Re: [Wikimedia-l] The latest updates from movement strategy

2019-04-23 Thread Paulo Santos Perneta
"right now, affiliate groups and language communities are taking these
discussions further in community conversations"

Not sure what communities you are talking about here, but as far as I know
onwiki community discussions are completely and totally abandoned by the
Working Groups, even in meta. I've been participating in very active
conversations in telegram groups, but onwiki it's basically the Desert of
Atacama. In a dry day. There is some residual conversation between
community members themselves here and there, but it very quickly dies off
in the very rare instances it occurred.

I wonder what is the idea of keeping carrying on a Strategy process/project
which seems to be so alienated from the online communities that, in the
end, are the ones that really keep making everything moving forward, hour
by hour, day by day.

The fact that some members of some of those communities are part of the WGs
(while others have very residual onwiki activity, if any at all) do not
seem to translate in anything meaningful to those who only have onwiki
contact with the process. And to members of those communities who have not
any member on the WGs, the whole thing is even more disconnected.

It's nice to see so much enthusiasm about the whole thing from the core
group, anyway.

Best,
Paulo

I'll ask the obvious question - why is it not Wikimedia South Korea?

And congrats to the participating Wikimedians on their achievement and

[Wikimedia-l] Introducing our newest chapter, Wikimedia Korea

2019-04-23 Thread María Sefidari
Hi everyone,

I am happy to share that earlier this year, the Wikimedia Foundation Board
of Trustees approved our newest Wikimedia chapter - Wikimedia Korea!

For more information about our newest Wikimedia chapter, Wikimedia Korea,
please see the announcement on the Wikimedia Foundation website:
https://wikimediafoundation.org/2019/04/23/wikimedia-korea-new-chapter-affiliate-launches-in-south-korea/

I want to congratulate the new chapter and recognize their commitment,
efforts, and time involved in moving through the chapter recognition
process over the past year. From their work building partnerships with
universities, to supporting and training new editors in South Korea, we
look forward to seeing the impactful work from our community members in
South Korea as they advance in their new affiliate role.

As many of you know, this is our first chapter approval in several years -
since the newest Wikimedia affiliate approval processes were put in place.
This marks a new moment in the history of our Wikimedia movement
affiliates. The Board appreciates the amazing work coming from these user
groups around the world, and is inspired to see how far some of these
groups have come in terms of their impact both on our movement and their
local communities. Indeed, we should all be proud of the impact our
affiliates continue to have on our projects, our vision, and the world
around us.

Any affiliate interested in becoming a chapter or thematic organization
must have at least two years of activities and experience as a user group
before applying. Please check out the user group creation guide to get a
user group started - it is meant to be very easy:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_user_groups/Creation_guide

You can find a lot more information about our movement affiliates model on

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [strategy process] Fwd: I decided to leave the working group

2019-04-23 Thread Bobby Shabangu
Hi,

   1. Everyone keeps on mentioning the word " money". How much was spent on
the strategy thus far by WMF here? I keep on searching for this information
   I can't find it.
   2. I totally agree with Anders Warnnersten
   3. I believe Itzik you are doing it the right way, this is the right
platform and you don't have to apologise for voicing your opinion, it's
what you feel and the TRUTH, in fact I believe this conversation itself
should form part of the Strategy and the WMF need to think about and
address these issues you are raising honestly.
   4. I hear what you are saying Itzik regarding criticising the way WMF
are going about implementing the strategy movement 2030, but I don't hear
what you suggest WMF or we as the Wikimedia community should do to
correctly go about doing or implementing the strategy the right way. You
are saying " There are so many ways in between that can combine the good in
both ways." I want to hear about those* many ways*.
   5. Just to be clear I'm not taking WMF side or Itzik side. I agree with
Itzik and think Paulo Santos Perneta made some valid points as well, my
question is can we remedy what Itzik has pointed out, how do we move
forward as a movement and actually reach a place where we totally agree
that what will come out of this strategy process truly represents what
everyone feels and where we want to go.

[Wikimedia-l] The latest updates from movement strategy

2019-04-23 Thread Nicole Ebber
Dear Wikimedians,

It has been a big few weeks for movement strategy. Working groups
published scoping documents in March; the core team, working groups,
spent three whirlwind days in Berlin discussing our future with
representatives from the organized segment at the Wikimedia Summit;
and right now, affiliate groups and language communities are taking
these discussions further in community conversations across the world.
Details and a lot of links for further reading below:

== Generating ideas for our future at the Wikimedia Summit ==
Working group members had the chance to engage directly with organized
groups recently at the Wikimedia Summit [1] in Berlin. The questions
in the scoping documents [2] kickstarted conversations about what kind
of changes might be needed, how we can share resources effectively and
establish meaningful partnerships, and how to turn stuck energy into
positive momentum. The program’s adaptive, flexible format meant that
we could tailor sessions as needed and enabled working and organized
groups to connect and exchange in many ways. You can find out more in
our blog post on Meta [3].

== From questions to answers: what the working groups are up to ==
Following the publication of the scoping documents in mid-March and
the Wikimedia Summit, the nine working groups [4] are currently
finalizing a plan of action to conduct research and get the input they
need to start developing recommendations for structural change. From
there, it is all about diving deep into our movement to find which
opportunities we can make the most of. As part of this, working groups
will start getting into the input and insights that arise from
community conversations. This will be used to enrich the content and
bring in the wider perspectives from our diverse movement that will
inform working groups as they draft recommendations for change.

== Take part in our community conversations ==
Community conversations about our future are happening! This is your
opportunity to share your ideas and insight about what in our movement
needs to change. To participate, head over to the Meta-Wiki page [5]
(currently available in 9 languages, with more to come) and share your
thoughts on the talk pages for each scoping document. We have also
contracted Community Strategy Liaisons [6] for the Arabic [7], German
[8], Hindi [9], Mandarin [10], Spanish [11], and Portuguese [12]
communities, who are leading discussions on-wiki and in social media
channels to engage editors, readers, and other participants in
strategy discussions. Finally, volunteer Organizational Strategy
Liaisons [13] are taking the lead to facilitate conversations
representing the perspectives of their organizations - check your
community’s or group’s preferred channels for details.

== What’s next? ==
The focus for the next few months will be on gathering input, data,
insights, and content that will be used to develop recommendations for
structural change. Community conversations will run until June with
communities and organized groups to enrich this whole process - get
involved and have your voice heard. We are also looking for more
representatives from organized groups [14] to become liaisons with the
strategy process.

Let us know what your questions are, and join in to share your perspectives.

Nicole
