Cross posting on India/Mumbai/Pune mailing lists

Just to follow up on the minutes of Mumbai X - we would like to invite
members of the national wikicommunity to come and support WikiConference
 2011, Mumbai/Pune.

It was felt important that to move forward we need an Event Organising
Committee (OC) for the WikiConference and sub-committee members. Kindly note
we are not looking for people who just lend their names but people who will
actually come forward and put in time and effort in the entire 6 month
 preceding period.

 Sub-Committees suggested:

•Conference Programming (Includes Themes, Tracks, Keynote Speakers and
 Scheduling)
Deciding the direction this meet should take.

•Finance (Includes both budgeting, raising finances and scholarships)
People who are either qualified or have experience preferred. Handling
 finance of such an event

 •Conference Venue and Catering
Coordination of venue and catering booking to helping things move on the
 floor during the event

 •Major Events (Attendee Party/Mega Event)
Undertaking responsibility of any major events other than actual conference

 •Press and Media coordination
Deciding on a path for media promotion of event, giving interviews,
inviting media and taking care of them during the event

 •Accommodation and Registration
Reserving the accommodation, picking people up and making sure they find
their accommodation, registering people on the event day.

 •Promotion and Advertisement
There will be a promotion budget which will have to be judiciously used for
maximum benefit - again person with experience or qualification preferred.

 •Technical and IT
Running the event site, setting up wifi and other electronic goods, webcast
of the event online for those who cannot make it in person

 •Volunteer
On ground. Running around during the event

Whoever is interested in being on the OC or any of the sub-committees,
kindly write to the Mumbai list (*wikimedia-in-...@lists.wikimedia.org*).

The film is also named Wikipedia and is dedicated to Wikipedians.

The short film is directed by Joshi Koottungal.

The film talks about the dependency of internet Wikipedia for anything
and everything. It depicts the life of a writer named C.K. on changing times
of reading and getting knowledge behaviors.

I think, the English subtitle is not really complete and some of
 the dialogues are missing.

The film has a bit of anti-climax which may be mistaken as real by some
 audience :)

Nice film. Enjoyed it. Use of Malayalam wiki in the screen would have
helped in getting the message of indic language wikimedias,

Google shutting down translate and transliterate APIS.
Many Indic websites applications will now be affected

Read more here:

Looks like this is the right time for WMF tech team to create their own APIs

Just noticed, Google is replacing the Translation API with Google Web
Elements, available at http://www.google.com/webelements/#!/translate
Do have a look and see, if you can make anything of it.
I can't find anything from Google to replace the Transliteration API, I
won't be surprised if they ask us to use the Translator toolkit.

While this may sound bad, it really isn't all that bad.
There are plenty of other transliterators. I personally prefer Bing to
Google. You also have Quillpad and Baraha. Apart from this, I use a tool
called Keymmanweb on the English wikipedia which works as an on screen indic
keypad. There are plenty of alternatives to Google. Just as we don't use
Google Maps for locations, but use all providers including OSM, we can try
 something new this time.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] A Malayalam short film Wikipedia

2011-05-27 Thread CherianTinu Abraham
Hey,
Does anyone knows the director or reach him? Is he a Wikipedian ?

He might like to change is the opening subtitles. It says the short is
dedicated to Wikipedians and they would literally
be nonexistent without Wikipedia. But most likely he meant the other way
around.

Another one is that he may show a small disclaimer that Wikipedia will
continue for free and will not be blocked.

Could have got these things changed,if we could reach him.

Anyone?

Tinu Cherian

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Google shutting down translate and transliterate APIS

2011-05-27 Thread Anivar Aravind
There is major problem in depending upon Non-FOSS solutions.
It seems google used api's for collecting crowd sourced input for
improving their database now shutting it down. Input methods such as
Tranlitration does not need online services . It can be easily done
without google or microsoft. And popularise extensions such as
Narayam existing on mediawiki is the best way to move forward. In
addition, it will be good if Indic wikipediam's can develop a
stylebook for correct usage and link it with extensions such as
narayam. Then the possibility of typing errors can also be reduced.

In my pinion Translation Service its api of google for indic is not
that great anyway , and usable for wikimedia projects . So i believe
it will not make much issues in wikimedia indic projects
