[Wikimedia-l] Movement Strategy update

2021-04-02 Thread Maggie Dennis
Hello, all. :)

I’m Maggie Dennis ,
Vice President of Community Resilience & Sustainability
,
a division of the Legal Department at the Wikimedia Foundation. I oversee
the functions of Community Development, Trust & Safety Policy, Trust &
Safety Operations, Human Rights protection, and, now, Movement Strategy.[1]

That last point is the purpose of my outreach. Many of you are aware that
our Chief of Staff, Ryan Merkley, has recently chosen to depart the
Foundation. Movement Strategy was housed with him. A long time Wikimedian
myself - user Moonriddengirl; pretty dormant right now but still very
interested! - I am delighted to step in to do all I can to keep the
momentum of this critical work going and to support however I can the
movement and the Foundation in meeting these strategic goals. Kaarel Vaidla
, with whom many of you
have connected during this process, will be part of my division, reporting
to Quim Gil .

The transition phase was wrapped up

last quarter, and it is time to start the implementation phase, looking at
which projects can move forward first.[2] Among these, the Movement Charter

is an essential tool for the implementation of the Strategy 2030, and it is
important to begin its draft.[3] There is also a lot of curiosity
around regional
and thematic hubs
,
and also many questions, and we are ready to support resolving some of
these.[4]

It has been my goal to do quarterly community meetings, but because of this
and other transitions, I’m a little behind. I had hoped to be able today to
invite you to meet me on Saturday, April 17, and I may be able to do that
in just a few days! If not that week, soon thereafter. There are some
details still being worked out. In that meeting, I will be available to
talk about all matters related to the work of Community Resilience &
Sustainability - which includes Movement Strategy and the Universal Code of
Conduct, among others. You can send your questions now (in any language) to
answ...@wikimedia.org. Please use the term “CR” in the subject line so
that it is identified as a question for me. :) We will be inviting people
to join the meeting via multiple platforms to ask “live” as well. After the
event, we will release a video recording and a written summary of the
meeting. You can find details of our office hours past, including links to
videos and summaries, at the bottom of our Meta page
.[1
again!]

I’m very excited about all the implementation work ahead of us! :)

Warm regards,

Maggie

[Wikimedia-l] Movement Strategy update - Summaries from January and February conversations

2021-02-19 Thread Kaarel Vaidla
Hi everyone,

The movement strategy transition team is happy to share summaries from
follow-up discussions that took place in January and February.

The aim of the discussions was to come up with objectives for implementing
each initiative or cluster of initiatives that communities had previously
prioritized. The needed steps as well as challenges and anticipated
resources were also discussed to varying degrees.

We kindly ask you to review the summaries
[1]
by March 15, particularly for initiatives that are a priority for you and
your community, and to help finalize the draft plan. This is also where we
invite you to indicate your interest to be part of working groups that will
be convened for each initiative to take the work forward. More information
below.

Quick recap

In November

[2] and December

[3], the Movement Strategy team hosted global conversations to identify
priority areas for collaboration in 2021. Distributed governance, resources
for underrepresented communities, improved user experience, addressing
content gaps, and facilitating skill development in the movement were among
the top priorities.

Our promise had been to host at least one follow-up discussion for each
initiative. Thanks to your participation and support from community members
and affiliates from around the world, this was successfully achieved.151
people participated in large discussions for the Interim Global Council and
90 for hubs. An average of 60 people participated in each of the other
follow-up discussions that took place from January 22 to February 7.

Commitment to equity in decision-making

Distributed leadership, global governance, and inclusive decision-making
were key threads in the movement strategy recommendations. This has been
reiterated in local and global discussions since and the Wikimedia
Foundation is committed to supporting the realization of this vision and
the establishment of a Global Council - by the way of an interim council
that will draft the Movement Charter. The exact structure and set up of
this Interim Global Council will continue to be shaped by communities in
virtual and on-wiki discussions

.[4]

Next steps

Until March 15, we invite community members, affiliates, and strategy
enthusiasts from the whole movement to help finalize the first ever
implementation plan for movement strategy:

   -

How can the stated objectives become realistic and inclusive steps for
   implementation?
   -

   Did the discussions miss anything?

You can continue to indicate on meta, under respective initiative sub-pages

[5], if you would like to take part in the next steps of developing the
initiatives and in their implementation. In upcoming months we are planning
to convene working groups with contributing community, affiliate, and
Wikimedia Foundation staff members to be tasked with scoping their
respective initiative and taking the work forward. We will keep everyone
who has indicated their interest on meta in loop and will share more
specific information regarding ways to participate in our future updates.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Support Team with your questions,
comments, or ideas at strategy2030{{at}}wikimedia.org

On behalf of the Support Team,

Kaarel

[Wikimedia-l] Movement Strategy Update: Draft outline of Transition events

2020-08-13 Thread Rupika Sharma
Hello everyone,

Hope everyone is safe and sound in the light of the ongoing Pandemic. I
would like to share an update regarding the progress of the Movement
Strategy and the design of the transition events.

The Transition Design Group [1] has been meeting over the past month to
discuss the design of the virtual events that will aim to facilitate
the inclusive
Transition process for the movement to start implementing the Movement
Strategy recommendations [2]. The Design Group discussions have been largely
centred around people and their ease of participation, processes for the
Transition events, and the legitimacy of the process, needed resources, and
communications [3]. Transition will be a turning point for our movement to
create a 18-month collaborative implementation work plan that will empower
our community and affiliates.

The virtual Transition events are being planned from the month of September
to December, 2020. We invite your feedback on the draft outline for the
transition events to ensure the events can be as inclusive, participative,
and engaging as possible [4]. The draft outline offers both light and
detailed information regarding the events. The Transition events aim to be
easy to join only once or for multiple events. They are for everyone,
whether a newcomer or a seasoned strategy enthusiast. They are being
designed for diverse participation across time zones and regions in order
to create a movement-wide implementation plan. The review period for the
draft outline is till August 20. After receiving your feedback, the Design
Group will finalize the plan and the Wikimedia Foundation will ensure the
delivery of the events according to the design.

Please comment on the Meta talk page [4] and feel free to use the questions
below as an orientation:

   1. How can the plan be improved? In your opinion, what are some barriers
to entry that must be lowered so everyone can take part in Transition?
   2. How can we make sure that you and your community have what you need
to participate in the Transition events?
   3. If you have attended other virtual events, what has your experience
been like and what lessons can be applied in this case?

You are also encouraged to share your individual feedback directly via
email strategy2...@wikimedia.org for any suggestions or ideas.

On behalf of the Design Team,
Rupika

[Wikimedia-l] Movement Strategy Update #3: WMCON and Core Team news

2018-04-18 Thread Katherine Maher
Dear all,

Greetings from Berlin! This is another update on the movement strategy
process, this week coming from Wikimedia Conference. I’ve already had the
chance to see so many old friends, and am looking forward to meeting with
many more of you in person. The movement strategy track of the conference
is an important milestone in the strategy process overall -- it provides an
excellent opportunity to engage diverse voices from affiliates representing
many of our communities from around the world.

During the strategy track we will look at the possibilities for envisioning
our future against the strategic direction, and challenges we may face in
making progress. We will discuss our ways forward, with the goal of forming
a more concrete 3-5 year perspective, getting us further toward 2030.
During these discussions we will map out thematic areas that need our
attention, and where we need to take action and make changes, if we are to
fully address our challenges and seize our opportunities.

At the same time, we know that only a fraction of our diverse global
movement will be present at the Wikimedia Conference. Therefore, the
conference is only a starting point. The process following the conference
will be designed to include different perspectives and voices, and we hope
that you feel encouraged to participate in ongoing discussions on wiki, at
Wikimania, and at regional or thematic events.

As I mentioned in my last email, all these discussions will be supported by
the Core Strategy Team. As I also mentioned, we’ve made some progress in
building that team! I am happy to announce that we have filled some of the
important roles:

*Strategy Process Architect *- Responsible for framing, designing and
maintaining the process in consultation with the international Wikimedia
community. *I’m thrilled to announce that Kaarel Vaidla, former Executive
Director of Wikimedia Eesti, has agreed to fill this role.* Kaarel has been
involved with our movement in various ways over the years, and has proven
his strategic abilities through his contributions to Phase 1 in various
volunteer roles.

*Strategy Process Support Lead* - An external partner to the Process Lead
and Process Architect. This person will participate in process design and
will help us find experience from outside Wikimedia when needed. *I’m
delighted to announce that Bhavesh Patel has agreed to fill this role. *Bhav
is a “conversational architect” who works with many different movement
organizations around the globe. You may know Bhav his outstanding
facilitation at WMCON 2017 and Wikimania Montreal. We’re fortunate to have
him back with us.

We have also appointed a *Project Assistant*, *Anne Kierkegaard*, to help
the core team to manage the administrative side of the process. Anne
currently works with WMDE and will be supporting Nicole directly in her
capacity as process lead. We've also recruited our *Thought and Process
Facilitator*, *Anna Lena Schiller*. Anna Lena will support the Process Lead
in shaping a high-performing team and be responsible for designing and
supporting facilitation at meetings and events throughout the strategy
process. Many of you may know Anna Lena as one of the wonderful
facilitators of WMCON between 2011 and 2016. *I am so happy both Anne and
Anna Lena have agreed to join the team!*

I would also like to remind you that there is still an open call for
applications for the positions of the *Information & Knowledge Manager* and
the *Project Manager* in the strategy team. We’re getting great
applications, and I continue to encourage people from across the movement
to apply!

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Wikimedia Conference -- and
many more of you in meetings and events to come. Thank you for your ongoing
engagement in the strategy process!

Tschüssi,
Katherine
