[Wikimedia-l] Invitation to the Demo Day of the Wikimedia Accelerator UNLOCK on October 27th

2022-10-25 Thread Kannika Thaimai
Dear fellow Wikimedians, please mark your calendar!

Wikimedia Deutschland, Wikimedia Serbia and Impact Hub Belgrade invite you
to join us on October 27th as we set the stage for the participants of the
UNLOCK Accelerator 2022: Seven project teams will showcase their prototypes at
this year’s Demo Day!

In no more than four months the participants of the Wikimedia Accelerator
UNLOCK [1] have developed open source prototypes that offer concrete
solutions to this year’s challenge "Access to knowledge is a matter of
equity"[2]. Become inspired by a platform that safeguards indigenous
knowledge on biodiversity in the Amazon; a tool that offers support in
translating politically sensitive terms; a browser extension providing
user-generated audio descriptions to the visually impaired; and many more!

We would like to invite you to meet the teams as they showcase their
prototypes!

WHEN? Thursday, October 27th, 2022 at 1-3pm CEST.

WHERE? The Demo Day is a hybrid event. Join us online or in person at the
Impact Hub Belgrade, Makedonska 21, Beograd 11000, Serbia.

Please REGISTER HERE

UNLOCK is a program of Wikimedia Deutschland (WMDE), in collaboration
with Wikimedia
Serbia (WMRS) and Impact Hub Belgrade.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Best regards,

Kannika (WMDE)

[Wikimedia-l] Kicking off UNLOCK Accelerator 2022: New edition – new project teams – new ideas

2022-07-13 Thread Kannika Thaimai
Dear fellow Wikimedians,

We are very excited to inform you that within the third edition of the
Wikimedia Accelerator UNLOCK, which has been running by Wikimedia
Deutschland (WMDE) and Wikimedia Serbia (WMRS) in collaboration with Impact
Hub Belgrade, we will support seven innovative, bold, engaging and diverse
projects – with a total of 24 participants from Albania, Germany,
Montenegro and Serbia. The projects show and have convinced us throughout
the selection process with new perspectives for free knowledge – and
addressing knowledge equity – in different regional as well as thematic
contexts.

In the next four months we will support the teams with coaching, a variety
of workshops with experts, regular exchanges and funding. We look forward
to working with these following teams who will validate and test their
ideas and turn their concepts into functional prototypes:

   -

activist.org – an open source platform that breaks down barriers to
becoming politically active and thereby connects people and organizations
from different social and activist movements. [
   https://www.wikimedia.de/unlock/unlock-projects/activist-org/]
   -

Game of political participation – encouraging young people in the
Western Balkans to familiarize themselves with political decision making
and political systems through elements of gamification. [

https://www.wikimedia.de/unlock/unlock-projects/game-of-political-participation/
   ]
   -

f[ai]r – establishing an ethics certification for digital applications
through a holistic examination of the AI system in the social context,
addressing aspects of bias, discrimination, diversity and inclusion. [
   https://www.wikimedia.de/unlock/unlock-projects/fair/]
   -

Inclusio – providing user-generated audio descriptions of visual content
to the blind and visually impaired. Ideally the solution could be connected
and tested on structured data in Wikimedia Commons. [
   https://www.wikimedia.de/unlock/unlock-projects/inclusio/]
   -

macht.sprache. – fostering politically sensitive translation through an
open source platform that allows for crowdsourcing and discussing
politically sensitive terms and their translations, and through a tool to
   help translate with sensitivity. [
   https://www.wikimedia.de/unlock/unlock-projects/macht-sprache/]
   -

MOCI SPACE – a digital space to connect activists, grassroots
initiatives and civil society actors in the Western Balkans and that allows
for co-creating, publishing and sharing knowledge by making use of the
Matrix protocol for federated communication. [
   https://www.wikimedia.de/unlock/unlock-projects/moci-space/]
   -

P2P Wiki for indigenous wisdom and biodiversity – an open source tool to
collect and safeguard indigenous knowledge, and to raise awareness about
   biodiversity with a P2P offline-first methodology. [
   https://www.wikimedia.de/unlock/unlock-projects/p2p/]

Feel free to click through the projects for further details.

In addition, we shared our learnings and insights from the selection
process and the kickoff of the program in the following diff blog. [

[Wikimedia-l] UNLOCK free knowledge projects | 10 days left to apply

2022-05-18 Thread Kannika Thaimai
Dear fellow Wikimedians,

We would like to remind you of the open call for applications to join the
Wikimedia accelerator program – UNLOCK <https://www.wikimedia.de/unlock/>.

Applications are open until May 29th!

== What type of ideas are we looking for? ==

The program calls for ideas and projects that break down social and
technical barriers preventing people from both accessing and contributing
to free knowledge. The ideas could cover

   -

new technologies or tools that support more diverse modes and formats of
knowledge (audio, visual, video, etc.). One example for this is an UNLOCK
2020 project Audiopedia – an open source platform for audio content that
addresses primarily non-readers in the Global South <
   https://www.audiopedia.org/>; or
   -

further development of existing Wikimedia projects to create new impact
projects, such as GovDirectory (participants in UNLOCK 2021) – a global
directory of government agencies and their online presence by utilizing
Wikidata. This project does not only use Wikidata, but also help improve
   the data on Wikidata <

https://www.wikimedia.de/unlock/unlock-projects/government-online-presence-directory/>;
   or
   -

alternative practices and concepts that create more opportunities for
everyone to participate in free knowledge projects – your idea for a more
inclusive representation of the diverse knowledge of our world.

== Who can apply? ==

We are looking for Wikimedians as well as free knowledge enthusiasts,
developers, designers and activists from outside the Wikimedia movement.
UNLOCK 2022 has a geographical focus on Western Balkans and German-speaking
regions.

== Additional information and support ==

Please head over to the UNLOCK program page for details <

[Wikimedia-l] UNLOCK free knowledge projects | Call for application

2022-04-05 Thread Kannika Thaimai
Dear fellow Wikimedians,

We are happy to announce that applications for the innovation program
UNLOCK open from today – April 5th! We are calling for ideas and projects
that break down social and technical barriers preventing people from both
accessing and contributing to free knowledge.

In alignment with recommendation 9 “Innovate in free knowledge” [1] of the
Movement Strategy, we look for early stage projects that address knowledge
equity, including technical ones that make the access and contribution to
knowledge easier, more inclusive and equitable. We also look for
non-technical projects, concepts or standards that create more
opportunities for everyone to participate in free knowledge projects –
leading to a more inclusive representation of the diverse knowledge of our
world.

Participating teams will benefit from a structured online program with
tailored coaching, access to an international network of experts,
peer-to-peer exchange and a scholarship.

== Who is the program for? ==

We are looking for Wikimedians as well as free knowledge enthusiasts,
developers, designers and activists from outside the Wikimedia movement.
For this year’s edition, Wikimedia Deutschland teamed up with Wikimedia
Serbia to co-design and co-host the program which will have a regional
focus on the Western Balkan and German-speaking area. This means that
applications are open to project teams (of a minimum of two and no more
than five members) from the following countries: Albania, Austria,
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Germany, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia as well as
Serbia and Switzerland. The program language is English in order to enable
exchange and create synergies among the cross-regional project teams.
UNLOCK is designed to work completely virtually.

Applications are open from April 5th until May 29th!

== You want to apply? ==

Great – we look forward to your ideas! Please head over to the UNLOCK
program page [2] for details (incl. eligibility criteria, program timeline,
application form and more) If you require further assistance with your
application or if you have an idea but are not sure whether or not to
apply, feel free to reach out to the organizing team behind the program via
Email: unl...@wikimedia.de

== You know people who would be interested in this program? ==

Feel free to share this call in your network and community beyond the
mailing list.

Warm regards,
Kannika (WMDE) and Ivana (WMRS)

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Innovate in Free Knowledge | UNLOCK the power of collaboration!

2022-03-18 Thread Kannika Thaimai
Hi Todd,

UNLOCK is a support program, intended to help participants turn their ideas
into a functional prototype or even more. As a participant of the program,
you and your team can benefit from experienced coaches and mentors who can
help you with the implementation of your project (e.g. with regards to
product development). Further, we bring all the participants together for
peer-to-peer exchange and also bring in other experts who can provide
expertise and inspirations.

Examples from existing UNLOCK projects include:

   - GovDirectory – a directory of government agencies and their online
   presence by utilizing Wikidata [1].
   - Audiopedia – a platform that provides audio content about nutrition,
health, etc. It's community-based and uses MediaWiki as the technical
framework to provide audio content in different languages [2].

I hope I could clarify your question. Feel free to reach out to me if you
still have further questions.

Best

[Wikimedia-l] Innovate in Free Knowledge | UNLOCK the power of collaboration!

2022-03-17 Thread Kannika Thaimai
Dear Movement members,

The innovation program UNLOCK will soon enter its third edition. At UNLOCK
[1], we support people and communities who are working on new ideas,
products and services for Wikimedia and free knowledge that address gaps in
knowledge equity. Participating teams will benefit from tailored coaching
and mentoring, peer-to-peer exchange and collaboration, access to experts
from the free knowledge community and beyond, and – where required – a
scholarship.

For the 2022 edition, we are proud to announce that the program will be
implemented in a collaborative manner as Wikimedia Deutschland and
Wikimedia Serbia are joining forces. Besides this cross-regional and
cross-affiliate collaboration, we will also partner with Impact Hub
Belgrade – an organization from the innovation ecosystem [2].

We will direct our geographical focus on the German-speaking as well as on
the Western Balkan region. This means that applications are open to project
teams from the following countries: Germany and Switzerland (Austria tbc),
as well as Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Northern
Macedonia and Serbia. The program language is English in order to enable
exchange and create synergies among the cross-regional project teams. In
April 2022 we will kick-off the application phase for UNLOCK 2022 and will
share more details about it soon.

While Wikimedia Deutschland, Wikimedia Serbia and Impact Hub Belgrade will
jointly lead the implementation of the program, Wikimedia communities in
the Western Balkan region as well as social organizations outside of the
movement will also be involved, which will strengthen the position of
Wikimedia in the knowledge ecosystem and further increase the presence of
Wikimedia in the fields of innovation. We hope to establish a collaboration
from which all involved parties can mutually benefit and empower each
other.

Our work is driven by the Movement Strategy and there are three ways in
which UNLOCK directly contributes to the implementation of it:

   1. UNLOCK provides a support environment for innovations and innovators
to grow, it encourages and invests in people and communities, who are
exploring and building solutions that make knowledge accessible in various
formats or that support diverse modes of consumption and contribution
   (recommendation 9 [3]);
   2. UNLOCK seeks to collaborate with stakeholders from regional social
innovation ecosystems, such as innovation hubs, and integrate their
resources. This will help to diversify and enrich the movement as well as
to strengthen local and regional capacities of Wikimedia communities and
leaders through sharing experiences. Forging partnerships will also provide
learning opportunities for us as a movement, on how to collaborate with
people and institutions that are not from the immediate open knowledge
   movement (recommendation 6 [4]);
   3. UNLOCK should evolve into something that ultimately becomes freely
adaptable, reusable and changeable depending on the geographic, cultural
and economic context. We seek to pilot it in an area with communities that
are still emerging, and/or marginalized – focusing on those who ultimately
should co-create and benefit from innovations. This process of adaptation,
or better, contextualization – a central Movement Strategy principle [5] –
is an area where we as a movement still have much to test and to learn.

We are more than happy to engage in conversations about how to “innovate in
free knowledge” and are eager to hear additional perspectives, insights,
and feedback from across the movement related to the contextualization of
programs like UNLOCK. Please also reach out to me directly to explore ways
to take the conversation forward.

For further questions about UNLOCK 2022, please feel free to directly
contact us – Ivana (Wikimedia Serbia) and Kannika (Wikimedia Deutschland).

[Wikimedia-l] How to innovate in free knowledge: Mapping the movement's innovation capacity

2022-01-26 Thread Kannika Thaimai
Dear Wikimedians,

Today I am excited to share a document [1] with you that I hope will help
initiate the conversation around how to ‘innovate in free knowledge’.

This document directly refers to recommendation 9 “Innovate in Free
Knowledge” [2] of the Movement Strategy that calls for the exploration and
expansion of free knowledge projects. The aim is to stay relevant and to
serve our movement’s vision to give access to the sum of human knowledge.
Building upon this recommendation, our team at Wikimedia Deutschland
outlined different stages of innovation – taking into account the different
structures, people, processes of support that innovators and innovations
might require at each stage in order to grow. The paper maps out how each
innovation stage is or isn’t existent within our movement. And uncovers
what is still clearly lacking: While it is not surprising to see structures
and processes in place to support the development of existing Wikimedia
projects, there are only few support structures and resources to promote
new free knowledge projects that are equally needed for the movement to
evolve, grow and to become sustainable.

The outlined examples are far from exhaustive, so don’t see this as the
final and absolute version of the mapping. This map is one way to raise
awareness and make ‘innovate in free knowledge’ become more relevant in our
movement.

Please have a look, and leave your comments and/or questions on the talk
page. We are more than happy to engage in conversations and eager to hear
additional perspectives, insights, and feedback from across the movement
related to this topic. Please also reach out to me directly to explore ways
to take the conversation forward.

All the best

Kannika

challenge of (re)building trust in the digital age, ranging from a
crowdsourced directory that will help you find every official governmental
online account around the globe, a tool exposing and educating on
technology supply chains, to an open toolkit for language archivists on how
to create permanent, accessible and inclusive audiovisual archives [2].

You are invited to meet and learn from the teams as they showcase their
prototypes on *October 6th, 2021 at 4:00 - 5:30pm CEST*. Join us online
here: wikimedia.de/unlock

*What to expect on UNLOCK Demo Day?* All eyes on the project teams and the
prototypes! The first part will give you the chance to find out what the
participants have achieved in the last few months as well as the ups and
downs they have faced. There will be room and time for exchange and/or
exploring synergies (i.e. maybe the projects are interesting for your
communities, other ideas can be discussed for further development or
adaption of the projects in your particular context, etc.) We’ll conclude
the showcase with a discussion panel "Glimpse into the Future", in which we
will discuss with the teams their next steps and exchange ideas.

We would be more than happy to see you at the Demo Day. If you still have
open questions regarding the Demo Day, head to our blog post for answers
[3] or feel free to contact me. Also, we would appreciate if you could forward
this email and the attached invite to your network.

Looking forward to your participation!

Kannika

[Wikimedia-l] Innovate in Free Knowledge | UNLOCK 2021projects

2021-06-25 Thread Kannika Thaimai
Dear Movement members,

Wikimedia Deutschland (WMDE) launched UNLOCK last year, an acceleration program
which aims to “innovate in free knowledge” by promoting and supporting
teams that are working on free knowledge projects and helps them turn their
idea into a functional prototype [1]. In the context of movement strategy,
WMDE is interested in building the innovative capacity of our movement, and
with UNLOCK we seek to actively contribute to recommendation 9 "Innovate in
Free Knowledge".

The first edition of the program was held in Germany in 2020 and was a
great success [2]. This year, we scaled to Europe. UNLOCK is open to
volunteers from the existing Wikimedia projects, but also to those who are
not yet part of the Wikimedia movement. We are looking for change makers,
activists, technologists and creative minds who are eager to turn their
idea into a concrete prototype or product/service.

UNLOCK 2021 is now ready! 24 project teams from 17 countries (13 of them
from the European region, 4 even from outside Europe) applied and submitted
their ideas for our program focus *Trust in the Digital Age *[3]. 3 project
proposals were submitted by members of Wikimedia project communities. Five
(out of 24) of the teams were selected to participate in our three-month
accelerator program. This is a brief summary of the participating teams and
their approaches (a more detailed description can be found at the UNLOCK
website [4]):

   - FollowTheVote – a mobile app that makes political engagement a fun and
informative habit for young people by combining facts with gamification.
   - Government Online Presence Directory – a crowdsourced and fact-checked
directory of official governmental online accounts and services around the
globe. This project is run by two active members of the Wikidata community
and the directory itself will build on Wikidata.
   - OpenSpeaks Accessibility – an open toolkit for language archivists on
how to create permanent, accessible and inclusive audiovisual archives. One
of the project member is a longterm Wikimedian.
   - Supply-chains.us – an interactive and visual repository of resources,
information, and stories related to technology supply chains.
   - ThinkTwise – open source browser extension that detects and highlights
the quality of arguments in written, digital texts.

The program will kick-off on July 1&2, 2021 and ends by beginning of
October. We are super thrilled to be able to support these promising
projects and help them further develop in the coming months. If you want to
be updated about the development of these projects, please follow us on
Twitter [5] or check out our Blog for regular updates [6].

Best
Kannika
