It bears mentioning that monobook and its various tweaks took maybe a week
to deal with, and it took maybe another three days for people to agree to
make the upgrade and then implement it.

Now, apparently we are conducting "usability studies" that may or may not be
related to actually getting some CSS written.

I use it relatively frequently these days, like once a week maybe.
When I'm bored, and nothing in my contribs list or stubs that I've
created needs any attention, I'll check out the list of tasks. I find
merging strangely satisfying, and usefully time consuming (eg 10-15
mins per merge).

Boy the Wikipedia GUI could be a lot better, but small tweaks aren't
going to do much. I assume the various studies about its usability are
intended to drive some new GUI effort.

I see that too on new page patrol. I'll, through twinkle, put a
"you're article might be speedily deleted" temp on somebody's talk
page, and it'll be the first thing that they get on their talk page.

I always thought this page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Introduction

...which leads people into this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tutorial

...was and is an excellent introduction.

However, many (most?) people don't read the manual.

Well, we could, as is done in online games, create a little school for
people to go through and learn the ropes before we let them into the
"game" itself. Not sure how we would set that up, certainly very
paternalistic, but constantly processing unblock requests, as I do, I can
see that much of the trouble people get into is due to a lack of basic

I don't use it much either and I didn't in the beginning. It's not

once or twice when I'm browsing, nothing more than that really unless

We may have a skin or two that could be improved in this regard. If you
find a problem you will need to communicate with the developers. They
have a mailing list wikitec...@lists.wikimedia.org

The Community Portal is semi-protected, so its not that vulnerable to
vandalism. On the skin I'm using it is in the sidebar on every page under

Is there any way to better advertise the community portal, so those

(Because we've gotten our hellos out of the way, I've retitled the thread)

It generally "goes" nowhere here unless you seed it with a question or idea.
If your stated interest can be translated into a question, it might go
something like:
What socially-oriented ideas might make Wikipedia better?

Though you may not yet understand the intricacies, it still would not be out
of place for you to suggest some ideas yourself. Especially when you want to
start a new conversation. In threads like this, we can deal with a few
different things at once, and who knows what might come up?

I myself am wondering if anyone has seen any userboxes made into
bumperstickers.
