[Wikimedia-l] You're invited! Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom - open meeting

2021-04-28 Thread Melissa Guadalupe Huertas
Dear Wikimedians,

[Please, excuse the cross-posting!]

We know how crucial media and information literacy skills are in today's
world and we see the opportunities in the use of Wikipedia as a pedagogical
tool. So how can we continue to support educators to integrate Wikipedia
into their classrooms to foster these skills?

Last year, the Education team at the Wikimedia Foundation launched the Reading
Wikipedia in the Classroom

program in 3 pilot countries: Bolivia, Morocco, and the Philippines. We
worked with local coordinators from the Wikimedia affiliates in each
country to provide an online professional development opportunity to close
to 1000 secondary school teachers

with a localized curriculum

that aligns Wikipedia with UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy
framework.

We would like to invite you to an open meeting where the Education team and
the pilot’s local coordinators will share the experiences of the program:
the curriculum design, the methodology, the impact, and the next steps for
you to get involved!

You can join us on one of these two dates via Zoom:

   -

Thursday, May 6, 13:00 UTC (link to join:
   https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/93678353815)
   -

Friday, May 7, 17:00 UTC (link to join:
   https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/99326961118)

We are eager to share our learnings with you and to continue working
towards a critical inclusion of Wikipedia in education. In the meantime,
you can explore the teacher's guides and booklets developed for the program
available on Wikimedia Commons

.

Please, don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or doubts you might
have (or if you need an invite to the event for your personal calendar).

¡Gracias!

2021-04-28 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello Andreas and all,

There is some good news. Wikimedia Foundation Community Resources team has
given permission to CIS-A2K to allot funds to reimburse vaccines, send
COVID protection kits and provide counselling for Wikimedia volunteers in
India. CIS-A2K has consulted Foreign Currency Regulation Act expert lawyers
and got confirmation that the program can be executed as per the law of
India. With this progress, we are now good to go. We had formed a 5-members
committee of physicians (4 of them) from the Indian Wikimedia volunteer
community. They had their first meeting almost an hour ago to decide the
next steps to provide support as quickly and efficiently as possible. The
action points are noted from the meeting and within a few days, we are sure
that we will be able to provide support to the volunteers. A meta page is
also being drafted, which will undergo expansion and modification in the
next few years. The lnk is here -

Hi Andreas,

Thank you for bringing these questions together here. As you are aware the
questions and answers are also on meta (both the talk:Endowment [1] and the
talk:Fundraising [2]) and we expect to post further answers to those
talkpages during the US West Coast daytime today.

Thank you very much.

new york university (nyu) libraries, the nyu institute of african american
affairs & center for black visual culture (iaaa/cbvc) and afrocrowd are coming
together to bring attention to black culture and the african diaspora on
wikimedia platforms.

the event is inspired by iconic 1970s nyc radio show soul of reason, which
centered on african american affairs and culture, and was hosted by new york
university's dr. roscoe c. brown jr. participants will receive free training
in wikipedia, wikidata, and wikimedia commons. this virtual event takes place
on zoom and is free and open to all. please register below for your link.

website.

more on the soul of reason radio show: soul of reason was a half-hour radio
show that aired from 1971-1986 on both the commercial radio station wnbc and
the university’s radio station, wnyu. the show’s host, dr. roscoe c. brown,
jr., was director of the institute of afro-american (now african american)
affairs at new york university at the time. soul of reason showcased unique and
vital conversations with leaders, politicians, writers, activists, and artists
of african descent in new york city during the civil rights and black power and
arts movements. recordings of soul of reason episodes that aired between
1971-1978 are part of the records of the institute of african american affairs
in nyu special collections.

following two community transcribe-a-thons held in 2020 to edit transcripts of
soul of reason, this virtual wiki edit-a-thon is another chance to listen to
the episodes and read the transcripts, this time while enriching information
about the show and its subjects in wiki platforms.

[Wikimedia-l] COVID-19 second wave and protection of our most valuable movement asset

2021-04-28 Thread Andreas Kolbe
Dear Bodhisattwa,

Could I ask you to please keep us up to date on the further Wikimedia
response to your request?

I would love to hear about anything good that is happening as a result of
your having asked here – and if nothing useful is happening, I would love
to hear about that too – here or by private email, if you prefer.

I am very aware that the WMF ran its first fundraising campaign in India
this fiscal year, and that one of the fundraising banner messages asked
people ... "to donate. Show the volunteers who bring you reliable neutral
information that their work matters."[1]

And as you can read in my other post today, it's not like the Wikimedia
Foundation is poor.

Be safe.
Andreas

Dear Wikimedians,

We (the community resources team at the Wikimedia Foundation) have been in
contact with colleagues from the Wikimedia movement in India and wanted to
share some of the preliminary outcomes of our discussions.

Firstly, we want to acknowledge the disastrous effect COVID-19 has had on
Wikimedia communities and its members across the movement. The COVID-19
pandemic has affected many of us in both direct and indirect ways.

As has been noted by others on this email chain, we all agree that
Wikimedia volunteers are the most valuable assets of our movement. As
mentioned in the previous email, providing insurance support to Wikimedia
volunteers in India would not have been possible due to regulatory and
legal challenges. However, we are committed to provide other help and
service to ensure that the movement is supported.

As discussed on this chain, we feel that our partners are the best placed
to understand the needs locally and regionally. We are therefore working
with colleagues from India directly to provide practical help and support
to the movement there including access to vaccines, PPE kits, disseminating
knowledge and fighting misinformation. We will continue to partner with
them and others to establish criteria in line with our mission to support
the communities. These are exceptional times, indeed but together we will
be able to make a difference and support each other.

For any questions about this initiative please feel free to contact:
communityresour...@wikimedia.org

Regards,

On behalf of Community Resources Team,

Tanveer Hasan

Re: [Wikimedia-l] WMF transfers $8.7 million to "Wikimedia Knowledge Equity Fund"

2021-04-28 Thread Andreas Kolbe
Hi Lisa and all,

Could you provide any update on what is happening with the $8.7 million in
the Tides Advocacy fund? I asked about it on the Endowment talk page on
Meta two weeks ago, and while many other questions there have been
answered, this one has not.

I also asked on Meta how much money the WMF had contributed to the
Endowment to date. Amy Parker just replied it had been $20 million,[1] but
that can't be right, as in the audited 2019/2020 financial statements
published last year (page no. 14), it was already $25 million ($5 million
p.a. over five years).[2]

A curious side-effect of the Endowment is that money the WMF pays into its
own Endowment shows up as an Awards and Grants *expense* in the audited
statements, reducing the revenue surplus. Money flowing into the Endowment,
on the other hand, is included neither in Revenue nor Net Assets, as it is
legally separate.[7]

So according to the financial statements for the last five years, the WMF
had a revenue surplus of over $100 million over that time period (measured
as increase in net assets, from $77.8 million to $180.3 million). But over
the same period, the Foundation also accumulated $100 million in Tides
Foundation funds (i.e. the Endowment, reported[6] to have passed $90
million in early February, and the $8.7 million in Tides Advocacy).

This means that the Foundation has actually had a revenue surplus of more
than $200 million over the past five years, averaging over $40 million per
annum.

Could you provide an update on exactly how much many money is in the
Endowment and the Tides Advocacy fund at the moment? The Endowment is not
very transparent. I understand the only page showing how much money has
accumulated in the Endowment is the page on Meta, and this has only
sporadically been updated. In this edit,[3] for example, it jumped from
$62.9 million to $90 million. Before that, the total had last been updated
more than six months prior.[4]

Would it be possible to provide, say, monthly updates for the Endowment on
Meta? (If I have missed any other pages or documents containing such
information, I would ask you to kindly provide a link.)

In the discussions on Meta, Pats Peña pointed me to the FAQ[5] for the most
recent financial statements. One thing I miss in these FAQs is any
reference to the $100 million held by the Tides Foundation. Readers of the
FAQ will remain unaware that the actual amount of investments the WMF was
the beneficiary of in July 2020 substantially exceeded the figure of $170
million given in the audited financial statements the FAQ refers to –
including the Tides funds, by well over $70 million when the FAQ was
published.

I also cannot see any reference to the fact that the expenses noted in the
FAQ include $5 million that the WMF paid into its own endowment. Could this
be remedied in this and future FAQs?

Finally, if we were trying to provide a best estimate of the Wikimedia
Foundation's current total net assets (last reported as $180 million,
excluding money in the Tides Foundation), would $200 million be in the
right ballpark, for a grand total of $300 million if we include the Tides
Foundation money?

I understand that fundraising this fiscal year already exceeded the
combined year goal for the Foundation and endowment after the first six
months, followed by the year goal being raised, and exceeded again before
the end of the second quarter.[8] As fundraising continues (currently in
Mexico, I understand), it seems certain the WMF net assets are once again
likely to have risen substantially by the end of the fiscal year,
especially given that once again, many physical events will have had to be
cancelled owing to the pandemic.

Best wishes,
Andreas

[Wikimedia-l] Mailman3 is now deployed to production, mailing lists are upgrading

2021-04-28 Thread Amir Sarabadani
Hello,

TLDR: Mailman3 is now available for general use, all mailing lists will be
migrated in the next couple of weeks, providing everyone with a much better
mailing list experience. You will notice some changes, let us know if you
run into issues.

Long version:
We're happy to announce that Mailman3 is available for general use and some
have already been migrated. You can find the current mailing lists that
have been migrated at [1] and their archives in "hyperkitty"[2].

Mailman3 is a full rewrite of our previous mailing list software
(Mailman2), and the migration is long overdue. Some key new features that
we want to highlight:
* One user account (no more monthly password reminder emails or list
passwords)
* Ability to search through archives
* Posting through a web interface
* A web interface that doesn't look like its from the early 2000s
* Better security of accounts and messages

The first mailing list migrated was LGBT@ and you can see its mailing list
page in [3]. We are going to slowly migrate the rest of mailing lists (all
+700 of them), you can track the work in [4]. All new mailing lists from
now on will be only on Mailman3.

This means:
* We will send an email to admins of any mailing list right before
starting the upgrade process, and once it's finished.
* The link to subscribe to lists will change, please update your wiki
pages, documentation, etc. We will provide redirects though.
* Links to old archives for public mailing lists won't break. It will
stay at it is now and will become redirects shortly. But URLs of archived
emails of private mailing lists will break. This is necessary for improving
security of mailing lists. Keep it in mind that in the new system you can
easily search in the archives.

Given that in Mailman3, you can simply have one central account for all of
your mailing lists. We highly encourage you to make one [1], that way, you
can easily control what mailing lists you are subscribed to, easily join
new mailing lists and much more. This also makes administrating and
moderating mailing lists much easier.

If you have any questions or you encounter any issues, let us know! You can
create a Phabricator ticket ("Wikimedia-Mailing-lists" project) or ping us
on IRC in #wikimedia-tech.

We hope that Mailman3 brings much needed love to our mailing lists without
breaking your workflows (like reading mails by piping telnet into less or
something like that).
