[Wikimedia-l] Re: The 2022 Board of Trustees election Community Voting period is now open

2022-09-07 Thread Envel Le Hir
Hello,

It seems that the vote is now closed. I made a script [1] to check that
voters comply with some of the rules of voting eligibility [2].

I found two cases of non-compliance:
* one person voted twice, once with their main account and once with their
bot account (User:Uziel302 and User:Uzielbot, the latter vote has been
struck after I reported the case to the elections committee);
* one person voted twice, once with their personal account and once with
their professional account as an employee of Wikimedia Deutschland
(User:Masssly [3] and User:Mohammed_Sadat_(WMDE) [4]).

Note that Masssly is a member of the Wikimedia Foundation elections
committee [5].

I'm only providing the data, I have no official role in this election and I
don't wish to comment (I certainly don't have the whole picture), even
though I'm sad to see some people repeatedly causing concerns at the
occasions of elections.

[Wikimedia-l] Voting for BoT closes - timeline for result

2022-09-07 Thread Katie Chan
Thank you to all who participated in the 2022 Wikimedia Foundation Board
of Trustees election! Voting closed September 6 at 23:59. The official
data, including the two most voted candidates, will be announced

on or after September 21st. Please note these will be preliminary
results. The official announcement of the new trustees will happen
later, once the candidates have been approved and appointed by the Board.

5,955 community members from 194 wiki projects have voted. This makes
8.8% global participation. In 2021, 6,946 people from 216 wiki projects
cast their vote. A full analysis is planned to be published when the
results are announced. In the meantime, you can check the data produced
during the election
.

Diversity was an important goal with these elections. Messages about the
Board of Trustees election were translated into about 40 languages
thanks to election volunteers and community members.

Best,

The Elections Committee

[Wikimedia-l] Re:  Back for a third round! Apply to join the Training of Trainers for Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom

2022-09-07 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
Dear Wikimedians and friends,

*We have an important announcement! *
We have extended the deadline for the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom
Training of Trainers for underrepresented regions.

One of our goals for each cohort of the Reading Wikipedia ToT is to form a
diverse cohort where people representing different regions, countries,
languages, and education systems can learn from each other and share with
one another. We've received an overwhelming response to our call for
applications, but there are some regions that are underrepresented. We want
to extend the deadline to ensure we have a cohort representative of the
world.

If you are from Latin America, MENA, East Asia and the Pacific (ESEAP), or
South Asia, you still have until *September 9, 2022*, to apply:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeBt_tKvgQ5WbHa5TyOA-aROEC76jeID_kmKG35_ZYEpK1l7g/viewform
This survey will be conducted via a third-party service, which may subject
it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and data handling,
see the survey privacy statement

.

Are you curious about how to get started? We have all the details and
recording of the latest information session on Meta:

Please help us share this opportunity in your circle.

Best!

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Decentralized fundraising, centralized distribution

2022-09-07 Thread Nathan
Hi Nicole,

Thanks for sharing this - very interesting reading so far. I'm hoping you
can elaborate on WMDE's thinking around selecting INGOs for evaluation.
Your criteria is very straightforward - INGOs with a confederation of
independent organizations, connected by a global mission.

But each of your selected INGOs is composed of individual organizations
that deliver the products and services that advance the global mission
within their geographic area, with an "international office" that fulfills
a coordination and governance role. By contrast, the bulk of
mission-related services from the Wikimedia movement are offered to the
world at large centrally by the international office (i.e. the Wikimedia
projects). Did WMDE consider how comparable these INGOs are to the
Wikimedia movement in this sense? I don't see a section of your paper that
compares the service/product delivery structure of these INGOs, so perhaps
this distinction did not come up during your review? Or is the thinking
that decentralization of project hosting and support is on the table, and
the report can inform that consideration?

Thanks for any insight you can share,
Nate

[Wikimedia-l] Decentralized fundraising, centralized distribution

2022-09-07 Thread Nicola Zeuner
The Wikimedia Deutschland Movement Strategy & Global Relations Team has
published Paper #2 in the WMDE-authored series on Movement Strategy topics.

Titled Decentralized Fundraising, Centralized Distribution
,
this research report describes the fundraising and distribution practices
of eight large international NGO confederations and networks, and puts them
in the context of the changing Wikimedia Movement.

2030 Movement Strategy calls on us to change many things - among them how
we generate and share funds among regions, affiliates and communities.
Subsidiarity, equity, and participation are just some of the key values and
principles to be incorporated.

At the 2022 Wikimedia Summit, funding and redistribution will be discussed
in detail. Wikimedians will later write their agreements in the charter,
hub policies, and the fundraising policy.

The report's overview of existing practices will help create a joint
language and inform the discussions.

The paper deliberately refrains from recommendations. In addition to the
research, it does provide an overview of the history of Wikimedia resource
development, discusses the elements of movement strategy related to
funding, and finally poses a series of questions helpful to frame the
further conversation.

Looking forward to comments and a good discussion.

best,

Nikki
