains human words whose meaning change with time, and sometimes become offensive. See https://www.w3.org/Provider/Style/URI on why words must not be used as URIs, and opaque identifiers must be used instead. Cheers, keep up the great work! [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T181136: [Epic] Make the Wikimedia Commons Android app ready to work with (multilingual) structured data on Wikimedia Commons
Nicolas_Raoul added a comment. User story: While attending the concert, I upload a picture of AKB48 performing at Fuji Rock. Besides uploading and adding a caption and description in my language, I must also add "structure" (what used to be known as "categories", among others). As I am on mobile, searching for all structural elements manually would be too hard. I want the app to suggest me these structural elements. Examples: The picture embeds EXIF latitude/longitude of the concert, so I am suggested "Sanroku" and "Naeba" as the location property. For the "depicting" property, I am suggested "Ski slope" and "concert" (this location is used for skiing during winter and concerts during summer). This is found by retrieving the properties of all nearby pictures, and suggesting the properties (key+value) that are most commonly found one in that area. Structural elements that I have used recently are suggested too. For the "depicting" property, "AKB48" is suggested too, as I have entered it in the caption or description (yes, this means searching structural elements in my language. "AKB48" may be the same in all languages, but my "宇多田ヒカル" becomes "هیکارو اوتادا" for another) The Android app currently does all of this (but not multilingual).TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T181136EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Nicolas_RaoulCc: Nicolas_Raoul, josephine_l, PDrouin-WMF, Hasenlaeufer, Abit, Aklapper, SandraF_WMF, Lahi, Gq86, E1presidente, Ramsey-WMF, Cparle, GoranSMilovanovic, Ivana_Isadora, QZanden, Tramullas, Acer, LawExplorer, Jseddon, FloNight, Trizek-WMF, Susannaanas, Aschroet, Jane023, Wikidata-bugs, PKM, Base, matthiasmullie, aude, Ricordisamoa, Lydia_Pintscher, Fabrice_Florin, Raymond, Steinsplitter, Mbch331, Keegan, Elitre, Qgil___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

Nicolas_Raoul added a comment. User story: I am waiting for my bus, and have 20 minutes to kill. I touch "Nearby places" in the Commons app, and a map opens showing me the notable places around me that lack a Commons picture. I walk to the nearest one, "Sabuli town hall", touch the camera icon, take a picture and confirm. The app: Uploads the picture to Commons, Links it from the Wikidata item (the map shows Wikidata items that lacks a Commons picture, so we know the QID) Adds the category found in the Wikidata item's P373 "Commons category" if it has any (many Wikidata items have a Commons category but lack a P18 image, sometimes because only centuries old images from colonial times are available, or most often because nobody has taken the time to select one). Most of this user story's features have already enjoyed long-time popularity from the the app's users, with just the last two bullets being in development right now.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T181136EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Nicolas_RaoulCc: Nicolas_Raoul, josephine_l, PDrouin-WMF, Hasenlaeufer, Abit, Aklapper, SandraF_WMF, Lahi, Gq86, E1presidente, Ramsey-WMF, Cparle, GoranSMilovanovic, Ivana_Isadora, QZanden, Tramullas, Acer, LawExplorer, Jseddon, FloNight, Trizek-WMF, Susannaanas, Aschroet, Jane023, Wikidata-bugs, PKM, Base, matthiasmullie, aude, Ricordisamoa, Lydia_Pintscher, Fabrice_Florin, Raymond, Steinsplitter, Mbch331, Keegan, Elitre, Qgil___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

Nicolas_Raoul added a comment. The concept of TOC is built into MediaWiki (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Table_of_contents) so I guess that including the TOC in the banner via the extension could make sense, rather than doing it manually. By the way, only level 1 section names are shown in the banner TOC, so no TOC for sub-sections, which means deep-linking to a sub-section is difficult for the average user. Wikivoyage has a limited number of sections, all of which have short names. Wikipedia for instance does not have these rules, so we have to think about cases when there are many sections with long names. Not sure you want that too in the extension, but Wikivoyage's banners also have a third component, which is the "badges" you can see at the upper-right of this article for instance: https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Bali There are various "badges" like: - UNESCO World heritage site - Star article - Previous "destination of the month" TASK DETAIL https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T77925 REPLY HANDLER ACTIONS Reply to comment or attach files, or !close, !claim, !unsubscribe or !assign . Nicolas_Raoul added a comment. @Jdlrobson: The goal of Wikidata banners is to share banners between all Wikivoyage projects. This is the huge benefit that prompted us to use Wikidata for banners. Exceptionally, a project may choose to override a value, but that's rare and does not negate the overall benefits.
