The code is just about 200-250 lines in Python, so it might not be as
usable as our official WLM application. I am, however, not able to
test it because my smartphone uses an old Android 2.1 :-(

They are not using any of our APIs at the moment; the data they use is
based on a recent Wikipedia dump, as I have been told, and has not
been updated since (as is the case with our database).

Hi,

the stories I heard so far outside this list are rather negative though -
at least for the iPhone. Apparently the GPS doesn't work well outside the
US and the way they upload their pictures is still a bit shaky. Also the
source code doesn't see open source?

At the same time, it is interesting to see what an open API can do :)

This and the competition name visible on top of the page has been
changed after I got in touch with the Tasty Labs team, who are /very/
helpful and acting in good faith.

We are now sorting out the behind-the-scenes technical details, and
I'll let you know as soon as there is more update on this.

Right now, the page says: "By submitting a photograph to this project,
you (i) affirm that the photograph is your original work and you have
all sufficient right to grant the following license and (ii) hereby
license the photograph under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0

Hi Arthur,
thanks for the information, it's greatly appreciated!

I have just written to Tasty Labs, asking them about their wrong use
of the name ("Wikipedia Loves Monuments"), the lack of attribution and
any mention of the CC-BY-SA 3.0 licence, and their plans of moving the
pictures to Commons.

It looks to me that their intention is good (helping Wikipedia), but
they missed some points that we, Wikimedians, tend to give more
importance than the Average Joe (or Joe Bloggs if you prefer British
English).

I should get back to you with more information as soon as I receive a
reply from Tasty Labs; please stay tuned!

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] WLM and Human.io

2012-09-25 Thread Arthur Richards
I downloaded the app for android - it is very limited (particularly
compared to our WLM app), but when you select a monument to photograph it
asks you to confirm that the photo be licensed appropriately - at least
monuments near me are prompting for CC-BY-SA license. I presume [perhaps
incorrectly] that they're pulling the correct license information for the
campaigns, but I cannot be sure. However, the license does not appear to be
appropriately honored on their site and it is unclear how the photos get to
commons (or even if they do at all).

It would probably be wise to follow up with human.io to get these questions
answered publicly so users are not in danger of being misled.

I doubt it, looks like it's not that much of a good idea after all. It
seems to me that the pictures are currently being uploaded to their
server, and the pictures are copyrighted by Tasty Labs, Inc. Not to
mention that they are using the Wikipedia trademark, and I very much
doubt that they have contacted the Wikimedia Foundation about it.

I'll be contacting Tasty Labs with all those questions in a minute.
