Re: [Wikimedia-l] Early Update - Fundraising

2016-12-08 Thread Info WorldUniversity
Dear Katherine and Wikimedians,

I'm not sure if this email will go through to this list or not, since I've
gotten some bounce backs, but I'm writing to let you know of a last minute
grant writing workshop in SF at Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's
office tomorrow at 11 am. I just emailed the following to the SF Quaker
Meeting (on 9th Street) list about this opportunity. (And World University
and School, of which I'm the founder, president and presiding clerk,
donated CC WUaS to CC Wikidata last October 2015).

Dear Friends,

Do you know anyone in SF Friends' Meeting who might be interested, at this
last minute, in a grant-writing workshop in Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's
office tomorrow morning at 11am? The workshop still has spaces available.
I'm seeking to write grants via Nancy's office for Friendly-informed World
University and School. (I'm heading to the Federal Building on 7th Street
from the SF Friends' Meeting House with Quakers for a 10am meeting there -
to join in a Quaker conversation beforehand. For this 10 am Quaker
gathering, Friends are gathering at 9 am at SF FM, probably partly to get
into the Federal Building early to deal with their "Airport Security" per
Jocelyn Yow's email below, and possibly for Meeting as well. I'm leaving my
little Swiss Army pocket knife at home right now). If interested, you would
need to RSVP with Jocelyn Yow for this at jocelyn@mail.house.gov soon.

Friendly greetings, Scott

Greetings,

Thank you for your RSVP for tomorrow’s grants workshop at 11a.m. at 90 7th
Street, San Francisco, California 94103 .

As a reminder, all visitors must present government-issued photo
identification, such as a valid state driver license, ID card or passport,
to gain access to the Federal Building. Entering the building is much like
airport security, and will require extra time. Arriving early is highly
recommended to allow for security procedures. The San Francisco Federal
Building is located one block south of the Civic Center/UN Plaza Muni and
BART Station http://www.bart.gov/stations/civc. The closest parking garage
is the SOMA Grand, 1160 Mission Street, at $2 an hour
http://www.yelp.com/biz/soma-grand-garage-san-francisco.

We still have spaces available. If you know anyone else who is interested
in attending, feel free to bring them along to the workshop.

Thanks,

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Early Update - Fundraising

2016-12-08 Thread Joseph Seddon
There is naturally some flexibility as to when we stop and that's a
decision that will be looked at over the coming days and weeks. It's always
useful to give ourselves some breathing space for our Q3 and Q4 campaigns.
We also don't include major gifts donations in the total for our online
campaigns. This is one factor that increases the difference between the
December totals and the December goal for online fundraising. Last year we
also decided to use the online fundraiser to help seed the endowment which
added $5million to our to our fundraising for the December fundraiser.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Early Update - Fundraising

2016-12-08 Thread Joseph Seddon
It's mostly the fact that it's a low priority dump, isn't maintained
actively, some of the queries used to produce it are old and probably need
updating and some of them are definitely broken (the refund sheet certainly
is). It includes some major gifts donations (which we don't include in our
campaign target for online fundraising), but almost certainly not others.
So all in all it just needs an overhaul (the YTD sheet only includes
$59,000,000 for the last calendar year which is some $18,000,000 short.

Something to look into.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Seddon's Fundraising Question of the Day: Wikipedia in a media world

2016-12-08 Thread Joseph Seddon
Lodewijk asked a similar question on the Wikipedia Weekly Facebook group
who have also been recipients of these. There is no plan to do an analysis
published or not since the mini surveys have been mostly about generating
ideas for copy and the privacy policies for the survey were worded as such.
But following on from feedback I may look at producing lightweight
summaries about the themes that come up for each one but they are meant to
be fairly lightweight and narrow in their focus and purpose.

James,
it is difficult to assess the effectiveness of any of these approaches
until they have been trialed in some form. But as we work on specific
components, we will be researching both current trends and numbers, and
figuring out how to measure the effectiveness of future work.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Statement by Wikimedia Board on Healthy Community Culture, Inclusivity, and Safe Spaces

2016-12-08 Thread Patrick Earley
I want to thank the Board for this letter, and for their focus on this
problem.

What specific work should we be doing to make progress around this issue?
Harassment is a complex problem, and there are no easy solutions. Nor is
there likely to be a single solution; improvement will have to be made
through a number of initiatives and coordinated approaches.

Wikimedia volunteers have offered many different approaches to the problem,
through consultations, workshops, the Inspire campaign, conference
sessions, and discussion. The Support and Safety team has been collating
these ideas, exploring the issue in the broader context of online
communities, and delving into academic research on the topic.

From these conversations and research, we have identified some
categories/areas for improvement:

   - Better blocking tools and detection - the Wikimedia community works
hard on the front lines keeping our users safe from harassment, through
monitoring noticeboards and recent changes for problems, investigating
“sock” accounts used to abuse contributors, and placing blocks on
problematic users. Improvements to blocking tools, and the ability to
detect harassing comments sooner can empower contributors to be more
   effective at these tasks.

   - Reporting and evaluation tools - The current systems for reporting
harassment are overburdened and can be unclear to users, and there are
limited tools that admins and stewards can use to evaluate the cases and
make good decisions. New tools, developed in collaboration with
functionaries and communities, can improve the experience of reporting,
   investigating and managing harassment cases.

   - Training for better handling of both in-person and online harassment -
Better training can give contributors the tools and skills to handle
harassment situations quickly and empathetically, document cases, and
provide good advice to targets of harassment.

   - Policy and enforcement - Wikimedia communities have developed a
variety of processes, policies, and approaches to dealing with behavioural
problems. As a movement, we need to identify which are working well, and
share those successes. We also need to identify where our approaches are
not working well, identify the problems, and try new solutions based on
   research and data.

   - Coordination with other platforms on harassment approaches and tools,
and keeping up with current academic research - Our communities are not the
only ones struggling with the problem of online harassment. We need to
work more closely with other platforms, researchers, online communities,
and experts to make sure we are aware of successful techniques, new
   research, and useful tools.

The above areas are not the only areas where improvement can be made -
right now, contributors are brainstorming other approaches through the
Community Wishlist process.[1] We also encourage contributors to reach out
to the Support and Safety team at c...@wikimedia.org with ideas, or contact
me privately at pear...@wikimedia.org.

Hello Christophe,

Thank you for forwarding the resolution.

What is the WMF actually going to do?

[Wikimedia-l] Statement by Wikimedia Board on Healthy Community Culture, Inclusivity, and Safe Spaces

2016-12-08 Thread Christophe Henner
Hello everyone,

As many of you know, over the past couple of years the Wikimedia Foundation
has taken a focused look at community health—particularly in regards to
harassment. The Foundation's Board has been monitoring and discussing this
issue over the past year with great interest. We have prepared a statement
offering our thoughts on this topic, and providing a clear mandate for the
Foundation’s leadership to fully engage on this issue.

Our statement is below and has been posted on Meta-Wiki, where it is set up
for translation:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Board_noticeboard/November_2016_-_Statement_on_Healthy_Community_Culture,_Inclusivity,_and_Safe_Spaces

Since the Foundation was established, we have been invested in building a
positive community culture. As part of these efforts, we have monitored the
projects for instances of harassment, escalating our capacity to respond in
recent years. Thanks to the work of the Foundation's Support and Safety
Team, we now have data in the form of the 2015 Harassment Survey[1] about
the nature of the issue. This has enabled us to identify key areas of
concern, and step up our response appropriately. This research shows that
harassment has a negative impact on participation in our projects. This has
implications for our ability to collect, share, and disseminate free
knowledge in support of the Wikimedia vision. Our statement speaks to the
Board's duty to help the Foundation fulfill its mission.

The Board is committed to making our communities safer and will not accept
harassment and toxic behavior on Wikimedia projects. We believe this matter
deserves the Foundation's attention and resources, and have confirmed this
responsibility at our latest Board meeting on November 13th. The questions
that lay before us all now are how to best address this threat, rather than
if we should attempt to do so.

The Board especially appreciates and applauds the work being done to
address this important issue by many community leaders across the movement
and teams within the Foundation. We look forward to seeing this cooperative
work not only continue, but expand. Finally, we encourage everyone who is
interested in helping the Foundation address this threat to our vision and
mission to engage in the upcoming discussions around this issue.

On behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees,

Christophe Henner, Board Chair

María Sefidari, Board Vice Chair

Statement by the Wikimedia Board on Healthy Community Culture, Inclusivity,
and Safe Spaces

At our Board meeting on November 13, and in Board meetings in September and
June, we spent considerable time discussing the issues of harassment and
hostility on the internet generally, and more specifically on the Wikimedia
projects.

This is an important issue. Approximately 40% of internet users, and 70% of
women internet users, have personally experienced harassment.[1] Of people
who have reported experiencing harassment on Wikimedia projects, more than
50% reported decreasing their participation in our community.[2] Based on
this and other research, we conclude that harassment and toxic behavior on
the Wikimedia projects negatively impacts the ability of the Wikimedia
projects to collect, share, and disseminate free knowledge. This behavior
is contrary to our vision and mission.

Our communities deserve safe spaces in which they can contribute
productively and debate constructively. It is our belief that the Wikimedia
Foundation should be proactively engaged in eliminating harassment,
promoting inclusivity, ensuring a healthier culture of discourse, and
improving the safety of Wikimedia spaces. We request management to dedicate
appropriate resources to this end.

We urge every member of the Wikimedia communities to collaborate in a way
that models the Wikimedia values of openness and diversity, step forward to
do their part to stop hostile and toxic behavior, support people who have
been targeted by such behavior, and help set clear expectations for all
contributors.

[Wikimedia-l] Voting on 2016 Community Wishlist Survey ends Monday

2016-12-08 Thread Danny Horn
Hi everyone,

There's just a few more days to vote on the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey,
to help determine what WMF's Community Tech team will be working on next
year:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2016_Community_Wishlist_Survey

Everyone is invited to show your support for the features and changes that
you want to see. The top 10 proposals with the most support votes will be
Community Tech's to-do list for the year, and the wishes below the top 10
will be offered to other staff and volunteer developers as highly-valued
projects.

Voting ends on Monday at 23:59 UTC, so please come by and check it out
while there's still time to vote!

[Wikimedia-l] Passing of User:Coyau

2016-12-08 Thread Guillaume Paumier
Dear all,

It is with great sadness that I must share the news of the passing of
User:Coyau, a pillar of the francophone Wikimedia community.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Coyau
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Coyau

He joined our community over a decade ago, and had become an active
editor on several French-language wikis (Wikipedia, Wikisource,
Wiktionary), as well as a prolific contributor to Commons and
Wikidata. He had made over 1.5 million edits across Wikimedia
projects. We learned of his death on Tuesday; he was 38.

He was deeply committed, delightfully absurd, and absolutely genial.
You may have met him if you've ever had drinks with Wikimedians in
Paris. He also had a blog in French where he wrote about Wikimedia
projects and shared tutorials about topics like photo processing for
other Wikimedians to learn:
http://coyau.blogspot.com/

He was a genuine and soulful human being, whose sudden death has left
many of his wiki friends and colleagues heartbroken. His loss is felt
profoundly among the communities, where people have been expressing
their grief and condolences on his talk page:
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discussion_utilisateur:Coyau#Bip_bip_bip...

He had uploaded thousands of files on Commons, among which a photo of
a deflated yellow balloon in a tree (which has become emblematic of
him), and a stitched 360° panorama assembled from 219 photos of a
seemingly random Parisian street:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Quai_de_la_Seine_(Paris),_baudruche.jpg
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Paris,_Rue_Watt.jpg

As an homage, you are invited to browse his photos on Wikimedia
Commons and add them to articles and pages in need of relevant
pictures:

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Deutschland: Abraham Taherivand appointed Interim Executive Director

2016-12-08 Thread Tim Moritz Hector
Dear Wikimedians,

Earlier this week I informed you that Christian Rickerts might become the
Undersecretary of State for the new Berlin ministry of economy, energy and
enterprises. This has been confirmed today and Christian has stepped down
from his WMDE role.

I am very pleased to announce that the WMDE Supervisory Board appointed
Abraham Taherivand as Interim Executive Director as of 8 December 2016.

Abraham has joined WMDE in March 2012 and is the Head of our Software
Development department. He has been on the transition team during the last
ED search, has headed our works council and has been appointed deputy of
the Executive Director recently. In his multiple roles, Abraham’s decisions
have always been made in the sense of the Wikimedia Deutschland as a whole.
With immediate effect, he has the full rights and duties of the Executive
Director and will also continue to lead the Software Development Department.

This solution allows us as a board to approach the next steps with the
necessary calmness and deliberate thought. On 28-29 January 2017, we will
meet for our regular board retreat and discuss all questions regarding the
permanent filling of the ED position.

Christian, once again a big thank you for your work with us.
Congratulations and a good start in politics. I would like to thank you,
Abraham, for your agreement to take on this crucial task and look forward
to the further, close cooperation with you!

I will keep you posted on future updates in the transition process.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Early Update - Fundraising

2016-12-08 Thread WereSpielChequers
Hi Seddon,

I can understand a few anomalies where people give when they don't have
funds to cover it, and for a difference between estimated exchange rates
and the actual exchange rate that applied when the transaction was
processed (currencies float and are quite capable of moving between the
moment you are aware of a donation and the moment it is converted into one
of the currencies you bank in). But I'd expect such anomalies to be a tiny
fraction of a percent. OK one of these days we will have a record breaking
donation day in a currency that then devalues by half before we convert
that money into dollars, but I don't recall any spectacular devaluations in
the last two weeks.

Is it worth checking to see why these numbers in the frdata dump are only a
rough guide?

If its something as innocent as our estimates still working on say 2012
currency conversions and the actual currency conversions are based on the
day rate, then meh. But if one set of figures is gross before credit card
and other transaction costs and the other figures are net, or one set
assumed a UK Gift Aid sign up as high as Wikimedia UK could have got and
the reality was much lower, then I'd be alarmed at such a difference.

Agreed.
What could be done is to allow the fundraiser to continue after reaching the
original goals with acknowledgement that the original goals have been met, and
specifying what extended goals income could be used for. This happens all the
time on kickstarter. It is open and ethically acceptable as everyone knows what
is happening and can choose accordingly.
Cheers,
Peter

I am of two opinions on this:

1) When we raise money we call upon the goodwill people have for the work we
do. We should raise sufficient funds to do the important work we do. We need to
save some for a rainy day, but we should never collect money just for the sake
of it. When we set appropriate fundraising goals and meet them we should thank
all involved and save people's remaining goodwill for the future.

2) People do want to engage with us. Donating is often an easier commitment
than becoming an editor or volunteer programmer. We have 260 proposals, most of
which are excellent, for a community tech team with 6 members. This is
obviously more work than they can take on. More funds for this sort of work is
not a bad problem to have.

With a clear movement strategy I think these will be easier issues to address.
With Katherine at the helm I am confidence that we will soon have such a
strategy. Additionally our financial future looks solid. Many of those entering
the professional world have relied heavily on our work for their education and
as such they in a way view us as an alma mater
.

Congrats to Lisa and her team for another amazing year of fundraising :-) James
