Feature already there.

Just needs some refinement.

You will be sent an Email after completing the form which includes all the
data filled and that can be signed and sent back.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Name and Logo of National Conference

2011-06-23 Thread wheredevelsdare

**Cross posted on various Indian Mailing Lists**

As per Community consensus, the annual national conference of Wikipedians in
India will be titled WikiConference India.

We now need a special Logo for the event.

This logo will be used not only this year, but annually for the national
conference. Community members are requested to come up with designs and post
them on the talk page of the event on meta latest by 1PM, Monday 27 June 2011.
Thereafter we will have a 48 hour window for the other community members to
vote for the design they like.
**Kindly note, we expect the designers to assign unconditionally all rights to
the logo design to Wikimedia Chapter (India) under whose jurisdiction this
conference comes without any remuneration or other considerations. You will be
recognised as the designer of the logo.**

Weblink for the Event Talk Page on Meta:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:WikiConference_India_2011#Logo

Looking forward to seeing some brilliant designs.

Same is the case with me. I would like to see a report writer with pdf
support which can generate pdf file with user details and additional text
in the application form that can be mailed to the user (as given in pdf
membership form) for sending the hard copy after signing to chapter office.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia Offline Opportunity: ~20k laptops to reach potentially 200k people: Need Help!

2011-06-23 Thread Hisham Mundol
cross posting to Offline & Wikimedia-India.

Hi

I'm working on the Wikimedia Foundation's initiatives in India and I'm reaching
out for help on a really exciting opportunity. Assam is a state in the
North-East of India. The Government has an interesting scheme to give laptops
to deserving students leaving secondary school (i.e., completed 10 years of
education and about 15-16 year olds.) This scheme is being managed by an
organisation called Amtron - who have issued a Tender for the procurement of
these laptops.

There are 19,000 laptops that will be distributed in this initiative. (These
are on Ubuntu Linux - and very reasonably configured.)

Assam has traditionally had a problem with infrastructure and Internet access
is a problem. Someone who is supporting Amtron has asked the Foundation if we
can give them an offline version of Wikipedia to pre-load onto these computers.
Given that it is for 15-16 age group, it does need to be of appropriate
content. They'd like it to have topics of academic interest covered (e.g.,
classical sciences, humanities, literature and accountancy.) Ideally we'd
like them to also have articles on India (e.g. history, geography, culture,
etc.) as well as other areas of general interest (e.g., music, sports, etc.)
Currently, everything is required in English only.

While these laptops aren't going to necessarily be in classrooms, given that
they will be with some students, it's safe to assume that other students,
friends and relatives would access these. Given the context of Assam, I thank
we can easily assume that 10 people would access these computers. That adds up
to improving access for nearly 2,00,000 people! I'm really inspired by the
potential of this partnership because because it allows us huge scale with
efficiency in effort.

I understand that Wikipedia for Schools is readying for release sometime in
July 2011 - and the timing couldn't be better.

Can you help us out with
a) how you could help on adding the additional articles that this initiative
would require? (You could also sign up on the Volunteer Page)
b) how fast this can be given to Amtron? (They are looking for the inputs in
July 2011.)
c) any other ideas that you think might be useful?

Many thanks.

Best,

Hisham Mundol

candidate for this scheme since its "hassle free" in terms of effort (no
proof checking etc required) and bulk of the words(mostly
technical glossary) were from Tamil Virtual University. Let me dig more
into it.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] About description of of Wikipedia

2011-06-23 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi
Here is a reply from one user regarding this.

Sambidhan:As I said earlier Gyanamandala is an IPR of Binod Kanungo &
Gyanamandala foundation. IPR includes trademark, copyright & design patent.
Gyanamandala is a registered trademark of the foundation, even the
government of orissa refrains from using "gyanamandal" to describe an
encyclopedia. Secondly what is also important is on which context are you
using the word if you are using the word for a similar product then there
are chances that 2nd party can be sued. Thirdly as far as I know it is
always best to stay away from controversy. Things like this will drag the
whole wikipedia foundation into a controversy which is best avoided and
which the foundation tries to avoid as well. Especially when there are
better alternate available. Fourthly the generic word for describing an
encyclopedia in odia is gyanakosha or biswakosha. Finally majority of the
people as you can see have accepted gyanakosha as the word for describing
encyclopedia and wikipedia is a democratic organisation which goes by what
the majority of the mass wants.

And I asked how could I refer our discussion in WP.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] About description of of Wikipedia

2011-06-23 Thread Shiju Alex
>
> Gyanamandala is an IPR of Binod Kanungo & Gyanamandala foundation.

Is this is possible? Can some one take patent/trademark for some words of a
language?

Here is my take on this name issue :

The name of our encyclopedia is *Wikipedia*. It is wikipedia in all
languages. In odia it is ଉଇକିପିଡ଼ିଆ. Hope there is no issue regarding that
in Odia wiki community.

Now the Odia community is having differences regarding the translation of
the word *Encyclopedia* that is used in the phrase "The Free Encyclopedia".
Let us see how this word is translated in other Indian languages:

   - Hindi - ज्ञानकोष - *Gnanakosh*
   - Marathi - ज्ञानकोश - *Gnanakos*
   - Gujarati - વિશ્વજ્ઞાનકોષ - *Vijanakosh *
   - Bengali - বিশ্বকোষ - (Jayantha/Tanvir please transliterate, I guess it
   is *Vijnjanakosh)*
   - Kannada - ವಿಶ್ವಕೋಶ - *Vishwakosa*
   - Telugu - విజ్ఞాన సర్వస్వము - *Vijnjaana sarvasvamu *
   - Tamil - கலைக்களஞ்சியம் - *KalaikkaLanchiyam*
   - Malayalam - സർവ്വവിജ്ഞാനകോശം - *Sarvavijanakosam*

(as usual Tamil is different :) )

In general, across all Indian languages the words *Viswakosh*/*Gnjakosh*/*
Vijanakosh* are used to represnt the word Encyclopedia. But there will be
one word which might be used more frequently than other words. For example,
in Malayalam the word Gnanakosam and Viswakosam are hardly used to denote
encyclopedia. We use Vijanakosam. Like this each language has some
preference over the words. After all this diversity is the beauty of Indian
languages.

So my suggestion is, use the same word that is used more frequency by Odia
speaking people.

But my appeal

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] About description of of Wikipedia

2011-06-23 Thread Surya Prakash
FYI

Description should contain the word, "THE FREE"

In Tamil, we've translated it as "கட்டற்ற" (kattatRa) (means "NO BOUNDS")
You add that word too. In Hindi it may be मुफ्त विश्वकोश (I am not sure.
Google translated)
You also in your Odia must have the word like the *muftha*. So, better add
that too before the encyclopedia. :)

Happy editing.

Subhashish, if it's a registered trademark as they claim, then it is
certainly not worth using that name - too many hassles.

That said, I ran a trademark search

anything.

Thank you.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] About description of of Wikipedia

2011-06-23 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi
Well, in general Odia speakers write it as *ଜ୍ଞାନକୋଷ (Gyanakosa*, and as per
the consensus out of 7 supports/different views in the
VPwe
got 5 supporting Gyanakosa (including me and I support both Gyanakosa
and
Gyanamandala).

Is this consensus enough to make changes as most active users have given
their views and as per standard Odia language this is correct?

Should I go ahead with the neccessary modification with the logo?
