A few months ago, Revital Poleg, Wikimedia Israel ED, informed the board
that she had decided to retire. Revital joined Wikimedia Israel after long
and extensive career years in the private, public, political and social
sectors. She held a number of positions as a diplomat, as Chief of Staff
for the Knesset Speaker, as one of the founders of the Peres Peace Center,
and in her previous position as the Head of the Jewish Agency Mission to
Brazil. It was a great privilege that she decided that her last position
would be at Wikimedia Israel.

Revital joined Wikimedia Israel just a month before Covid-19 changed
everything that we knew about our operations, our employees, our
volunteers, and our fundraising. With a very short transition, she managed
to stabilize the organization, adopt many of our programs and activities
into the "new" digital way, accomplish our annual plan and targets, and
more. And in two years of economic uncertainty and changes in the policy
and focus of many of the philanthropic funds and private donors - she
succeeded in meeting the fundraising goals and ensuring the ongoing
activities of the organization.

Revital’s role in WMIL was beyond that of an employee, but a true leader
and belief in Wikimedia’s values and mission. Her round-the-clock
investment and great love for the movement, organization, its employees,
and volunteers, serve proof.
The Board, and I personally, would like to thank Revital for her great
contribution that brought us! May this retirement be the best part of your
life.

While Revital is leaving, On behalf of our board, I am delighted to
announce that *Michal Wander Schwarz*, will be the new Executive Director
of Wikimedia Israel (yes, also our first ED before Revital was named
Michal!).

Michal has nearly twenty years of experience in non-profit organizations -
she founded and managed the Interdisciplinary Center for At-Risk Children
and Youth Studies at Tel Aviv University. She was later the director of the
cultural services department in her hometown, where she implemented a new
vision and strategic plan for the city’s culture that was executed by
forming community teams of volunteers and consultants and initiating
partnerships with the business sector. In her last position, Michal served
as the developer and founder of community centers while serving as the
director of operations and fundraising.

Michal will officially enter her new role on Jan 25th.

חברים יקרים,

לפני מספר חודשים רויטל עדכנה את הוועד על רצונה לצאת לפרישה מוקדמת. רויטל
הצטרפה אל ויקימדיה ישראל לאחר קריירה ארוכה ומרשימה במגזר הפרטי, הציבורי,
הפוליטי והחברתי. היא החזיקה במספר תפקידים כדיפלומטית, כראש הסגל של יו"ר
הכנסת, כאחת המייסדות של מרכז פרס לשלום ובתפקידה האחרון כראש המשלחת של
הסוכנות היהודית ברזיל. זה היה כבוד גדול לנו שהיא החליטה שאת תפקידה האחרון
היא תעשה בוויקימדיה ישראל.

רויטל הצטרפה אלינו רק חודש לפני שהקורונה צצה לחיינו ושינתה את כל מה שהכרנו,
על הפעילות שלנו, העובדים, המתנדבים, ודרך העבודה שלנו. עם חפיפה מאוד קצרה,
היא הצליחה לייצב את הארגון בזמן האי-וודאות הזה, לעדכן רבות מהתכניות שלנו
לדרך הדיגיטלית החדשה שלא היתה מוכרת לנו, לעמוד בכל יעדי תכנית העבודה ועוד
יותר מזה. ובשנתיים של אי וודאות בתחום גיוס הכספים ובזמן שרוב הקרנות
הפילנתרופיות שינו את יעדי ומדיניות התרומה שלהם, היא הצליחה לעמוד ביעדי
הגיוס ולהבטיח את המשך הפעילות של הארגון.

חלקה של רויטל בוויקימדיה ישראל היה מעבר לעובדת, אלא כמנהיגה ומאמינה אמיתית
בערכי ויקימדיה והחזון שלה. המחוייבות שלו מסביב לשעון, האהבה הרבה שלה
לארגון, לעובדיו ולמתנדבים היו ההוכחה לכך.

הוועד המנהל, ואני אישית, מבקשים להודות לרויטל על תרומתה הרבה, ואנחנו מקווים
שתמצאי את האושר וההנאה בפרק הבא שלפניך.

זו ההזדמנות להודיע כי *מיכל וונדר שוורץ* תחליף את רויטל כמנכ"לית ויקימדיה
ישראל (אכן, גם המנכ"לית הראשונה של הארגון היתה מיכל..).

מיכל מגיעה אלינו עם ניסיון של כמעט 20 שנה בארגונים חברתיים. היא הקימה
וניהלה את המרכז החינוכי לילדים ונוער בסיכון באוניברסיטת תל אביב, היא ניהלה
את אגף התרבות בעמותה לתרבות פנאי ותיירות של  זכרון יעקב, שם היא בנתה
והטמיעה חזון ותכנית אסטרטגית חדשה לתרבות בעיר יחד עם הקהילות והמתנדבים
בעיר, הובילה אירועי תרבות גדולים בשותפויות עם החברה העסקית ובתפקידה האחרון
בארגון היתה מנהלת פיתוח המשאבים והקימה וניהלה את מרכזי הקהילה בעיר.

רויטל מסיימת מחר את עבודה בוויקימדיה ישראל ותוכלו לפגוש אותה באירוע יום
ההולדת ומיכל תחל את תפקידה ב-25.1

בהצלחה מיכל!

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2023 Scholarships Open: Apply Now!

Hello everyone,

Scholarship applications for Wikimania 2023 are now open until Sunday, 5
February! Wikimania 2023 will be held in Singapore from 16–19 August. This
year, we aim to be inclusive for Wikimedians worldwide in line with this
edition’s theme: “Diversity. Collaboration. Future.”

Scholarships for Wikimania 2023 are available in different types for
traveling to Singapore:

   -

   Full scholarship: travel, accommodation, and registration are provided;
   -

   Partial scholarship: accommodation and registration are provided.

All scholarship recipients are covered by Wikimedia Foundation Travel
Insurance Policy.

Whereas scholarship recipients have historically written a report to
fulfill scholarship requirements, this year they will have the opportunity
to do volunteer tasks during Wikimania. The Committee will work with
recipients to find a volunteer role that suits each recipient’s skills and
experience. Scholarship recipients opting to volunteer rather than write a
report will be asked to volunteer for 2 hours over the course of Wikimania,
with the option to volunteer more hours if desired.

Apply now!  Make sure to
share your experiences during your Wikimedia movement journey and support
with links. Newcomers to Wikimedia will be considered. The deadline to
apply for a scholarship is 5th February, end of the day anywhere in the
world. Applicants will be notified of decisions in May.

Vital Signsː Measuring Wikipedia Communities’ HealthBy *Cristian Consonni,
Eurecat - Centre Tecnològic de Catalunya, Barcelona*Community health in
Wikipedia is a complex topic that has been at the center of discussion for
Wikipedia and the scientific community for years. Researchers observed that
the number of active editors for the largest Wikipedias started declining
after an initial phase of exponential growth. Some media outlets picked
this fact as a death announcement for the project, but the news of
Wikipedia's death turned out to be greatly exaggerated. However, it remains
true that researchers and community activists need to understand how to
measure community health and describe it more accurately. In this
presentation, we would like to go beyond the traditional metrics used to
describe the status of the community. We propose the creation of 6 sets of
language-independent indicators that we call "Vital Signs." We borrow the
analogy from the medical field, as these indicators represent a first step
in defining the health status of a community; they can constitute a
valuable reference point to foresee and prevent future risks. We present
our analysis for several Wikipedia language editions, showing that
communities renew their productive force even with stagnating absolute
numbers; we observe a general need for renewal in positions related to
particular functions or administratorship. We created a dashboard to
visualize all the indicators we have computed and hope that the communities
will find it helpful for improving their health.

Learning to Predict the Departure Dynamics of Wikidata EditorsBy *Guangyuan
Piao, Maynooth University*Wikidata as one of the largest open collaborative
knowledge bases has drawn much attention from researchers and practitioners
since its launch in 2012. As it is collaboratively developed and maintained
by a community of a great number of volunteer editors, understanding and
predicting the departure dynamics of those editors are crucial but have not
been studied extensively in previous works. In this paper, we investigate
the synergistic effect of two different types of features: statistical and
pattern-based ones with DeepFM as our classification model which has not
been explored in a similar context and problem for predicting whether a
Wikidata editor will stay or leave the platform. Our experimental results
show that using the two sets of features with DeepFM provides the best
performance regarding AUROC (0.9561) and F1 score (0.8843), and achieves
substantial improvement compared to using either of the sets of features
and over a wide range of baselines.
