2011-09-27 Thread Shekhar Krishnan
The old logo is SPELLED INCORRECTLY.

For those who do not read Devanagri or just see it as a symbolic design
it may be beautiful. But it is WRONG. It reads chikri or vikri, not
wiki. See the spelling here http://hi.wikipedia.org/wiki/

Best,

Shekhar

hi,

I think the decision is pretty clear with a lot more people going for the
old logo. The decision is hence to stick with the current logo.

Just for the sake of completion:
1. Stay with the old logo = 10
2. Change to new logo = 6
3. No clear indication given = 1 (Vishal - although we could include him in
the change to new logo bloc as well as the old logo bloc)

Let's call this discussion closed! I am happy that several people
participated in the process and hope we all continue to do so!

I guess,

We are going to the wrong direction. The current logo creating problem to
understand what it means while reading it.

I believe on Simplicity is always beautiful when it can be understand by all.
The new logo is simple but can understand easily.

Because we are Wikipedians and we read hindi, marathi we feel it's OK...Logo
says WIKI but the person who is not familiar to hindi, marathi wikipedia he
reads it as Vikree or Chikree.

I will suggest to keep new logo.

This is suggestion and would like if other members strongly think about it.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia India Education Program Updates

2011-09-27 Thread Nitika
 Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share few updates regarding Wikipedia India Education
 Program.

 1. We conducted over 11 sessions in different classes to address the issue
of copyright violations to make sure that students understand the gravity of
this issue. We visited each class and spoke with the students that they
simply cannot copy-paste on wikipedia and have also been warned about the
consequences of doing so. One of the important learning from this is that
going forward we need to include the issue of copyvio in in-class editing
sessions. In the next semester, we shall take all precautionary steps and
make sure that the students have been taught in detail about copyvios so
that we face less problems like this going forward.

 2. We conducted an open wikipedia day at the SSE where we were available on
campus the whole day and students could reach out to us for any fundamental
or technical wiki editing problems that they would have - more like a help
desk throughout the day. Unfortunately, it didn't work as well as we had
expected it to as not too many students came by with their problems. We'll
have to think of more innovate ways of conducting such open days - any
 ideas/suggestions are more than welcome.

 3. We now have a bigger and stronger army of Campus Ambassadors Online
Ambassadors to support the students enrolled in the India Educational
Program. 17 more Campus Ambassadors and 26 new Online Ambassadors are now
onboard and will be helping students write better articles. I'll be sharing
 an update on this shortly.

 4. The so famous Robinson Crusoe Economy Article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robinson_Crusoe_Economy written by one of the
 students User:Abhilasha369: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Abhilasha369 is
now a 'Good Article' on Wikipedia. This is an achievement for the program!!!
I believe that this is just the beginning and we'll hopefully see many more
GAs and FAs emerging out of the program.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Welcoming 2nd Generation Pune Campus Ambassadors

2011-09-27 Thread Nitika
 Hi everyone,

To support over 1000 students enrolled in the India Education program we now
welcome 17 more Campus Ambassadors onboard..!!

Just to give you a backdrop, we'd opened the CA applications for over 2
weeks. The applicants had to submit their purpose of statement to become a CA
followed by a round of interview. Out the huge lot of applications we
received, we selected 17 bright enthusiastic Campus Ambassadors. We also
organized a two day CA training for them where we concentrated on various
aspects like how to tackle various questions by the students, how to help
students write better articles, how to conduct in-class sessions, how to
coordinate with the professors, how to tackle copyvio issues etc etc.

The training was very well received and was a lot of fun! We had 100%
attendance and all the 17 new CAs participated very actively. Im sure they
are and will continue to support the students with equal amount of
enthusiasm. Im sharing their usernames with you all, just incase you'd like
to congratulate them, talk to them about the program or just to say a quick

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia in TN text books

2011-09-27 Thread Bala Jeyaraman
Hi all,

English wikipedia articles are listed in the Further reading sections of
lessons in science text books of the recently implemented Samacheer Kalvi
(uniform education) syllabus in Tamil Nadu. A few examples are : Standard 7
science (lesson 11) Standard 8 science (lessons 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 11 and 13).
The text books can be downloaded from
http://www.textbooksonline.tn.nic.in/Std8.htm.

Inspite of some error in printing leading to non-existant pages, this at
least gives visibility to each and every student of the state (Std 7 / 8). I
really wish there were some Tamil wiki articles included in Tamil edition
given that we have some nice articles on Biology,Maths etc.

Realistically speaking, when have school students read further reading. At
least i don't recollect me doing it :D

[Wikimediaindia-l] or.wiktionary.org

2011-09-27 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
I am really pleased to inform you that the Oriya Wiktionary is the first
project ever to be officially re-enabled for editing. The Oriya community is
working really hard to make their projects a success. They are noticing that
the usability is improving as a consequence of the obligatory localisation
that they have to do. Once they are done, the language committee will assess
if a Wikiquote can be created as well.

The exception that was made to open up the Oriya Wiktionary was given
because there is a Wikimeet in the near future and we do want to give their
community more of a reason to be happy with their hard work.
Thanks,
 GerardM
