So sad to hear :(

It was great to know him since meeting him at Wikimania 2007 and to see him
every year.

As member of the chapters committee, he was supportive of us when we were
establishing Wikimedia DC in 2011.

Will greatly miss him.

Curious if you will be able to attend the hackathon in Jerusalem? and/or
WikiArabia in Amman? (though can understand if you are too busy or for
other reasons can't)

I am quite confident that Katherine will be a good fit for this role.

Her background, prior to joining WMF, is in doing work that is inline
withour values.

Thank you Katherine for stepping into the position.

Lila and Amy,

Curious what you mean by "Technology group" in regards to "overall
architectural roadmap" and strategy? Perhaps this could be made more clear?

For MediaWiki (and general architectural topics), we have the architecture
committee which is comprised of staff and non WMF developers. and/or you
mean the engineering and product managers?

You have done soo much great work in the past years, including
stuff like IdeaLab and supporting the grant programs.

It was alway nice to see you at Wikimania and other events like the

Hope you do indeed stay around as a volunteer :)

It has been a huge help to get some clarification on topics like database

Huge thanks for everything you have done to help grow the chapter and
provide leadership!

I am very impressed and inspired by all the great stuff Wikimedia Sverige
has been doing, including Wikidata-related (e.g. the menu challenge and
visualiztion challenge) and GLAM initatives.

I am sure the chapter will do just fine with new leadership, and would be
great to have you back as a community person. :)

(PS. and was cool to visit on Monday and see the office. even more
impressed now and appreciate being welcomed there)

Thank you for all you have done to help with managing the finances of WMF.
Also, huge thanks for you support for Wikimania 2012 organizing team and

I am sure detailed reporting will come, but please give the organizers some
time.

Just some observations...

There were just a handful of WMF staff there, and no chapter employees
(afaik, except myself who did not attend in that capacity).

number of employees being paid to support the conference is zero, unless
you want to count the venue staff for security, etc.

Please note that the venue was donated at no cost to Wikimedia, and there
were a number of other sponsors who sponsored the evening reception at the
conference.

details:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:WM_US-NYC/WikiConference_USA_2014#Budget_and_resources

about the gender diversity, it's just a guesstimate but i'd say ~35-40%
women in attendance. (i think conference reporting will provide more stats)

Katie

Chapters undertaking technology work is definitely a good thing!

I can say personally, unofficially (as member of the wikidata team) that I
am definitely happier working in Berlin (with lower salary, that goes
pretty far), versus SF. I am not convinced I could afford same lifestyle in
SF on salary offered by WMF.

Could one afford to live on their own in a 1b apartment in SOMA on WMF
salary, which has median cost of $3,475 [1] a month? Or would I need have
flatmate or need to commute from farther away?

The rule of thumb is that one should not spend more than 30% of their
income (after tax!), and ideally smaller percentage than that. That
requires $11,500 (after tax) salary, per month.

I can very easily live on my own in the best parts of Berlin, near the WMDE
office, or whatever I want. Just sayin' :)

I understand that lots of people like to live in SF anyway, even with
whatever sacrifices they must make to afford it. And good that WMF offers
the remote work option.

Anyone know if this is happening or not? Sometime around the chapters
meeting seems as good a time as any. Or maybe attached as a few days
before/after the Amsterdam hackathon.

(/me not organizing anything, though)

I think there will be little overlap between attendees of the chapters
meeting and this, whereas I think there's a bit of overlap with the
hackathon. Problem is I am not aware of anyone willing to organize
anything around the hackathon.

Advantage of what Christian proposes is that someone is willing to host and
help organize it. :)

The longer time goes by without picking a date, the more likely people like
me can't come as something else will come up and then they are busy.

Hey :)

Just a quick reminder that this is today and tomorrow. Hope to see
many of you there.

Heya folks,

It's time we figure out what the Main Page of Wikidata should look
like. It'd be great if you helped out with this. I've started a page
on Meta here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Main_Page_draft
We'll copy the content of that page to Wikidata once it's live.
Go crazy and make it useful and pretty ;-)

Cheers

Just a small point

I'm curious how the proposed $255,000 for Wikimania travel for staff,
board, advisory board and volunteers compares with what was actually spent
this year?

In the 2011-2012 plan, I see that $96,000 was proposed. While the travel
costs for SF staff to DC are much less, I find this too low and hard to
believe. Some more details and breakdown by scholarships vs.
staff/board/advisory board would be nice.

I'm curious if we are planning a higher number of scholarships for
volunteers for next year? (as the overall WMF budget increases) and how
many staff are we planning to send next year?

Cheers,
Katie

There also are infoboxes and categories that people use to indicate where
they live.

It could also be a preference, to make it private info. (and would be nice
to get geonotices for "home" even while I am traveling, or if I use a proxy
or something)

Katie

Yes, I think it's invasive and Wikipedians can be quite sensitive about
privacy. (even if it's all in the browser, with JavaScript, etc.) It may
not be the case everywhere, but the IP based geolocation is good enough for
purposes of geonotices.

Right now, we pretty much opt everyone into the geonotices, though each can
be dismissed or people can turn them off with css / js. I think people
would freak out about the more precise geolocation and more would opt out.

(e.g. whatever happened with Twitter's geolocation? as far as I see,
people don't use it much)

Not worth it. Not enough benefit over the current approach.

Yes. Obviously the UI for the geonotice tool can use improvement, and
would be nice to see more geolocation functionality in CentralNotice.
