+1, not just en:wp. I'd love to see community mods involved in maintaining
the core social accounts. We could certainly queue up messages on a
wikipage using existing scripts and tools, in a way that could be
multiplexed across different media channels (and the workflow used by
anyone federating such updates to other platforms). Slight tweaks to
ITN/DYK formats in many languages (optimizing for embeds, replies,
threading) would make great posts. [and we have solid social media stars in
the community who could help as well or guest-curate from time to time]

The English Wikipedia community has managed the Main Page in English for
many years, including rapidly updated ITN and DYK sections. The prominence
of the Main Page has declined a little bit as a landing page, but it
suggests that there may be better alternatives to staff planning tweets out
a few weeks ahead and taking submissions via a Google form. Perhaps the
communications team can look into some of these options that might leverage
the strength and core competencies of the community?

2022-07-12 Thread Lauren Dickinson
Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing well and enjoying the new images from
the Webb telescope. They are truly incredible.

In response to Lodewijk's question, the Foundation's Communications
Department manages the English Wikipedia social media accounts (on Facebook
, Twitter
, and Instagram
), as well as the Wikimedia
Foundation accounts. There is more information about that on Meta-Wiki
.

We try to plan the content calendar about one to two weeks in advance, but
we stay flexible to react to current events and Wikimedia news. We always
welcome ideas for articles and content to share from both the Wikimedia
Foundation and Wikipedia channels. You can share ideas with us at any time
via this Google Form
.
Amplifying the work of volunteers in the movement is important to us, and
we value suggestions on opportunities for us to do this further.

Regarding the Webb telescope news, we are planning to share the related
Wikipedia article as this Friday's Article of the Week
 on
Wikipedia's social media channels, and to highlight that the images are
available on Commons. Every Friday, we share an article that is relevant to
current global events and conversations (e.g. we shared about Hajj
 last week), so
we thought the Webb telescope would be a perfect fit for this week.

We also look for opportunities to retweet posts from others related to
Wikimedia and current topics. For example, we just shared this post from
Wikimedia Chile
about the Webb images. With this approach, we can share about the same
topic in multiple ways, from a range of perspectives, and celebrate
community groups. Another way is by sharing blog posts and media coverage
that mention us.

With that in mind, another idea I would like to propose is a blog post on
Diff that tells the story of how Wikimedia
communities responded to the release of the images and made sure
information and the photos were quickly available on Wikimedia projects.
This is just an idea. If anyone is interested in writing that blog, please
let us know! We can then amplify the post on social media to bring it more
visibility.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

[Wikimedia-l] Sharing the Wikimedia Foundation’s Human Rights Impact Assessment

2022-07-12 Thread Richard Gaines
Hello!

In December 2021, the Wikimedia Foundation announced

our new Human Rights Policy. At the time, we also committed

to publishing more information from the Human Rights Impact Assessment
(HRIA) that helped to inform the policy. Today, I am glad to be able to
share that HRIA with you all.

Wikimedia projects play an important role in enabling people around the
world to exercise their human rights, including the right to access
knowledge. As host of these projects, the Foundation is committed to
protect and respect the human rights of all those who use our projects to
access, share, and contribute knowledge. In recognizing this critical role,
we commissioned the Human Rights Impact Assessment in 2020 to provide a
better understanding of potential human rights harms our projects may
inadvertently cause as well as recommendations to address them. We release
the report now to invite broader discussion on the report’s findings and
recommendations in order to determine which ones the Foundation should
prioritize moving forward.

You can find the assessment on Meta-Wiki
,
which includes a foreword authored by the Foundation, an executive summary
of the assessment, and a detailed analysis of the five categories of human
rights risks identified in the report (harmful content, harassment,
government surveillance and censorship, impacts on child rights, and
limitations on knowledge equity). The foreword and executive summary are
also available in Arabic
,
Chinese (Traditional)
,
French
,
Russian
,
and Spanish
.
You can also find more information about the assessment in a blog post

on Diff.

We will be hosting a series of conversation hours in the coming weeks where
we invite feedback and ask questions about the assessment:

   -

14 July (18:00–19:30 UTC): Community Affairs Committee Meeting

   -

28 July (12:00 UTC): Global Advocacy Community Conversation Hour

   -

28 July (17:00 UTC): Global Advocacy Community Conversation Hour

We also invite questions and feedback on the discussion page

of the assessment on Meta-Wiki as well as through the Movement Strategy
Forum

.

This assessment can help all stakeholders in the Wikimedia movement to
better understand the human rights risks and threats that we jointly face,
and the work required to reduce those risks. By doing so, the Foundation,
volunteers, and affiliates can work together to protect both our movement
and our people.

We look forward to engaging with all of you on this HRIA, its
recommendations, and your thoughts on how to move forward on the insights
offered by this report.

Thank you,

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Affiliations Committee's standing on hubs and its role in the process

2022-07-12 Thread Gnangarra
As hubs are not replacing the relationship between affiliates and affcom,
hubs purpose is to serve its community across multiple countries. I can
see the value in Affcom sharing some of its experiences but I caution
against the building of deeper power structures that widen the gap between
individual contributors, the BOT, and the WMF. That gap will get even
wider once the global council is put in place, there are already
significant communication problems, made worse by the lack of project
experience within the WMF staff, its contractors, and the BOT

For many years these hubs have successfully existed outside Affcom control,
I think there should be greater respect shown to hubs for that work
treating hubs as pilots is itself disrespectful. Outside of Europe where EU
law allows cross border responsibility, hubs governance structures face
considerable legal hurdles from insurance to individuals being required to
make themselves subject to the laws of another jurisdiction to hold a
position of responsibility.

I wholeheartedly support this point, these discussions need to run
independent Affcom.

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Affiliations Committee's standing on hubs and its role in the process

2022-07-12 Thread Ilario Valdelli
That's a good option but I suppose that the same Affcom structure must be
re-considered probably enlarging the number of members and diversifying
more in terms of representatives of the different stakeholders (including
maybe more people from the affiliates and chapters?).

This discussion should be naturally a discussion done by the community and
not by the Affcom itself, naturally, like it's happening for the whole
strategy.

Kind regards

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Affiliations Committee's standing on hubs and its role in the process

2022-07-12 Thread Philip Kopetzky
Hi Wojciech,

thanks for this statement, it will definitely be helpful to have AffCom's
insights into the current affiliates network when talking about hubs. While
approval by the WMF BoT is one option, wouldn't that require a hub to be a
formal organisation? Otherwise the BoT would be involved in micro-managing
project grants that are funding some of the hub pilots.

It would also be helpful to design the process in a way that has the Global
Council in mind where in its absence the WMF BoT acts in its absence, to
make clear that this is only a temporary solution because of how slow
progress on the movement charter has been in the last two years.

Best,
Philip
