It is difficult to draw conclusions about user behavior. The more
difficult it is to say something about the behavior of persons, which
are not yet detectable part of the community.

Because it's probably the most difficulty to make predictions about
facts that take place in the future.

Well, sv.wiki has just volunteered to be your guinea pig as the first
botpedia after Volapuk. :) I think it will be possible to make at least
some simple stats like how many new editors we got with first edit on
one of these articles, what's their retention etc.
If the experiment fails, we may see mass-deletion of a million bot
articles in a few years: it wouldn't be the first time, deleting is very
easy.

I am happy to see that you, as well as Hubertl, is happy to go on as you
always have done. I do not have the ambition to change your view on
life, but to reach out to others open to the new opportunities that
automation gives us in better reahing our aim free knowledge for all

The base fact figures for sv:wp is
Increase of views +23% on yearly basis, WM:DE +3, WMF:Fr +8 (all mature
wikipediauser communities), nl with +14 and wm:it with +16 also very
good figures (Spain Russia, and Portugal still in a built up phase have
higher numbers)
http://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/TablesPageViewsMonthlyCombined.htm

Editor 1 and 5 somewhat up or stable, new editor up in Jan, Feb,
March, but down in April (eastertime)
http://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/TablesWikipediaSV.htm

For my statement though I base it on that I 24/7 monitor ALL edits
(there is around 50 in 15 min, 500 on 2,5 h, longer during night). And I
have observed the effect of introducing our lakearticles (these are
made up from three sources containing more then 100 different items of
data, see for example
http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lista_%C3%B6ver_insj%C3%B6ar_i_Ljungby_kommun
where you can pick any or from the googlemap can find any from its
place). And here I find after these are created a flur of new edits in
old articles (as well as these) many from earlier more passive
contributers users, and even some new. And there are photo safaris now
being discussed to take photos of some of all these lakes (we find that
to work with articles close to your home seems to be very simulating)

My concern is that bot articles usually stay the same and don't grow much.
They give a bad impression about a Wikipedia language version, and there is

No offense intended from my part.

Your idea of the extended use of Wikidata is also discussed in

Right now we are getting accostumed to the new way of interwiki

Instead of just discussing this topic as always has been done, it would be
great to take advantage of the opportunity to monitor changes in the sv-wp
community as a result of this massive automated article creation.

For me it would be interesting to know:
1) current perception in the community about automated articles correlated
with the number of contributions by the person answering.
2) impact of the newly created articles: views, human edits done to those
articles (specially nr of bytes added), correlation with nr of previous
edits
3) changes in the community after 1 year, survey of new members, of those,
how many registered after seeing a bot article vs how many after seeing a
human-created article?
4) some metrics about the article quality (maybe with AFT)

Otherwise the same arguments are going to be repeated over and over again,
year after year, without ever reaching a conclusion, or without ever
learning which impact those articles might have.

My project does not aim to be an expansive database like Wikidata. The goal
of my project is create the *periodic table* for economics readable to
laypersons. To my knowledge, no other economist has attempted to make a
'periodic table' for economics.

I demand that my project gets global attention. I cannot emphasize how
important this is. The current political leadership has shown incapable of
addressing our current problems (environmental destruction world hunger,
etc.). Change is needed. A new economic perspective is needed. I feel
morally responsible to stand on top of a mountain and yell for attention.
My intentions are altruistic. People are dying of starvation everyday and
I will not shut up until they have food.

Quite the contrary, I think you're very knowledgeable about the
subject—but what does AffCom have to do with it? If you're going to talk
about Wikipedia's role in disseminating information about diplomacy issues,
then I think it should be simply 'Bence Damokos, Wikipedian'.

 (No offence intended, etc.)

None taken and thanks for the suggestion. In this case, I believe the best
solution would have been to mention that I am the chair of AffCom, to make
it clear that this is a position I hold (like the director level officials
who will be the other participants) and not my qualification.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikipedia Zero in Google search result

2013-06-18 Thread Adam Baso
Update:

We've added an enhancement to Wikipedia Zero so that if a user who isn't on
a participating carrier network navigates to a Wikipedia Zero page on
language.zero.wikipedia.org, such as
http://en.zero.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muse_%28band%29 , the user will be
presented an option to visit the canonical URL of the article. If clicked,
the canonical URL should get the user to the mobile or desktop version of
the page, based on device type.

We're hoping that by next week the Google index will be refreshed so as to
correctly mark the language.zero.wikipedia.org pages as duplicate pages
in the omitted section. Upon confirmation of as much, the current plan is
to introduce https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/69420/ to prevent indexing
of language.zero.wikipedia.org altogether.

On Tue, May 28, 2013 at 6:26 PM, Adam Baso ab...@wikimedia.org wrote:

 All,

My mistake. The pages in Google's index that I used for sampling - the
ones that have Sorry, ... in their description in Google search results -
are cached pages. I assumed incorrectly that those pages were based on
recent indexing (e.g., in the past few days).

I think we can actually stick to the original plan of Google re-indexing
and the search results de-emphasizing the language.zero.wikipedia.orglinks
 within the next 30 days.

I still find it strange that there are language.zero.wikipedia.orglinks
that turned up higher in the search engine rankings than their
 better-established language.wikipedia.org counterparts. But I suppose
with fewer competing page elements, especially on long-tail articles with
fewer or no direct links to the desktop page, this is maybe not totally
 unexpected.

resolve the issue naturally as Google re-indexed. But it appears Google has
re-indexed and yet the .zero.wikipedia.org URLs are still present in
Google's index, instead of the language.wikipedia.org URLs.

I have thus resubmitted patch 64629https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/64629 for

[Wikimedia-l] 'Periodic Table of Economics': Mapping the Global Economy

2013-06-18 Thread Alex Peek
Project Home page: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_Economic_Map

The goal of my project is create the *periodic table* for economics
readable to laypersons. To my knowledge, no other economist has attempted
to make a 'periodic table' for economics. I am using Wikipedia as a
platform for this project to gain recognition.

I demand that my project gets global attention. I cannot emphasize how
important this is. The current political leadership has shown incapable of
addressing our current problems. Change is needed. A new economic
perspective is needed. This project will enable the voting public to
clearly see the injustices of today's world economy.

I feel morally responsible to stand on top of a mountain and yell for
attention. My intentions are altruistic. People are dying of starvation
everyday and I will not shut up until they have food. We must build schools
in developing countries with taxpayer money in rich countries. We have the
power to fix a lot of the world's problems if we only allocated our
resources properly.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikipedia in jail!

2013-06-18 Thread Robert Rohde
Very cool.

I'm curious, did the prison have any concerns about content or want
things filtered out?

I've know that some prisons don't allow reading material that is
sexual, violent, etc. Did restrictions like that have to be
considered? Obviously, most of Wikipedia is pretty mundane, but if
you look hard enough I'm sure some people might find things to object
to.

Wikipedia for prisoners – an unexpected partnership between a swiss prison
 and Wikimedia CH

Following an initiative from Emmanuel Engelhart, with the support of
Wikimedia CH CAO, Chantal Ebongué, since March 2013, prisoners who request
can have an access to Wikipedia offline (Kiwix project). The idea is to
stimulate or to support the interest for education of prisoners who were, for
a large majority, condemned to long-time sentences.

After three months of pilot phasis, the project is successful : Among the 36
prisoners of the Bellevue’s prison in Gorgier, 18 possess or rent a computer.
All of them requested the upload of Wikipedia offline on their PC. For
security reasons, swiss prisoners have a very restricted access to internet.

More informations in the press releases (ENG, DE, FR, IT) that was sent today
 to the swiss media

Re: [Wikimedia-l] 'Periodic Table of Economics': Mapping the Global Economy

2013-06-18 Thread Alex Peek
I want to clarify that I am not a professional economist. I am a financial
economics major at Western Washington University.

These 'Economy of X' are designed for laypersons to see the economic
reality of the world. I believe if the public were more informed on
economics, we would better chance solving world hunger. Once this project
is finished, one will clearly see that there are resources available to
solve most of societies problems. I believe that my project provides a very
strong argument for humanitarian organizations in the world.

This project is a fundamentally missing piece of the economic conversation.

Hi Alex, just curious - since you refer to yourself as an economist,
what institution(s) are you affiliated with?

And can you explain how writing Economy of X articles, no matter how
detailed, will solve the problem of uneven resource distribution
 around the world?

The goal of my project is create the *periodic table* for economics
readable to laypersons. To my knowledge, no other economist has attempted
to make a 'periodic table' for economics. I am using Wikipedia as a
platform for this project to gain recognition.

I demand that my project gets global attention. I cannot emphasize how
important this is. The current political leadership has shown incapable
 of
addressing our current problems.

We must build
 schools
in developing countries with taxpayer money in rich countries. We have
 the
power to fix a lot of the world's problems if we only allocated our
  resources properly.
