[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T278962: Allow redirects and the target article as independent sitelinks if redirect badge is used

2022-05-17 Thread deryckchan
deryckchan added a comment.

I agree with ChristianKl rather than Taylor here.

Allowing / disallowing sitelinks to redirects is a Wikidata problem, not a
Wikipedia problem. Therefore, I think it is preferable to store the
necessary information in Wikidata rather than in Wikipedia.

I curate redirects on two Wikipedias (en, yue) and also edit Wikidata
regularly, and I really dislike the current workflow which requires me to
edit a Wikipedia redirect page just so that I can add a Wikidata sitelink
to it. I would much prefer the permanent solution to store the "intentional
redirect" flag on Wikidata rather than Wikipedia.

In T213941#4885091, @Lea_Lacroix_WMDE wrote:
Hello @deryckchan, and thanks for creating this task!
We're actually considering this for the year to come, but before starting developping anything, we need to understand better what people would like to do with the data, how they would like to display it on their wiki, what kind of Lua functions they would need.
If you already have some ideas, or use cases, feel free to share :)

As I wrote on T213941

I would envisage this being done using parser functions, similar to {{#property:}} for Q-items.

As the first step, we should make {{#statements:}} and {{#property:}} work for Lexemes too. For example, we should make these work:

{{#statements:P5974|from=Q4115189}} (i.e. domain:item; datatype:Lexeme/Sense/Form) currently outputs the Lexeme-Sense ID "L123-S2". It should output the lemma or gloss
{{#statements:P5974|from=L123-S2}} (i.e. domain:Lexeme/Sense/Form; datatype:anything) throws parser error at the moment

This will address migration blocks like https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Properties_for_deletion#Property:P2521, where the lack of a feature to call Lexemes in Wikipedias is blocking the migration of a property.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T212843EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: deryckchanCc: Addshore, Jdforrester-WMF, deryckchan, Lydia_Pintscher, Lea_Lacroix_WMDE, Nandana, Mringgaard, Lahi, Gq86, Cinemantique, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, _jensen, jberkel, Psychoslave, Wikidata-bugs, aude, GPHemsley, Shizhao, Nemo_bis, Darkdadaah, Mbch331, Ltrlg, Krenair___

2019-01-16 Thread deryckchan
deryckchan added a comment.
Actually there is already a separator: a spacebar.

In the ideal situation, the separator should be localizable. For example Chinese and Japanese might prefer 、(or · ) rather than a Latin comma. But this is a very technical usage (i.e. not dictated by natural language grammar) so I can't speak for the preferences of other users.

In the short term, both comma and spacebar would be fine. I think speakers of non-Latin languages can cope with a Latin comma as separator, much like we have put up permanently with the utterly foreign and non-localizable Latin colon for namespaces.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T201808EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: deryckchanCc: deryckchan, Amire80, Jan_Dittrich, WMDE-leszek, Aklapper, VIGNERON, Bugreporter, Lea_Lacroix_WMDE, Lydia_Pintscher, Lexicographical data, KaMan, Nandana, Mringgaard, A.S.Kochergin, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, _jensen, JGirault, D3r1ck01, Jonas, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Darkdadaah, Mbch331___

No change since August 2017. Date format displays in some languages (e.g. Hungarian and Cantonese above) have changed but are still wrong. CHANGES TO TASK DESCRIPTIONThe mobile app and mobile web Wikipedia interfaces automatically pulls item descriptions from Wikidata, where an item description in the same language exists; the mobile app also allows editing of the Wikidata item description.

But when browsingtrying to **edit** the Cantonese Wikipediae item descriptions using eitherthe mobile interfacesapp, the correct label cannot be extracted from Wikidata because the domain name (zh-yue.*) doesn't match the language code (yue)an error occurs and the edit cannot be saved. (The domain name vs ISO 639 discrepancy is discussed on T10217.) When trying to **edit** the Cantonese item descriptions using the mobile app,The error message seems to suggest the problem has to do with the fact that the domain name (zh-yue.*) doesn't match the language code (yue). an error occurs because the app tries to find a non-existent language "zh-yue"(The domain name vs ISO 639 discrepancy is discussed on Wikidata.T10217.)

Until T10217 gets fixed (it has already taken 9 years and is still open), please resolve this mismatch by letting zh-yue.wikipedia entries match up with the yue language descriptions on Wikidata for both reading and editing.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T193360EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: deryckchanCc: Jdlrobson, Liuxinyu970226, Aklapper, deryckchan, Lahi, Gq86, Sharvaniharan, mojoaxel, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, Winter, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Dbrant, Mbch331___

2017-06-08 Thread deryckchan
deryckchan updated the task description. (Show Details)Herald added a subscriber: revi.
CHANGES TO TASK DESCRIPTIONIn Portuguese per
Since Wikidata's early days it had been possible to use Wikidata's interface in languages other than English. However, dates have so far been half-localized by substituting the month name with the month name in the target language without localizing the date format string.

This results in major inconvenience to users of languages where the date format string is not "d Mmm " or "Mmm d ". In many cases the partially localized dates make no sense to a native reader.

This task requests that language-specific format strings to be applied when Wikidata displays any date. Until that is implemented, incomplete localizations should be reverted to an international date format (e.g. 2012-10-29) for languages that do not use a "d Mmm " format string,

For example, per [[https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?diff=112407453&oldid=112404791#Date_formatting
I would like to format the date|this thread]], the Portuguese interface displays "junho 12 1990" on
for [[https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q159?uselang=pt-br
as|this item]] which is wrong Portuguese; the correct date format should be "12 de junho de 1990".

--In other languages, such as Chinese (all variants), Japanese, and Korean where month names are simply numbers, such a localisation results in a mangled string of numbers which make little sense to the reader, for example "22 五月 2017" which does not make sense to a Chinese reader; the correct format string should be "2017年5月22日".

12 of the 423 languages and language-variants MediaWiki currently supports name their default date format "ymd". These languages are namely crh (including variants), hu, kaa, and kk (including variants). We could disable the localization for these languages and display raw ISO dates instead. Users will not get better localization by doing so. But the order will be the same as the users expect. We might assume users being used to any kind of "ymd" ordering are less confused by "2017-11-10", even if it will be entirely unlocalized until we support full localization.
About 20 more languages specify default date formats that start with the year, but are not named "ymd". Most notably gan, ko, and zh, including all their variants. We might add these to a blacklist and display raw ISO dates as well.
We might add other languages to the same blacklist if requested and ISO is proven to be less confusing for native speakers.

The reason is that, I'm afraid, it is not correct to assume that "everybody can distinguish day, month and year in [dd Mmm ]". As Samat and I have strongly argued in this thread, translated month names + wrong date formatting string is not comprehensible in many languages. I must argue that it is actually more confusing to show partially localised "dd Mmm ". Most users of the internet understand -mm-dd regardless of mother language and Wikidata users in particular are used to language fallback chains.

@thiemowmde : Imagine your software displays "2017Jahr5Monat22Tag" (which is the Chinese format string with German words substituted in). This is how non-"dd Mmm " users currently feel when we use Wikidata. It's worse than defaulting to "2017-05-22" "May 22 2017".

To clarify, this ticket is about displaying and outputting dates in the language-appropriate format.

At the moment Wikidata's web interface and {{#Property:}} returns "dd mmm " with mmm substituted for the name of the month in the desired language, which as earlier discussion has shown is not useful at all to languages that don't use "dd mmm ".
