[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Open call for candidates for the Northern and Western Europe Funds Committee

2022-08-15 Thread Marti Johnson
The Wikimedia Foundation’s Community Resources team and the Northern and
Western Europe (NWE) Committee invite you to apply to become a committee
member in the Northern and Western Europe (NWE) region. The NWE Committee
supports the Wikimedia Foundation Funds [1] programs' participatory
grantmaking practice. *The deadline for applying is September 4, 2022*.

The NWE Committee reviews grant proposals from affiliates and other
community members within the NWE region who are seeking grant funding from
the Wikimedia Foundation. Committee responsibilities include: providing
thought partnership to help support applicants and strengthen their
strategy and proposals; evaluating and recommending promising proposals for
funding; and helping recruit and spread the word about grants. Orientation
and training is provided for new members.

Serving committee members will have the opportunity to advise on funding
decisions and proactively share recommendations and mentorship to support
grantees in the Northern and Western Europe region in their development,
growth, and sustainability strategies; that contribute to a world in which
every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. You
will also strengthen your capacity in participatory decision-making
processes while learning about our community's incredible work and the
different contexts that influence their work.

You can read more about the open call for NWE Committee members, including
eligibility requirements, roles and responsibilities, our approaching to
grantmaking and more, at:

who believe in the value of Wikipedia to advance key 21st-century skills
[1] and who are interested in
implementing the “Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom” program in their own

Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom

[2] is a professional development program for teachers that guides them to
approach Wikipedia through UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy
framework - leveraging the value of Wikipedia as a pedagogical tool. The
educational resources

of the program have already been adapted to 9 languages [3], and Certified
Trainers of the program have led implementations in Nigeria

[4], Bolivia

[5] and Guinea [6], to name a few countries

The Training of Trainers program is a 9-week online learning experience
that prepares participants to implement the Reading Wikipedia in the
Classroom program locally. By the end of the ToT, successful participants
will be certified to lead the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program in
their countries. Participants who successfully complete the ToT will also
have access to a pool of funding that can support their first
implementation of the program. Applications are open from August 15 to
September 4, 2022. You can find the application form, important dates, and
general guidance on Meta-Wiki

[7] and check out this newsletter article

[8] to learn about the experience and learnings of the first ToT cohort in
2021.

You’re invited to join the information session on August 25 at 13:30 UTC
where we’ll share more details and answer any pending questions (find the
link to join on Meta-Wiki). If you have any questions ahead of this event,
please don’t hesitate to reach out to the team educat...@wikimedia.org

We look forward to seeing you there!

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Save the date: Conversation hour with Maggie Dennis on Community Resilience & Sustainability on August 18

2022-08-15 Thread Maggie Dennis
Hello, all. :)

I'm Maggie Dennis, the Foundation's Vice President of Community Resilience
& Sustainability. I wanted to remind you that this event is in three days,
in case you aren't exhausted after an amazing Wikimania and want to connect
with me. Any Wikimedian in good standing (that is, not Foundation or
community banned) is welcome to attend or submit questions. Given
everything else going on, I won't be surprised if it's a rather low-key
conversation. :D

   - I can't and won't discuss specific Trust & Safety cases. Instead, I
can discuss Trust & Safety protocols and practices and approaches as well
as some of the mistakes we've made, some of the things I'm proud of, and
some of the things we're hoping to do.
   - I will not respond to comments or questions that are disrespectful to
me, to my colleagues, or to anyone in our communities. I can talk civilly
about our work even if you disagree with me or I disagree with you. I won't
   compromise on this.

Oh! The YouTube link is also available now.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWaOztj_S1k

Hope to see some of you there!

Best,
Maggie
