[Wikimedia-l] Fundraising testing

2020-07-05 Thread Joseph Seddon
Hey all,

Just a heads up. Through the summer the WMF fundraising team will be
running system and content tests in preparation for the end of year
fundraiser on the English Wikipedia.

The first test is scheduled for 1500 UTC Wednesday 8 July.

* If you need to report a bug or technical issue, please create a
phabricator ticket:
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/edit/form/1/?template=118862
.
* If you see a donor on a talk page, OTRS or social media having
difficulties in donating or reporting any issues, please refer them to
''donate at wikimedia.org''.
* Here is also the ever present fundraising IRC channel to raise urgent
technical issues: #wikimedia-fundraising

[Wikimedia-l] Fundraising Testing - High Traffic Experiment #2 - 4th July (USA)

2016-06-21 Thread Joseph Seddon
Wikimedia-l!

Last month you'll remember I told you about an experiment where we used
related banner content for fundraising, an idea suggest by User:Wittylama
[1], and in that case taking the pop culture line with Game of Thrones. [2]

Unfortunately the content specific large banner saw a drop in performance
of 30% compared with the control. This adds to the additional downside in
which generating content specific banners is more intensive than the more
generic banners we use and when targeting a much much smaller audience
(>0.5% of traffic in the US), as you'd expect it results in an added lower
relative return for the resources put in.

There is still potentially merit in the idea so we're running a second
experiment, focused around the upcoming 4th July celebrations in the United
State and playing on the themes of independence. Advantages with this sort
of topic is we can test in a more free way without fear of potential
appearance of advertising or overt endorsement (Unless you happen to be the
United Kingdom in the middle of their own cessation debate).

We are going for a bolder take than our previous attempt which gives a very
different feel to the banners, I would like to think more celebratory (even
if I am myself a Brit). Here are a couple of the ideas we are working with
(please be aware these banners are desktop specific):
* Fireworks -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Day_%28United_States%29?force=1&country=US&banner=dsk_p1_lg_template_july4fireworks01_mod
* US Flags -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Day_%28United_States%29?force=1&country=US&banner=dsk_p1_lg_template_july4flag03_mod

These *won't *be appearing across the website and will *only* be showing on
on pages specific relating to the 4th July holiday and the American
Deceleration of Independence [3] and *only* in the United States. All the
images being tested were all sourced from Commons and are attributed within
the banners. We expect these banners to be going up from the 30th June -
4th July over the holiday weekend.

Again, if you have any ideas you would like to suggest about either our
process or banner ideas feel free to contribute on our fundraising ideas
page. [4]

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fundraising Testing Update (Friday 6th May) - Hopefully the first of Many

2016-05-10 Thread Ilario Valdelli
Hi Joseph,
I think that the banner could be useful to test some problems I see when
there is a switch of context.

I live near the border Italy-Switzerland and I see several discrepancies
when I connect in Italy and in Switzerland.

Basically I continue to see banners of Switzerland when I connect in Italy
and viceversa.

Probably there is something connected with the cookies or with a
persistence of personal data of browsing.

In my opinion this experiment can be a good test to check if this problem
is persistent switching the content.

In addition my question is about the implementation of this kind of banner
because the centralnotice can be set per country, per project and per
language. Do this banner add also the possibility to set it by content?

Kind regards

In Brazil 3 dollars is the price of a Starbucks coffee. But Starbuck is the
most expensive coffee we have (except of course for the gourmet coffee, but
who drinks that? :D )

Other than that, I kinda of like that banner :D

1. I can't see the banner (not using the link posted or going by

2016-05-09 Thread Joseph Seddon
Hey Pine.

So in this instance we sought advice from both Legal and Communications
about some of the ideas that we were proposing and from their feedback we
took the banner in the more conservative direction to give us clear ground
between us and any potential intellectual property issues however remote.
We tried to keep the references more generic so that it related to very
broad themes that are not series specific. If we can find success in doing
as we have done with this banner then I think that would be a more ideal
situation for both fundraising and the movement.

I think we should be cautious about taking any road whereby trademark
licenses being a common thing for fundraising. Firstly, the time and
effort we would need to put in for that would quite prohibitive. Secondly I
think it starts us wading into a very murky area whereby it may seem like
we are actively promoting commercial interests etc. Any move on this would
need great care.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fundraising Testing Update (Friday 6th May) - Hopefully the first of Many

2016-05-09 Thread Liam Wyatt
Thanks for the mention Seddon & Anna,
tl;dr version: This is a test to see if readers are more likely to donate
if the banner is more relevant to what they're reading. Thanks for testing
this community-suggested fundraising idea - sign of a new era regardless of
the results of the test!

As some may recall, in July last year a "fundraising ideas" page was
created by WMF fundraising to be able to give practical suggestions/ideas
for improvement:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising/2015-16_Fundraising_ideas

I have been vocally about Fundraising's practices and adherence to the
'fundraising principles', so, when a request for specific suggestions was
made, it seemed only fair that I should try to submit productive ideas not
just critiques! :-) After all - whether we love them or hate them, the
fundraising banners are the single most important revenue-raising tool we
have and it is no secret that it is becoming increasingly difficult to
reach the donation targets [for a variety of reasons].

One of these suggestions on that page was "related content banners" and I'm
super-happy that WMF-Fundraising have taken the time to test the concept.
Not just because I hope the idea is successful, but also because it
indicates in a very practical way that they're trying to build a new era of
more collaborative practices. So, even if the test doesn't result in
anything useful, I'd like to say "thanks!" for giving a community-made
suggestion a go.

Wikimedia fundraising banners have always been about trying to optimise for
the most efficient design/text to be used across a whole language edition.
We have targeted by country, and by language, and that's it. Most of the
other kinds of personal-targeting that online advertising does is not
available to us because of our principles and policies (privacy,
cookies...). However, what we have never tried to do before is to target
the banners based on the vast array of areas-of-interest that people come
to read about. If someone is reading an article a sport, a chemical
element, a tv-show, a historic battle, etc. then we can assume they
are *interested
*in that topic. Furthermore, we have systems like Categories and thematic
'wikiprojects' to group these topics (as well as, in this test case, simple
manual selection) so we should leverage that!

The hypothesis that this banner-test is investigating is:
Are Wikipedia readers are more likely to click on the donation banner (and
actually donate) if the message that is displayed is more relevant to the
article-topic where it appeared?

As some people have asked already, this does have some potential
trademark-infringement questions when it is associated to an article about
a commercial product (which is why the legal department was indeed
definitely consulted for this test case). But, the targeting doesn't need
to be for that kind of thing. It could equally be, for example:
- a profile of a prolific Wikipedia feature article writer of articles
about Plants displayed above articles in category:botany.
- A winning picture from WikiLovesEarth or WikiLovesMonuments), used in
articles about places located in that country.
- A personal message by a nobel-prize winning chemist, appearing above
articles in category:chemistry.
- an 'easter egg' banner (somewhat like this Game of Thrones test) where
the text is a reference to that specific subject. I can imagine we could do
that with articles about Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy?)
- A/B test the effectiveness of 'normal' banners based on the kind of
article they appear on e.g. maybe text-centric banners are more effective
on science-related articles, and image-centric banners are more effective
on biographies? Who knows...
[There would need to be many practical things worked out: avoiding
situations equivalent of when the 'Jimmy banner' appeared above the article
on Scopophobia (fear of being stared at)!]

An obvious downside to this concept is that the more targeted the banners
become, the fewer people who see them. Therefore the cost benefit of making
them becomes worse. Put another way - it's more financially useful to
improve the 'global' banner by 1% than it is to improve a very-targeted
banner by 30%. However, If the main hypothesis proves true, it could be an
excellent way for the global community to suggest culturally-appropriate
and interesting/clever banner suggestions, and also a way to re-ignite the
general public's interest in actually *reading *the banners. Imagine,
instead of making the banners more desperate/aggressive each year (which
makes the audience increasingly immune to them - known as 'banner
fatigue'), we made them *interesting to read*!

Sincerely,
-Liam / Wittylama

Great messaging, btw! I had a good laugh reading the banner headline.
Curious to hear about your experience.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fundraising Testing Update (Friday 6th May) - Hopefully the first of Many

2016-05-08 Thread Pine W
Niel, I saw, but the fact that WMF is targeting specific articles about
proprietary-IP-heavy subjects with a plea for revenue that is closely
aligned to the proprietary IP makes me wonder if there is enough of a nexus
that a trademark license is required. WMF is trying to leverage proprietary
IP for its own revenue. That seems like it's worth some careful legal
thought. Perhaps it's ok, but I would like to hear that from a WMF attorney.

Thanks,

Joseph linked to the banner that Fundraising will be testing in his

directly to Game of Thrones at all.

[Wikimedia-l] Fundraising Testing Update (Friday 6th May) - Hopefully the first of Many

2016-05-06 Thread Joseph Seddon
Greetings all,

I wanted to give you a heads up about a small test WMF Online Fundraising
will be running over this weekend. Following a suggestion from
User:Wittylama we are for the first time going to be testing fundraiser
banners that are content specific. [1]

From now until Monday 9th May we will be running an A/B test strictly on
articles relating to Game of Thrones [2] and only within the United States.
The reason being its huge popular appeal and expected spikes of traffic to
related articles during the airing of the next episode this Sunday . This
is the first test of its kind so we are being reasonable in our
expectations. It's hoped that this sort of specific messaging will allow us
to engage with our readership a little better through our fundraising and
in time provide alternatives to our standard messaging.

The banner we are testing [3] has gone through several iterations and we
are trying to strike that fine line between engaging with our readers by
being content specific but at the same time avoiding being seen as
advertising or overt endorsement. There were certainly some more
extravagant ideas but we have gone with the more conservative option for
now.

If you have any ideas you would like to suggest about either our process or
banner ideas feel free to contribute on our fundraising ideas page. [4]

It is my plan going forward to provide more regular updates about our
testing and the results we find from it. What form that takes and where I
post those I'll decide in the coming weeks and will update you then.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fundraising testing

2013-02-28 Thread Charles Andrès
copy from the meta page:

The result of the Fundraising team and all the people involved has lead to an
impressing abilities to minimize the time of display of the banners, and then
decreasing the perturbation for the reader. I personally think that we reach an
acceptable level of "perturbation" and that we should move from a strategy of
"less perturbation for the reader" to "motivation of the reader". We will get
back as soon as possible with numbers, but during the fundraising periods in
general, and especially during the last one, we notice in switzerland a
significant increase of the interest of the readers about how Wikipedia works,
and the project of our chapter. During the last fundraising, we have been
contacted by people wanting to join our chapter or becoming editors. In this
period where renewing the pool of editor is a major challenge, I think we
should not underestimate the power of the fundraising campaign. One simple way
to use this synergy would be to redirect the donors (after their donation) to a
thank you page that could incorporate a link to the corresponding chapter's
page, or a thematic group's page, or an announce for a meet up, etc... the list
is open.

Thanks

It hasn't been deleted; it's just broken and we haven't had time to fix it.
If you'd like I can provide a dump of the aggregated data that went into
creating it. Ideally we would be providing the data via Limn, but that
hasn't happened yet due to where the data lives.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fundraising testing

2013-02-27 Thread Megan Hernandez
Hi all,

We have another update on fundraising testing. We have been testing at low
levels for almost three weeks. We are preparing to increase the percentage
for a 24-hour test so all anonymous readers in the countries and languages
where we are running campaigns will see a banner (just 1 banner
impression). If a reader has already seen one banner over the past three
weeks of testing, they should not see another banner during the 24-hour
test. The test is set to start at 18:00 UTC on Wednesday, February 27 and
will run worldwide, excluding the countries where banners already ran in
December 2012 (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France,
Switzerland).

Again, hiding banners from readers who have already seen a banner is new
for us and our goal is to minimize the number of banners our users see. If
you read Wikipedia anonymously and see more than one banner, please let us
know on the fundraising meta talk page:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Fundraising_2013

We are also testing out new translations and donation pages in many many
countries, so if you see any errors or have any feedback, it'd really help
us out if you'd send it to us:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Fundraising_2013

Thanks everyone,

Megan

Looks good. :-) https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2013 (the
noticeboard itself) also looks like it'll be useful for providing status
updates, etc. Wikimedians are always curious about banners, particularly
outside November and December.

From the subject-space page, I saw this:

* "or send in your own story: wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Stories/en
"

I didn't realize this form was still up. I'm curious how many e-mails it
gets/how it's been working for you all. Do people submit interesting
stories? I assume it's funneled through OTRS or something, but I'm not
actually sure.

2013-02-20 Thread Megan Hernandez
Hi everyone,

We've been testing banners at a low level for about two weeks now. We've
been showing just one banner impression to 5% of anonymous users (excluding
the 5 countries where banners ran in December: US, UK, Canada, Australia,
and New Zealand).

Hiding banners after one impression is new for us, and any feedback we can
get on how it's working will really help us. We are trying to minimize the
number of banners our users see each year.

If you visit Wikipedia anonymously (and you're outside of the 5 English
countries), have you seen any fundraising banners in the last two weeks?
If so, how many times have you seen a banner?

Thanks for your help!

[Wikimedia-l] Fundraising testing

2013-02-06 Thread Megan Hernandez
Hi all,

We wanted to let you know the fundraising team is starting up testing in
February. We're starting at low levels, so most people will not even
notice banners to start with. 5% of anonymous users will see a banner just
one time. We are not showing any banners to logged in users.

There was an announcement in November about us splitting up the fundraiser
this year. Just a very quick recap: We ran the end-of-year campaign in
November and December in the top 5 English-speaking countries (US, UK,
Canada, Australia, and New Zealand). The campaign was successful and we
were able to take the banners down a few weeks ahead of schedule:

We are now working on starting up testing in countries that were not
included in the end-of-year campaign. We'll be working on translations and
optimizing our donation pages in many countries over the coming months.

We will post a report of the year-end campaign with much more detailed
information and will send a note to this mailing list when it's available.

We always need help making improvements in different countries and
languages. If you have any suggestions, please do leave us a note on the
fundraising meta discussion page:

Thanks!

Megan
