[Wikimediaindia-l] Boxbe and mailing lists.

2011-06-22 Thread CherianTinu Abraham
Hi all,
We have recently noticed that many of the subscribers to various Wikimedia
are using Boxbe services.

This creates lots of problem for the mailing lists since unwanted
notifications are sent to the list from your id.

We would appreciate if we could put mails from *@lists.wikimedia.org to some
kind of white list.

Thanks for the understanding.

Thank you, Tinu. It is indeed very frustrating. I have a filter that
removes all such emails and trashes them - the only people affected
are those that don't get our emails because we don't "approve" or
"verify" ourselves.

Thanks Tinu for the guideline. I have added BoxBe to list spam filter,
linkedIn invitations are still a problem as i havent figured out the way to
handle. Ideally it can come from top down from lists perspective. I have
raised a bug here[1]. But then best thing always, may better sense prevail

Subject: [WikiConference-India 2011] First speaker lined up!
To: For organising national WikiConferences in India <
wikiconference-in...@lists.wikimedia.org>

Short on the heels of our first tentative sponsor is our tentative first
speaker. On the talk page of the schedule on Meta:, I had suggested that we
could schedule a talk on ''Indian Biodiversity in Wikipedia - Issues,
challenges & the way ahead'' by Shyamal.

He has agreed to my proposal.

The Indian biodiversity scene has a number of people who work on Wikipedia
but rarely venture out in Outreach and as such remain completely unknown to
the general Wikipedia community. Shyamal is such a guy. So I will introduce
you to him.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Shyamal

An editor since 26 November 2002, Shyamal has an edit count of over 36,000
edits on English Wikipedia, is an administrator on English Wikipedia and is
quite simply India's most prolific contributor on Nature and Wild life.

Respected amongst the ornithological community in India, where he wrote a
seminal paper in 2007 on "Whither Indian Ornithology" in a peer-reviewed
journal, Indian Birds,

http://www.indianbirds.in/pdfs/Opinion%20Taking%20Indian%20ornithology%20into%20the%20Information%20Age.pdf

...he has contributed over 5200 images to Commons, many of them carefully
retrieved from nineteenth century books and cleaned up and loaded as well as
svg images painstakingly crafted

http://toolserver.org/~daniel/WikiSense/Gallery.php?wikifam=commons.wikimedia.org&wikilang=en&order=-img_timestamp&img_user_text=Shyamal&ofs=0&max=250

He has theorised about the role of Open Science in India, and commented on
influential papers on Wikipedia in Science.

http://thebutterflydiaries.wordpress.com/2009/08/09/open-science/

Shyamal has also loaded hundreds of documents into www.archive.org where
they are now available to posterity.

When he reads this, Shyamal will once again accuse me of being a hagiograph.
Well, as a fauji, I like to call a spade a spade. Just thought, you'd like
to know.

The Indian community has many unsung WikiHeroes, one of whom is Shyamal.

[Wikimediaindia-l] About description of of Wikipedia

2011-06-22 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi
Hi All,

We are amid of an ongoing description of changing the current description of
Odia Wikipedia.

The present description is as below-
ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉଇକିପିଡ଼ିଆ (Odia Wikipedia)
ଗୋଟିଏ ଖୋଲା ଭାଷାକୋଷ (Eka khola bhasakosa meaning An Open Encyclopedia)

But as most suggesting the name "Gyanamandala" or "Gyana kosa", I just want
to ask one thing, is that fine if we change the description from "Bhasakosa"
to "Gyanamandala"?

But, here is a question! A friend has mentioned that "Gyanamandala" is the
name of an old encyclopedia. *(Published during 1961-1988 by Binod Kanungo).
* But "Gyanamandala" is a generic name in Odia Language which means
"Encyclopedia", So, can we use this word in the description part.

PS This is the text which appears below the name "Wikipedia" in Odia
Wikipedia logo (http://or.wikipedia.org )

Please give your suggestions.

2011-06-22 Thread Shiju Alex
I do not think any one can get copyright for the common words of a language.
But not sure.

Gautham, your help required. :)

2011-06-22 Thread Gautam John
If I understand correctly, there is a book called "Gyanamandala" and
you want to use this same name for Wikipedia in Oriya? Is this word
defined in the dictionary? That asked, I highly doubt copyright
protection exists for a word - trademark perhaps but not copyright.

Thank you.

Yes Gautam, *"Gyanamandala" * is a GENERIC NAME*, *and there is a book in
the same name and the word "Gyanamandala" means "Gyana" (Knowledge)+
"Mandala" (Combination/Base), used in places like "Nakhyatra Mandala" /
"Tara Mandala" (set of stars in the sky).

So, please let me know if the use of this word to describe this phrase "*An
open Encyclopedia" *is fine?

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Technical Help Needed

2011-06-22 Thread Gautam John
Hey All:

Just to say that Arnav Chaudhary came forward to help with a CiviCRM
instance and to help customise it too.

A beta is here:
http://74.117.238.2/~wiki/index.php?q=civicrm/contribute/transact&reset=1&id=2

Would be great if you could all play with it and enter test details
(and an email address) and report back if it works as expected?

The original use cases are below.

Arnav - thank you so very much for stepping forward to help with this
- much appreciated and many many thanks.

Thank you.

Best,

Gautam

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Technical Help Needed

2011-06-22 Thread Bence Damokos
Hi,

It looks good.
A couple of notes:
Is it deliberate that only India can be selected as a country?
If you click continue to confirm your details, there are two unnecessary
date input boxes present.
If you click to finish the transaction the site gives the following error:
"
Database Error Code: Table 'wiki_wiki.users' doesn't exist, 1146Additional
Details:
Array ( [callback] => Array ( [0] => CRM_Core_Error [1] =>
handle ) [code]
=> -18 [message] => DB Error: no such table [mode] =>
16[debug_info] => SELECT uid FROM users where name = 'Bdamokos'
[nativecode=1146 ** Table 'wiki_wiki.users' doesn't exist] [type] =>
DB_Error [user_info] => SELECT uid FROM users where name = 'Bdamokos'
[nativecode=1146 ** Table 'wiki_wiki.users' doesn't exist] [to_string] =>
[db_error: message="DB Error: no such table" code=-18
mode=callback callback=CRM_Core_Error::handle prefix=""
info="SELECT uid FROM users where name = 'Bdamokos' [nativecode=1146 **
Table 'wiki_wiki.users' doesn't exist]"] )

" ; indicating some problem with the database set up.

Anyhow, I got an e-mail that my Drupal registration went through, so
regardless of the error, the site seems to work to some degree.

I hope the above results help in any way, I know from experience that Civi
can be a pain...

Best regards,
Bence
