[Wikimedia-l] AfroCreatives WikiProject: Back and better/De retour et mieux

2024-04-22 Thread Ceslause Ogbonnaya
Fellow Wikimedians,

I hope this meets you well.

After a quiet period since the 2022 launch of AfroCreatives WikiProject
(ACWP), The Africa Narrative (TAN) is gearing up for a busy 2024 with the
roll-out of a series of initiatives as well as a robust buildout of the
ACWP activities. First up on the calendar of 2024 Edit-a-thons
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/AfroCreatives_WikiProject/Afro_Creatives_WikiProject_%2Bfilm>
is a pan-African campaign in partnership with The Panafrican Film and
Television Festival of Ouagadougou
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panafrican_Film_and_Television_Festival_of_Ouagadougou>
(French: Festival panafricain du cinéma et de la télévision de Ouagadougou,
FESPACO), the continent’s largest film festival, and the African Federation
of Film Critics
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Federation_of_Film_Critics> (AFFC,
French: Fédération africaine de la critique cinématographique, FACC), a
panafricanist federation of African and diaspora film critics.

These partnerships are aimed at mobilizing African film and television
industry stakeholders to learn how the Wikimedia space works and how they
can help bridge the content gap that exists on the digital space about
African film and television through Wikimedia projects. Industry
stakeholders include the gamut of creatives and professionals—actors,
screenwriters,cinematographers,directors,producers, executives, film
critics, among many others—who can bring their industry knowledge to
improving Wikipedia articles.

In addition, given the vital role of images in enhancing Wikipedia, ACWP+
*film*
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/AfroCreatives_WikiProject/Afro_Creatives_WikiProject_%2Bfilm>
is
launching a special effort timed to the FESPACO edit-a-thon to encourage
industry figures to contribute images such as posters, film stills,
behind-the-scenes, film festivals, awards, etc) to Wikimedia Commons. An
early test effort made to some award-winning African filmmakers in 2022
reflected strong support and ACWP expects the launch of this concerted
effort to bring notable additions to African film and television imagery.

All these contributions helpfully complement the work of the African
Wikimedia communities who are contributing in the same or adjoining space.

One of the ideas birthed in 2022 on the heels of the first ACWP+*film*
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/AfroCreatives_WikiProject/Afro_Creatives_WikiProject_%2Bfilm>
campaign, was the creation of African film and television portals,
thoughtfully curated and tailored for English
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:African_cinema>, French
<https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portail:Film_et_T%C3%A9l%C3%A9vision_Africains>
and Arabic
<https://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%A8%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A9:%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%8A%D9%86%D9%85%D8%A7_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A5%D9%81%D8%B1%D9%8A%D9%82%D9%8A%D8%A9>
Wikipedia.

The goals are broadly two-fold:

   1. To generate greater visibility and awareness for African film and
   television among a global audience as well as further engagement on
   Wikipedia, and
   2. To generate further enthusiasm, pride, and ultimately, more
   engagement among the African community contributors in the area of African
   film.

The Content on these portals is manually curated twice a month.

The Portals were launched on the *18th of April 2024*, with manually
curated content posted every two weeks.

The 2024 ACWP+*film*
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/AfroCreatives_WikiProject/Afro_Creatives_WikiProject_%2Bfilm>
campaign will officially launch on *18th May 2024* and run through *1st
June 2024*. However, the series of film specific training sessions on
Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons will start on *3rd May*.

In addition to general editing guidelines, the training modules include
film-and-television specific insights on how to document film on Wikipedia
with important elements that are frequently lacking. These include film and
television specific infoboxes, filmography tables, linking to external film
databases, how to document film subjects on Wikidata, among others.

All of this points to what we expect to be an immensely productive and
rewarding campaign. So, sit back, relax, and look out for the
communications about the campaign launch in due time!

Regards,
Ceslause Ogbonnaya

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Loves Africa 2021-WPWP campaign prize categories

2021-07-21 Thread ceslause
Hello everyone!

We are glad to inform you about the Wiki Loves Africa 2021-WPWP campaign
prize categories.

Every year, thousands of images are uploaded to Wikimedia Commons
database as part of the
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa Wiki Loves
Africa photo contest.

Most of these images end up on...let's say English Wikipedia, but we
believe it would be great to use these same images in the equivalent
articles in different languages!

So this year, we invite you to take some time to use Wiki Loves Africa
images to illustrate Wikipedia articles in various languages. And there
are prizes for the most involved!

1st prize - US $100 gift card

1st to 3rd prizes - WLA souvenirs (if the post office is more efficient
than it has been in the recent 18 months...)

All Wiki Loves Africa years are eligible (All pictures are available
here
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wiki_Loves_Africa_All_Images)...
BUT the first prize will consider edits made to any language except
English and French.

To be eligible:

* you must add #WLA as a hashtag to your edit (as well as #WPWP)
* you must have registered your account before January 2021
* you must have made at least 300 mainspace edits to any language
Wikipedia before 1st June 2021.

To get more information and also see suggested images for improving
various language wikis, please click
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Africa_2021/WPWP

Ensure the WPWP campaign guidelines are followed too

[Wikimedia-l] Invitation to participate in Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2021

2021-05-11 Thread ceslause
Hello everyone

We are inviting the Wikimedia Community User Groups and chapters to
participate in Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2021, a global contest
scheduled to run from July 1st through August 31, 2021:

Participants will choose among Wikipedia pages without photo images, and
then add a suitable file from among the many thousands of photos in the
Wikimedia Commons, especially those uploaded from thematic contests
(Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc.) over
the years.

In its first year (2020), 36 Wikimedia communities in 27 countries
joined the campaign. Events relating to the campaign included training
organized by at least 18 Wikimedia communities in 14 countries.

The campaign resulted in the addition of media files (photos, audios and
videos) to more than 90,000 Wikipedia articles in 272 languages.

Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) offers an ideal task for
recruiting and guiding new editors through the steps of adding content
to existing pages. Besides individual participation, the WPWP campaign
can be used by user groups and chapters to organize editing workshops
and edit-a-thons.

The organizing team is looking for a contact person to coordinate WPWP
participation at the Wikimedia user group or chapter level
(geographically or thematically) or for a language WP. We'd be glad for
you to reply to this email, or sign up directly at WPWP Participating
Communities.

You can access the WPWP 2021 main page via
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Pages_Wanting_Photos_2021

Thank you,

Ceslause Ogbonnaya (User: Ceslause / ceslaus...@gmail.com)

Regional Ambassador, Francophone Communities
