[Wikimediaindia-l] FOSS and Wikipedia
Heya, I think it is time to make a clear distinction between FOSS and Wikipedia out here. Wikipedia is NOT FOSS and FOSS is NOT Wikipedia. Only the basic ideology is the same, nothing else. Several of us, including Me, Pradeep have been victims of FOSS activism, both on the list and off the list. Wikipedia so't wholely reliant on FOSS, and will never be. I don't mean to offend anyone but this is it. Please comment. -- Regards, Srikanth Ramakrishnan, Sathyamangalam-Gobichettipalayam Star Gazers Gang, Ukkadam, Coimbatore. [Wikimediaindia-l] Mailing list Guidelines
Hi all, Off late the traffic to India list has gone up much more than what it was before (already a highly active list!). During the last couple of months, we moderators have got requests from members that the list is becoming pointless due to the volume of mails and quality of threads. I propose, together we all write down some list guidelines and follow them to make the list more productive. New members will be sent this guideline when they join the list. Please feel free to help out by making the list guidelines[1] (Which is a very rough draft now) [1] http://wiki.wikimedia.in/MailingList_Guidelines -- Regards Srikanth.L ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] FOSS and Wikipedia
hi, My only contribution to this shall be this. I am irritated at a PoV being pushed on the list sometimes that FOSS is the best way of doing things. People who edit Wikipedia comes from various backgrounds and FOSS advocates on this list have pushed me towards Microsoft products and I've found that some of their products are better than FOSS alternatives. Eg. MS Office. The outburst above is irrational. MediaWiki is FOSS. Perhaps, some technological under-pinnings (server, bots etc) are FOSS. What makes Wikipedia, and the important content is contribution by the people. They come from various backgrounds and belief systems. Not everyone supports FOSS and I am comfortable with this. We only share a need to share our knowledge and while open stuff enables it, we're not tied down by it. I do not see the need to bring time and again, the contributions of FOSS to Wikipedia on several threads. We acknowledge their contribution, that is all they ask for when they provide the user with the software. When we took their software, we did not know that we had to follow their methodologies to implement Wikipedia as well. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] FOSS and Wikipedia
I think people need to increase their tolerance level for what is not bad faith or unencyclopedic on this list. It seems that just mentioning FOSS is enough to trigger off rejoinders. See WP:IDONTLIKEIT This list exists to discuss matters related to Wikimedia community at large. Occasionally it has stuff like Indic language issues or tech issues which I do not comprehend or particularly interest me. But that is no reason for the thread not to exist. Similarly FOSS may come up like any other word in some context or the other. This whole business started because someone objected to a harmless occurrence of the word FOSS. If that person had not reacted to that harmless incidental use perhaps the thread would not have just got out of control as it has. As regards FOSS, I dont use FOSS myself but respect its use, its proponents and principles. I came to Wikipedia because I thought its principles are like FOSS and people friendly. But I don't do FOSS for mostly no reason at all and I am very comfortable with this ambiguity. If anyone doesn't like FOSS, feel completely free not to, but please don't feel free to erupt in outburst just because someone used the F-word. Paraphrasing a quote of Salman Rushdie :* Free speech means I write what I like, you read what you like, I say what I feel, you listen to what you want.* So I request that we may all simmer down a bit. If this continues then I would like to join them since I cant beat them. This I shall do by getting upset about the abhorrent word *baingan. *I dont like the taste of Brinjal and I promise to erupt in protest whenever the use of the term brinjal is used on this list, culinary or otherwise. Over seventy-five people turned up, both old and young, this morning, which is no mean feat since it was very cold as well as a working day. Special thanks to Noopur Raval, our benevolent dictator and project mastermind, Srikeit Tadepalli, who spent time with me following the project participants prepping them and helping them figure out Wikimedia projects. [Wikimediaindia-l] Birthday of Indic language wikipedias
Dear Indic wikipedians One of the aspects that was raised during the discussions with almost all Indic language wiki communities was the need to build existing communities, motivate existing community members, attract new community members by increasing awareness of projects and communities, and to celebrate all the possible occasions. I have a suggestion that can contribute to all of these in some manner. The suggestion is to celebrate the anniversaries of Indic language wikipedias. And as you might agree, the first edit date of a wiki is the best * anniversary* that a community can celebrate. I have collected information for the birthdays of each Indic Wikipedia. This is the day on which the first edit happened on the respective language wikipedia. (The *Indian Standard Time* is used while recording the date and time). I am listing those days below for your reference, *Indic Language wikipedia* *Birthday/Anniversary (Date of first edit)* *Number of active editors* *Assamese* http://as.wikipedia.org/ *June 02 (2002-June-02) http://as.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 10 *Nepali* http://ne.wikipedia.org/ *June 03 (2002-June-03) http://ne.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 13 *Punjab http://pa.wikipedia.org/i* *June 03 (2002-June-03) http://pa.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 3 *Malayalam* http://ml.wikipedia.org/ *December 21 (2002-December-21) http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 93 *Kannada* http://kn.wikipedia.org/ *January 12 (2003-January-12) http://kn.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 20 *Bhojpuri* http://bh.wikipedia.org/ *February 21 (2003-February-21) http://bh.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 0 *Hindi* http://hi.wikipedia.org/ *July 11 http://hi.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1 (2003-July-11) http://hi.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 55 *Kashmiri* http://ks.wikipedia.org/ *July 26 (2003-July-26) http://ks.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=5* 1 *Tamil* http://ta.wikipedia.org/ *September 30 (2003-September-30) http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=5* 85 *Marathi* http://mr.wikipedia.org/ *October 20 (2003-October-20) http://mr.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 44 *Gujarati* http://gu.wikipedia.org/ *December 09 (2003-December-09) http://gu.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 11 *Sanskrit* http://sa.wikipedia.org/ *December 21 (2003-December-21) http://sa.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 16 *Sindhi* http://sd.wikipedia.org/ *December 26 (2003-December-26) http://sd.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 5 *Bengali* http://bn.wikipedia.org/ *January 27 http://bn.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=6 (2004-January-27)http://bn.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=6 * 52 *Urdu* http://ur.wikipedia.org/ *January 27 (2004-January-27) http://ur.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=2* 15 *Odia (Oriya http://or.wikipedia.org/)* *January 29 (2004-January-29) http://or.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 10 *Telugu* http://te.wikipedia.org/ *January 29 (2004-January-29) http://te.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 32 *Pali* http://pi.wikipedia.org/ *July 29 (2004-July-29) http://pi.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=1* 0 *Newari* http://new.wikipedia.org/ *October 01 (2006-October-01) http://new.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=4* 1 *Bishnupriya Manipuri* http://bpy.wikipedia.org/ *October 01 (2006-October-01) http://bpy.wikipedia.org/wiki/?diff=2* 2 This list is available in meta also. http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_-_India_Programs/Indic_Languages#State_of_Indic_Language_Projects I recommend that we use these anniversary dates to do the following - Organize a small wikiconfernce or some other major event for the respective language wikipedia - Organize community meetups to celebrate this - Coincide community events around these meetups (such as outreach sessions, photo events, or launching specific WikiProjects) - Invite press to these meetups and use different platforms to spread word about respective language wikipedia. From the above table we can see that *Assamese* is the first Indic language wikipedia, and 4 Indic language wikipedias will celebrate *10th anniversary* this year (2012). :) So it is time to get prepared for the celebration. Happy Birthday Celebrations! (Others might not need since they already use optimally / may not have too many newbies like us) This is a fairly contentious topic. Those guidelines for IRC aren't really as enforceable, it is usually the ops who decide on case-by-case basis. We have to conform to certain guidelines because of Freenode as well, the service provider, mailing lists don't have that. The guidelines are usually for list moderators. While I won't suggest a heavy handed approach to this, certain guidelines were formed years ago for lists, like a monthly soft-limit of 30 posts by a single person. They really weren't enforced. I'm all for controlling the traffic on this list Srikanth, but this is not an easy thing to do with just drafting guidelines. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Mailing list Guidelines
I think Srikanth's list is quite an acceptable list of guidelines. A list exists for the purpose of discussion. Theoretically every Wikipedian subscribed to this list can respond to every thread and start a thread of their own everyday. Should this happen, our discussions would rise in magnitude astronomically I think. For those who feel that the list is becoming pointless due to the volume of mails and quality of threads, the option remains to voluntarily unsubscribe. Alternatively, please start an interesting and pointful thread of your own. But then I will be the lodestone to decide whether it is indeed qualititatively Any topic relevant to the broad Wikimedian community not having a list of its own can be discussed. In addition, announcements, requests to participate in polls, or issues on other lists may also be featured. What is NOT acceptable are completely offtopic issues such as those outlined in Srikath's guidelines.
