The Wikimedia Foundation’s Community Resources team and the Northern and
Western Europe (NWE) Committee invite  you to apply to become a committee
member in the Northern and Western Europe (NWE) region. The NWE Committee
supports the Wikimedia Foundation Funds [1] programs' participatory
grantmaking practice. *The deadline for applying is September 4, 2022*.

The NWE Committee reviews grant proposals from affiliates and other
community members within the NWE region who are seeking grant funding from
the Wikimedia Foundation. Committee responsibilities include: providing
thought partnership to help support applicants and strengthen their
strategy and proposals; evaluating and recommending promising proposals for
funding; and helping recruit and spread the word about grants. Orientation
and training is provided for new members.

Serving committee members will have the opportunity to advise on funding
decisions and proactively share recommendations and mentorship to support
grantees in the Northern and Western Europe region in their development,
growth, and sustainability strategies; that contribute to a world in which
every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. You
will also strengthen your capacity in participatory decision-making
processes while learning about our community's incredible work and the
different contexts that influence their work.

[Wikimedia-l] Project Grants open call for proposals in 2021

Hello Wikimedians,

I’m writing to announce the next opportunity for funding through the
Project Grants program, and to share changes in how review will happen in
the coming year and beyond.

Background context:

Over the past few months, the Wikimedia Foundation has begun work on a new
strategy for how we will structure our grants programs in the future, with
the goal of aligning more closely with the Wikimedia Movement’s 2030
Strategic Direction [1]. We’ve been having conversations with many
stakeholders in the Wikimedia community and we’re in the process of
brainstorming about possible frameworks to improve how we make grants. This
coming year, 2021, will be an experimental year in which we will pilot some
smaller changes as we move toward a larger redesign process later in the
year and beyond.

Grants?

What will change in the grant review process for Project Grants in 2021?

   -

   In previous rounds, all Project Grant proposals have been reviewed in
   one round, inclusive of proposals related to four themes: research,
   software, and online and offline community organizing. In 2021, we will
   experiment with offering two separate and dedicated rounds. One will be
   focused on online and offline community organizing.  A second round will
   focus on review of research and software grant proposals.
   -

   By offering separate, dedicated rounds, we hope to offer more tailored
   support for applicants, with better integration with staff in the Wikimedia
   Foundation who have relevant expertise, and with more focused Committee
   recruitment to improve the quality of proposal review. We also hope it will
   reduce the burden on volunteer committee reviewers in any given round.


When will community organizing grant proposals be accepted?

   -

   The open call will launch January 11, and the submission deadline is
   February 10, 2021.

   Our intention is to make sure that current projects will not be
   interrupted by this change, both with regard to current or planned work.


Will there be other changes coming in the future?

   After these rounds, we expect bigger changes for Project Grants.

   We are currently in a strategic design process and have been actively
   engaging many stakeholders from around the world to help us think about
   what these changes should look like.
   -

   Once we have draft frameworks ready, there will be opportunities for
   feedback from Wikimedia community members before any decisions are
   finalized. We will keep you updated!

The open call for the Wikimedia Foundation Project Grants program begins
today, January 21, when we begin public review of new proposals.  The final
deadline is February 20th for all submissions. <

the only open call for Project Grants in the current fiscal year, which
ends on June 30th 2020.


Project Grant funds are available to support individuals, groups and
organizations to implement new experiments and proven ideas, whether
focused on building a new tool or gadget, organizing a better process on
your wiki, researching an important issue, coordinating an editathon series
or providing other support for community building.

[Wikimedia-l] Project Grants program will fund 11 community-led projects

Hi all,

In the latest round of Project Grants, 26 proposals were submitted for
review. The committee has recommended 11 projects for a total of $321,010
in funding. WMF has now approved all 11 grants. Here’s what we’re funding.

Software: seven projects funded

   -

   Nigerian keyboard project
   :
At present, Wikimedian editors working in Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo have to
   cut and paste vowels simply to write sentences in their own languages.
   This project will support new keyboard layout software to improve editing
   experience, allow for searches of Wikipedia articles, and contribute to the
   development of an internet culture in these languages. [2]

   Feature improvements to Wikimedia Programs & Events Dashboard
   
:
The Programs and Events Dashboard is the global Wikimedian community’s
   platform to organize projects like edit-a-thons and education programs,
   tracking all contributions by participants. This grant project will build
   specific new features and improve known shortcomings of the tool.  Among
   other improvements, it will extend access to the Dashboard by enhancing
   usability on mobile devices. [3]

   Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory (WCDO)
   
:
The content of each language edition of Wikipedia is skewed toward the
   cultural and geographic context associated with its own language.  WCDO
   aims to correct this underrepresentation, providing focused data and
   strategic recommendations for cross-language collaboration so that each
   language edition will have a truly international representation of the
   world’s knowledge. [4]

   WikiInAfrica/WikiFundi
   :
Wikifundi expands the Kiwix offline reader experience to include an
   offline editing platform and a suite of training tools that allow educators
   to adopt the Wikipedia in the classroom program in schools without reliable
   internet access.  These improvements greatly expand the territory of this
   important educational initiative which teaches critical skills like
   research, digital and information literacy, and collaboration while
   training a new generation of Wikipedia readers and editors. [5]

   Kiwix/User Experience
   :
Though Kiwix is a widely used tool for bringing Wikimedia projects to
   areas with limited or nonexistent internet access, its desktop version has
   become increasingly buggy as the software has deprecated.  This project
   will revamp the user experience and architecture so that Kiwix can continue
   to serve users around the world for years to come. [6]

   Soweego :
Based out of the University of Trento, the highly trained soweego team
   will create a fully automatic robot that syncs giant volumes of external
   information with Wikidata.  This robot will directly connect Wikidata with
   a variety of large, reliable knowledge databases, so that Wikidata can
   serve as centralized, structured repository of open data. [7]

   LinguaLibre
   :
For the past two years, LinguaLibre has been facilitating recordings of
   pronunciation audio files and encourage contributions in minority languages
   into Wikimedia projects.  This project will extend the impact of this
   successful project by improving user experience and storing rich and
   linguistically useful metadata using the Wikibase software. [8]

   Community toolkit for Greater Diversity
   
:
A team of experienced Wikimedians will develop tailored online and offline
   training modules to equip veteran volunteers to create a more inclusive,
   diverse editing community on Indic language Wikipedias.  The project aims
   to design and develop a community toolkit for recruiting, onboarding and
   retaining editors from underrepresented demographics. [9]

   Les Classes Wikipedia (Wikipedia Classroom)
   
:
This project will continue a successful pilot program in Abidjan, Côte
   d’Ivoire.  Teens and young adults will be trained to create and improve

Recently-recognized affiliate Wikimedians of Peru User Group will organize

   Multimedia Documentation of Traditional Trades and Crafts of Eastern,
   Northern and Up-Country Sri Lanka
   


Through extensive outreach in underrepresented regions in Sri Lanka, this
project plans to expand knowledge of the traditional industries,
agricultural trades, and crafts of Sri Lanka. With integrated support from
the Noolaham Foundation, engagement with local communities through their
livelihoods will be a significant step toward documenting cultural heritage
in Tamil Wikipedia, Commons, Wiktionary, and Wikibooks.[6]

El Colegio de México will lead and coordinate with libraries and academic
institutions in Mexico to develop and disseminate best practices in
knowledge-sharing through Wikimedia projects.[7]

As a follow-up to a previous WMF grant

with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

Wikidata.  Using the UNESCO partnership as a model, they will educate and

   Kiwix/Offline medical
   


Wikimed is a medical encyclopedia app that runs on the offline platform
Kiwix . It
serves as a powerful resource for its users, who are predominantly based in
areas of the Global South with limited connectivity. This project will
update the existing Kiwix code to improve access and content quality,
benefitting both Wikimed and other Wikimedia projects supported by Kiwix.

   Video templates
   Video
   is used by Wikimedians for many reasons, like sharing on social media,
   providing trainings, reporting on successes and more. This project will
   produce templates to enable volunteers to more easily develop
   professional-level videos compatible with our visual identity guidelines
   . The
   templates will be developed for open source software. [4][5]

   GLAMpipe
   GLAMpipe is an
   open source web application that allows GLAM institutions to upload and
   process more complex data sets.  Initially developed in 2016 with support
   from the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, the grant will fund the
   next phase of improvements, focused on adoption by key GLAM-Wiki
   contributors, and extension of the tool to bring data to Wikidata. [6]

   Fountain
   


Running wiki contests involves extensive preparation for organizers and
volunteers, from devising requirements and guidelines, to scoring edits and
determining winning participants. Fountain is a tool that creates and
organizes online contests, and includes the ability to review edited
quality articles. It has already been used on Russian Wikipedia, and was
used by organizers of Asian Wikipedia Month
 in
November 2016!  This grant will expand the tool for multiple-language and
multi-project environments. [7][8]

Offline outreach: seven projects funded

   Offline Wikipedia outreach in Mongolia

   
Progress
   Gateway, an NGO that specializes in building better education in Mongolia,
   will lead a pilot project that will integrate offline Wikipedia into
   classroom curriculum in both urban and rural areas. The project aims to
   build skills in utilizing English Wikipedia, and provide an introduction to
   editing in Mongolian Wikipedia. [9]

   Let’s fill the gender gap through community building

   
This
   project seeks to build on the success of the Let’s fill the gender gap
   workshops
   

   for another year.  Focused on building motivation among new female
   volunteers in the Geneva region, regular meetings will be hosted to
   build personal relationships among participants and a sense of belonging to
   the Wikimedia community as a whole. [10] [11]

   Joburgpedia 2016
   


Wikimedia South Africa, in partnership with South African History Archives,
will be engaging participants in edit-a-thons and in a digitization
initiative as part of Johannesburg-based JoburgpediA
.  Notably, this
project will include documentation of the work of photojournalist and
activist Gille De Vlieg, who photographed life in South Africa’s townships
and shanty towns during the Apartheid era. [12][13]

   Music in Canada @ 150: A Wikipedia and Wikidata Project

   
This
   project aims to fill a gap in content about Canadian music. Through a
   collaboration between music communities, librarians and archivists across
   the country, a series of offline events will strategically encourage new

[Wikimedia-l] Open call for Project Grant proposals (Sep 12-October 11)

Hi everyone,

The Wikimedia Foundation Project Grants program launches its second open
call today, September 12.  We will be accepting proposals through October
11 for new ideas to improve Wikimedia projects.

Funds are available to support individuals, groups and organizations to
implement new experiments and proven ideas, whether focused on building a
new tool or gadget, organizing a better process on your wiki, researching
an important issue, coordinating an editathon series or providing other
support for community-building.

Ideas from the current Inspire Campaign on addressing harassment are very

Do you have have a good idea, but would like some feedback before
applying?  Put it into the IdeaLab, where volunteers and staff can give you
advice and guidance on how to bring it to life. <

it can be easily migrated into a grant request.

Marti Johnson and I will also be hosting weekly proposals clinics via
