Kelly Battles and Arnnon Geshuri join Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees

New Trustees bring deep financial, operational, and organizational
development expertise to Wikimedia’s free knowledge mission

San Francisco -- January 5, 2016 -- Today the Wikimedia Foundation
announced two new members to its Board of Trustees
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Board_of_Trustees>: Kelly Battles
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Board_of_Trustees#Kelly_Battles>
and Arnnon
Geshuri
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Board_of_Trustees#Arnnon_Geshuri>.
The new Trustees bring deep expertise in strategy and financial oversight,
and diversity and organizational development, as well as a commitment to
advancing Wikimedia’s vision of free knowledge for the world.

“We considered dozens of candidates from all over the world, with
not-for-profit and technology experience, and the highest professional
standards.” said Dariusz Jemielniak, Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation
Board Governance Committee and Board Trustee. “Kelly's finance and auditing
skills will be essential to the Board’s oversight and budgeting
responsibilities. Arnnon's expertise in talent development and cultural
diversity will be indispensable for the development of the Wikimedia
Foundation, and communications and transparency within the Wikimedia
movement. We look forward to partnering with them.”

A veteran financial executive, Kelly brings more than 25 years of
experience in financial management and administrative oversight for leading
technology companies and non-profit organizations. She currently serves as
Chief Financial Officer of Bracket Computing <https://brkt.com/>, a cloud
virtualization company in Mountain View, California. Her earlier roles
included Chief Financial Officer at Host Analytics, Vice President of
Finance at IronPort, and Director of Strategy and Corporate Development at
Hewlett Packard.

“As a non-profit supporting one of the most popular websites in the world,
the Wikimedia Foundation has a unique responsibility to practice
transparent, effective stewardship of donor resources,” said Kelly. “I am
excited to lend my financial and strategic experience to an organization
dedicated to making knowledge more freely available to the world.”

Arnnon brings more than 20 years of experience in developing strong
organizational cultures with diverse, passionate employees. He is currently
the VP of Human Resources at Tesla Motors, where he shepherds Tesla’s
unique culture and oversees all global people operations, analytics, and
staffing. Before joining Tesla, Arnnon served as Senior Director of HR and
Staffing at Google, where he built the company’s talent acquisition and
diversity strategy, growing the organization to more than 20,000 people in
five years. Earlier in his career, Arnnon served as Vice President of
People Operations and Director of Global Staffing at E*TRADE Financial.

“I have always believed in the power of open, transparent knowledge.
Wikipedia represents some of the best aspects of our changing world: deeper
knowledge, collaboration, and, ultimately, understanding,” said Arnnon.
“This opportunity is a true privilege for me and I am thrilled to help
support this powerful mission.”

“Kelly and Arnnon bring a special combination of expertise, integrity, and
love for our mission. From Arnnon’s people and culture expertise to Kelly’s
strong financial management background, both members bring valuable skills
to strengthen our Board and help grow the Wikimedia movement for future
generations. Most importantly, they bring a deep commitment to making
knowledge more freely available for people around the world,” said
executive director Lila Tretikov.

Kelly and Arnnon were approved unanimously by the Wikimedia Foundation
Board of Trustees. Both terms are effective Jan 1, 2016 and will last for
two years.

Please see the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees

[Wikimedia Announcements] Invitation to WMF November 2016 Metrics & Activities Meeting: Thursday, November 17, 19:00 UTC

2016-11-10 Thread Samantha Lien
Hello everyone,

The next Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meeting will take
place on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 7:00 PM UTC (11 AM PST). The IRC
channel is #wikimedia-office on irc.freenode.net, and the meeting will be
broadcast as a live YouTube stream.

Update/change to meeting format: The Wikimedia Foundation is exploring a
revised format for the November meeting. Our intent is to share work from
the Foundation and movement, but also to connect our work more broadly
within the movement’s biggest opportunities and challenges.

To do this, we are piloting the November meeting around a theme that has
been at the forefront of much of our work recently: “Building an inclusive
movement.”

In November, speakers will highlight projects, initiatives, and work that
actively foster inclusivity within our movement -- to create a space for
everyone to contribute and share in knowledge on the Wikimedia sites.

Here is the agenda for the November meeting:

* Welcomes, theme introduction - “Building an inclusive movement”

* Executive Director update

* Community update

* June 2016 Inspire Campaign - Chris Schilling

* Guest speaker - Wikipedia Asian Month - Addis Wang

* Questions and discussion

* Wikilove

As you may have seen, we are inviting a guest speaker to participate at the
November meeting. Addis Wang, an active member of the Wikimedia User Group
China, will be sharing some of his work with Wikipedia Asian Month and his
efforts to create an inclusive space and invite people to participate in
the edit-a-thon.

In future meetings, we would like to have one guest speaker from a
Wikimedia community or someone from outside the movement present on their
work that ties in with that month’s theme. (More information to come on
this process moving forward, and who to reach out to if you would like to
present in future meetings).

If you have any questions about the new format, please feel free to reach
out to me, Sam Lien, at the Communications department sl...@wikimedia.org.

Please review

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_metrics_and_activities_meetings

for further information about the meeting and how to participate.

We will post the video recording publicly after the meeting.

Thank you,
Sam

Harassment takes different forms on Wikipedia than it does on other major
websites. Unlike other platforms, Wikipedia editors generally don’t write
about their personal lives. Instead, on Wikipedia, harassment usually
begins as a content dispute between editors that results in an attack on an
editor’s personal attributes—their gender, race, religion, sexual
orientation, political affiliation—based on something that they’ve shared,
or an assumption based on the user’s edit history.

(San Francisco, California) 8 November 2017 — The Wikimedia Foundation is
excited to announce the appointment of Toby Negrin as Chief Product
Officer. Toby has been leading the Foundation's product development in an
interim capacity since April. He brings nearly 20 years of experience of
integrating data, research, and design to produce effective and popular
products.

The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that supports
Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. Together, Wikipedia and the
Wikimedia projects are visited by more than a billion unique devices every
month. The Wikimedia Foundation is driven by its mission to build a world
in which every single person can freely share in the sum of all human

As Chief Product Officer, Toby will lead one of the organization's largest
departments in collaborating with the Wikimedia communities on the
development of the software products which operate Wikipedia and the other
Wikimedia projects. He will be responsible for cultivating a culture of
excellence, engagement, and sustainability within the product engineering

staff as they develop and explore new skills and roles. I am thrilled to
have him leading the Wikimedia Foundation's product development efforts."

Since joining the Wikimedia Foundation in 2013, Toby has led an expansion
of our analytics efforts, built a new team focused on people who utilize
the content developed by Wikimedia's volunteers, and championed the
development of intuitive mobile interfaces and mobile applications. Toby
played a critical role in the creation of the organization's Community Tech
team, which develops features and tools based on feedback from active
members of the communities. He was also a part of the creation of the New
Readers program, a cross-departmental effort to help new people discover
and benefit from Wikimedia's projects.

Prior to joining the Wikimedia Foundation, Toby led analytics efforts at
DeNA, a mobile social games company. At DeNA, he partnered with colleagues
in Japan and China to build global dashboards used to track gaming
performance around the world. He also held roles at Yahoo! related to cloud
platforms, anti-abuse efforts, and content moderation. Toby grew up in Los
Angeles and the UK before landing in the San Francisco Bay Area, and worked
in software development at startups in Sweden and The Netherlands.

"The Wikimedia movement is an amazing collaboration among editors,
developers, chapters and other organizations around the globe," Toby said.
"I am excited and honored to be part of the movement and look forward to
partnering with our communities to build the tools and experiences for the
next 15 years."

[Wikimedia Announcements] [PRESS RELEASE] Wikipedia volunteers and free knowledge leaders gather in Cape Town for the first annual “Wikimania” conference in sub-saharan Africa

2018-07-21 Thread Samantha Lien
 will hear feedback from
volunteers about the program in a session on Sunday at Wikimania and
further explore future implementation of these types of programs with other
volunteer communities.

The annual Wikimania gathering will also provide an opportunity for
volunteers to discuss Wikimedia’s future as part of Wikimedia 2030, a
global consultation to define the future of the Wikimedia movement.
Challenges with software localisation, the structure of data, and even
newforms of knowledge that Wikimedia has defined as “verifiable”
(text-based, rather than oral, for example) are some of the issues the
movement is grappling with as it moves actively towards incorporating more
diverse forms of knowledge within Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects.

Wikimania also offers conference-goers time to experience the unique
culture of Cape Town and join in the celebrations of Nelson Mandela’s 100th
birthday. The conference’s theme, “Bridging knowledge gaps—the ubuntu way
forward,” captures this spirit and finds its roots in the philosophy and
way of life ubuntu.

“Ubuntu is summarised as the philosophy of ‘I am because you are,’ or
alternatively ‘the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all
humanity,'” explained Wikimedia South Africa President, Douglas Scott.
“Volunteer community-driven projects like Wikipedia and what we are hoping
to achieve at Wikimania in Cape Town capture this ethos well. Wikimedia
South Africa is honored to have this opportunity to share this spirit with
our friends and colleagues around the world.”

The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that supports
Wikipedia, the Wikimedia free knowledge projects, and its mission of free
knowledge for every single person.
