It produces incomplete merges and leaves semi-empty useless items behind, which actually are not so easy to find. AFAIK, currently @Pasleim's bot watches the recently performed merges and finishes incomplete merge actions. But this is not a solution for this problem. The function responsible for merging must be improved to perform complete merges: after the merge action, the source item must be checked and if it's not redirect, then do clear it and redirect to the target item. XXN added a comment. The core problem is the fact that Wikidata is poorly organized as a community and project. Per overall a big part of the work done is inefficient and counterproductive. At least the descriptioning part could and should be optimized. There are many users who acts just like bots, and using mass-editing tools on their own they add just by one description in a single language to series of items consisting of tens of thousands of items. For last month there are 4 human users who together made 3 Millions of edits by adding just descriptions in their native languages (one user in 10 days made over 900,000 edits to add descriptions). I can show you some large series of items where each item has over 50 consecutive edits made by one user in a short time span just to add descriptions in several languages. My error case can be reproduced with ease. I've created for testing purposes two items in test.wikidata:

Descriptions are equal, labels are different.
My edit in fact is overwriting both label and description of an item simultaneously, creating a situation where the descriptions are different and labels are equal, but unsuccessfully without a valid reason - the edit is not accepted.
You can try this small script to edit one of these items in the same way I did, and you will see what will happen (I get the same error like on the the production site):

I've disabled all custom user scripts (local and global) in order to find the cause, but nothing helped. Cleared cache, deleted cookies; no success. Tested logged out, and they works as expected. Then I tested with another accounts and it also works. Seems to be something related to (or caused by) my user account, as I've done tests in multiple browsers, and the result is the same in all of them. I'll attach to this post a capture of the page source of a random item "affected" by this issue - there is missing any link tag under the Commons page name value. In any case, anything merged from `mo` to `ro` needs verification by native Romanian speakers. Are we forced to change these lang. codes right now? I ask because the current proposal for deletion of Moldovan Wikipedia can help us a lot to decide what to do. The normal and expected result of that proposal for deletion is deletion of all `mo` Wikimedia projects and then Wikidata lang code `mo` with all his values can be deleted all at once. There is a //little// problem with moving `mo` terms to `ro-cyrl`: Romanian Cyrillic alphabet was used before 1862 and it is *not the same* as the Moldovan Cyrillic alphabet used between 1924-1989. It's not recommended to do this move. By me, the best way is to wait a decision on proposal for deletion of Moldovan projects. Anyway, until that moment there exists several wikimedia projects with `mo` subdomain lang code and a synchronization between sitelinks code and label-description-alias code is necessary. XXN added a comment. @Ricordisamoa, sometimes I browse pages in 2-3 Wikipedias (in different linguistic versions) simultaneously, trying to find pairs of pages to connect them in WD, and then copying URL of WD items and pasting them in another Item to merge looks most secure action preventing you to do accidentally unwanted merge.
