Romaine created this task. Romaine added a project: Wikidata. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION In Wikidata on items, the left column of the description area (where labels, descriptions and aliases are added) shows the language. With my settings for Dutch, most of the languages there are in Dutch, but some are not and shown in English instead. (expand example <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q56427997?uselang=nl> + click All entered languages/Alle ingevoerde talen) Two examples are: - Brazilian Portuguese -> Braziliaans-Portugees - Belarusian (Taraškievica orthography) -> Wit-Russisch (Tarasjkevitsa orthografie) Where can I change this? [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T144687: Change $wgArticleCountMethod in Wikidata from default ('link') to 'any'
Romaine added a comment. In T144687#2643669, @Lydia_Pintscher wrote: I think the question hinges on is an item without a statement useful or not. Right now we have 2.75 Million of them of 23.8 Million items in total. That is quite a lot and we definitely need to get this number down. At the same time the number on the main page is incorrect and several times I had to correct people about it and had people complain to me about it. So: Let's change it. Redirects should still not be counted but items without statements should be counted. On many Wikipedia's we periodically have to update the number of items manually in the system, as it is a calculation and not an article/item count. Maybe it does not fit here, but I would like to know also how many statements are added to Wikidata.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T144687EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Urbanecm, RomaineCc: Romaine, Stashbot, Lea_Lacroix_WMDE, Esc3300, YMS, Lydia_Pintscher, hoo, Liuxinyu970226, gerritbot, Matanya, JEumerus, Pasleim, Aklapper, abian, TerraCodes, Urbanecm, D3r1ck01, MuhammadShuaib, Tulsi_Bhagat, Izno, Luke081515, biplabanand, Wikidata-bugs, Snowolf, aude, Mbch331, Jay8g, Krenair___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

Romaine added a comment. With that nlwiki would have a basic sidebar for > without JavaScript readers and you would be able to avoid the need of having > a div hidden somewhere to fill this sidebar in cases where Wikidata contains > already all the information needed (which is I think the most common case). Testing the feature I notice it only uses the sitelinks section of items. And then only those sitelinks that are in the language of the wiki. So statements are not taken into account. So I think I have to disagree with you on the suggestion that in most cases Wikidata would contain all the information needed, that is simple not true. The simple reason for that is that sitelinks can only be added to one item, and a Commons category is added in preference to an item that contains categories of Wikipedia. Meaning that Commons galleries are connected to article items. So most articles items do have a Commons category statement, but do not have a Commons category sitelink. Thousands of Commons categories are not added as sitelink to Wikidata, because of a major issue in de design of Wikidata that does not take the actual Commons situation into account. On nl-wiki we give a preference to linking to Commons categories as those form the basic navigational system, and not to Commons galleries that are often considered not useful. If we set the Wikibase as a basic, this will override the links we have set ourselves. I am not sure if that would en considered acceptable. I will organise a voting to see what the community has as preference. Romaine added a subscriber: Romaine. Romaine added a comment. On nl-wiki we have for years an alternative larger system that already shows the interwiki links to sister projects in the sidebar. Enabling this for everyone on nl-wiki is useless and in almost all the cases duplicate to the already existing ones (already shown to everyone), which is much more extensive than the current Beta system. If you have enabled the Beta system, it is shown duplicate. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T117070: Have pop-up (etc) after creation of article/category in what is asked to connect to existing article or new creation
Romaine created this task. Romaine added a subscriber: Romaine. Romaine added a project: Wikidata. Herald added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION It is time for the next step in Wikipedia-Wikidata: after creating an article or category being asked in a pop-up or new screen (etc) if already an article about this subject exists in another Wikipedia, if yes: way to connect it to that article, if no: let user add it to Wikidata + help to add some basic properties (instance of, if human: gender + birth/death dates (etc), if taxon: scientific name (etc), etc). Too many times users forget to add articles to Wikidata, even while there is an existing item for it. This results on large workloads for other users in checking if subjects already exists, missing properties, etc, while a simple pop-up would help to remind the creator and makes it easier to do this. Having articles and categories added to Wikidata is a convention, a basic guideline that applies to all articles and categories for many years (earlier as requirement to add interwikis at the bottom of the article). Note that the cardinal directions (the directions in a compass) are something different than the labels of coordinates. The English N, E, S and W used in coordinates are derived from Northern Hemisphere, Eastern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, and Western Hemisphere. For most languages this results in the same abbreviation as the ones for North, East, South and West. However for example for Dutch it is different. Like "on 30 degrees north" would be translated as "op 30 graden noorderbreedte" (literally "on 30 degrees northern latitude"), short version: 30° NB.
