Controversial perhaps- but I think it's pretty important they learn the
principles here.

I am aware of quite a few PR and SMM agencies that edit Wikipedia and they
are generally quite unaware about the principles- and end up being a bigger
burden than they would otherwise have been had they known the process ahead
of time.

I welcome this endeavour by P. and Moksh.

I have three suggestions for inclusion here, based on recent experiences:
copyrights/copyvio, notability; and some emphasis on verifiability.

 hi,

The editing of Wikipedia by PR and social media agencies has been
controversial. It might raise eyebrows that you're going to inform
them how to edit Wikipedia. However, they will learn to edit even
without Wikipedian help. I think it is better to engage than to shy
 away.

Also, suggest that some or all of them who attend the Workshop be
invited for the city meetups and even join the mailing lists.

I'd have said CoI would have been more tan sufficient had I been asked
this a couple of months ago- but no, the problems are more fundamental.
Quite often, it is not clear to them that an entity should not have a page
in the first place; when they put up a page, they often simply copy text
right over from a press release or the client's website; and the sources
used (if at all) are usually first/second party.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia India: Wikipedia Takes Ahmedabad, January 2012

2012-01-03 Thread Anirudh Bhati
Greetings! This is a short update on the January edition of Wikipedia
Takes Ahmedabad. From where I stand, the event has been a resounding
success! Over seventy-five people turned up, both old and young, this
morning, which is no mean feat since it was very cold as well as a working
day.

Special thanks to Noopur Raval, our benevolent dictator and project
mastermind, Srikeit Tadepalli, who spent time with me following the project
participants prepping them and helping them figure out Wikimedia projects.
Our heartfelt gratitude to Aviral Mediratta, Khayal Dave, Yash Vadiwala,
Konarak Ratnakar, Smit Shah, Karthik Mistry and Chirag Solanki; our team
leads and coordinators for helping everyone take beautiful pictures.

Please keep an eye on our maintenance [[Category:Ahmedabad 1]], specially

expect a lot more being uploaded by tomorrow.

I will be posting a project report soon. Thank you!

Hello,

304+ images Thanks and congrats to you guys for organizing this.

Also the participants were told about adding Category:Ahmedabad_1 to their

Thus a mess could have been created, but User:Me.aragorn and myself started
adding relevant category by keeping an eye on newly uploaded files.

if the figure is still increasing, then you guys deserve a round of
applause. Congrats, especially Noopur. Your enthusiasm seems to have

having raised a record-breaking USD 20 million from more than one

 - Roads aren't designed with FOSS.

Arguable. The sentence is too imprecise.

 - Camera firmware isn't FOSS.

Yes, and cameras have not essentially changed in well over 100 years. They
went digital, but all that happened was the recording medium changed. With
the simple pinhole, it is perfectly possible to have software driven
lensless, infinitely variable depth of field and focus image recording.
Find me one commercial model camera that does this, and I can show you
dozens of advertising messages that equate good imaging with megapixels.

 - Our brain doesn't have FOSS.

Can we stick to the point? I do not think anybody on this list is actively
aware of any programming techniques that work for the brain; the question
or proprietary or FOSS doesn't even arise. However, if you want to include
alpha wave conditioning (analogue programming) then surely you will not
want to also claim that yoga is proprietary?

 - Bus ticketing isn't FOSS.

A terrible shame. Bus companies (indeed, all mass transit organisations)
are largely stuck in the past, their inefficiency mandates that the purpose
of public mass transport is a #fail, either because the service providers
cannot earn money doing it, or because individual means of public
transportation do not 'talk' to each other, their communication channels
being trapped within proprietary silos, leaving the public floundering with
the need to carry small change and waste time buying multiple tickets to
get from A to B. And the few reasonably successfully integrated public mass
transit setups that exist anywhere in the world (eg, London) use
proprietary software that does not replicate or scale to other places.

Well, Mediawiki and whole lot of other things used for Wikipedia related
 activities are FOSS.
And in general, it is about contributing back to the society so that
everybody gets benefitted. That's what is common in both FOSS as well as
