[Wikimediaindia-l] Building the Assamese Wiki Community - Outreach programs during next week

2012-01-23 Thread Shiju Alex
Dear All,

I am writing - on behalf of the Assamese wiki community (
http://as.wikipedia.org) - to share some very promising news from the
beautiful land of the Brahmaputra.

Assamese wiki community is tiny and has about 20 active editors now, out of
which 5 are very active editors. Assamese wikipedia has around 1050
 articles now. Last year this
time
Assamese
wikipedia was having just 300 articles (that were created during the span
of past 8 years) and just 4 active editors (and not a single very active
editor). So during last one year lot of things happenned in the background
which led to the current active status of Assamese. As an Indic wikipedia
community member I congratulate all the members of Assamese wiki community
who contributed to this change of status.

Over the past few weeks the community has been working on basic community
building blocks. As part of this, there are active community discussions
on the village pump, through
facebook
, mailing list
(which
was created a few weeks
ago),
 and
through various other channels. The community is actively planning for
various outreach programs to increase the number of active members and
there by to increase the number of articles. As a result of this Assamese
wiki community has decided to conduct an Assamese wiki meetup cum
Wikiworkshop in Guwahati on 2012 January 29.

I do not believe there has ever been any outreach sessions in Assam -
though I could be wrong. Atleast this is the first out reach program for
Assamese wikipedia. Over the next one week, there are going to be not 1 but
2 Assamese wiki outreach sessions! One in *Guwahati* and another in *Tezpur*
.

   - Sunday January 29th at Guwahati University (Meetup
page
   )
   - Wednesday February 2nd at Tezpur University (Meetup
page
   )

Both these session are being promoted on facebook also to attract more
Assamese speakers. Assamese wiki community expect around 20 participants in
Guwahati, and at least 10 in Tezpur (though Tezpur has only just been
posted so this is my guess; it could increase.) I am really excited by
these developments. The Assamese community has realised both the
importance of attracting newbies and also how to work collaboratively on
outreach activities.

There are also a couple of other things that I think are worth sharing.

   - Assamese community - like many community members in Indic languages -
were struggling with how to go about doing outreach. To begin with, even
something like a venue proved to be challenge and community members
approached me since their resources are limited. I personally wrote to the
Head of Guwahati University's Computer Sciences department, introducing
Assamese wiki community and myself and asking for her help - and she has
kindly agreed to give us a conference room with all the required facilities
free of cost! The reason I am sharing this is, if other Indic wikipedians
are wondering how to go about doing this, it is really simple: Be Bold!
Just write and ask! Once you mention Wikipedia and what we are trying to
do, there is a very decent chance of getting a positive reply. Remember
that while we are doing a wikipedia program for our mother language
wikipedia we are sending a powerful message to the speakers of the
respective language. So be bold and continue to due more such programs for
your respective mother language wikipedia. Language speakers will support
   us.
   - Assamese community is working on the FAQs booklet and other outreach
materials that they plan to release as part of this meetup. These are being
done in Assamese. I am helping them out. I am sharing this because if any
Indic wikipedians need help on this, please feel free to reach out to me.
I will help you. Also, do keep in mind that the only way things like this
can work only if outreach materials are prepared in the respective
language. Outreach materials in respective language has so much power to
attract the newbies. Also, do share it with your fellow community members
   so they can use them.

I want to conclude by sharing an Assamese quote ‘Bhāxār bikāx holehe jātir
bikāx hobo’ which translate into "The nation develops only when the
language develops."

Do join in me in congratulating the Assamese community for their efforts
and wishing them all the best for their community building efforts.

This is the start of a very exciting journ

[Wikimediaindia-l] Technical tutorials for Wikimedia meetups

2012-01-23 Thread Sumana Harihareswara
We just finished the San Francisco hackathon, which was quite a success:
about 90 participants, more than a dozen project demonstrations, and a
lot of engagement with San Francisco technologists and designers. I
want to let you know that we ran a few tutorials that now have reference
notes/documentation available:

* Customizing your experience with JavaScript (using user scripts & Gadgets)
* Using our web API
* Building & working on a Wikipedia app for Android using Phonegap

I hope you find these tutorials useful as syllabi or references when you
are running your own meetups, hackathons, and other events. The links
are all centralized here:

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Hackathon_January_2012

The storytelling staff also helped us out by recording video and audio
of the tutorials so people can watch them later! They will upload those
recordings soon.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Foundation-l] REMINDER: Wikimania 2013 - invitation to bid

2012-01-23 Thread Ashwin Baindur
As one intimately involved in the planning and execution of the last
WikiConference India, we need to have a cold rational thought on this
process for bidding for Wikimania, not hubris.

Without prejudice to User:Vibhijain, a bid from Delhi cannot be made
unilaterally by an under-age editor who is not in a position to
execute any of the responsible roles. There should be a requirement
for each bidding city community to show support and backing. Otherwise
the bid should be thrown out.

That Delhi has editors is without question, the real question is does
Delhi have a strong and united wikicommunity which will be able to
take on this kind of huge commitment? There are few signs of such an
established community, not withstanding lot of relatively new editors
such as Noopur taking up new activities to do which hopefully will
lead to a strong and vibrant community in the future.

For the reasons mentioned above, the Delhi bid should be re-examined
in all seriousness.

I'm not siding with Mumbai either. In my opinion, we should have a few
more WikiConferences India before we ask for Wikimania. India needs
WikiConference Indias, not to host the international community. It is
akin to the person who has not yet furnished his house or setup his
residence in a city falling over himself to invite others from
outside.

WikiConference India 2011 stretched the volunteer community of the
nation's Wikipedians and was possible due to the unflinching support
of so many others not from the city. Which is as it should be. So can
the country deal with both a WikiConference and Wikimania in the same
year? I think not. Suppose another city, say Kolkata hosted
WikiConference India, where would the funds, volunteers attention go?
I think it is a raw deal for the city hosting the WikiConference. The
amount of volunteer effort which goes into these is not funny. I think
around 5000 edits worth of effort of mine went into the Conference.

WikiConference India 2011 proved to be beyond the resources of Mumbai
wikipedians alone. If they have bid for Wikimania 2013, can they
assure the Indian wikipedian community that they can tackle this even
larger event without extensive external help when they could not
tackle the smaller?

If Indian editors are supposed to all join in loyally to support
Mumbai should it win the bid, isn't it right that Mumbai ask the
community's opinion at large first before bidding instead of taking it
for granted that Indian volunteers will pitch in when needed?

I do not grudge supporting Mumbai, I identify strongly with it and
will do whatever I can do to help those wonderful guys, but I strongly
feel that this light hearted attitude to such serious subjects in fact
takes the rest of the Indian community for granted.

My own personal take is let this opportunity go. Let us have
WikiConferences 2012 and 2013 and bid instead for Wikimania 2014 and
that year we should not have a WikiConference. 2013 is too early. The
need of the hour is building strong Indian wikipedias and communities
not hosting foreigners.

Warm regards,

Ashwin Baindur

2012-01-23 Thread Pradeep Mohandas
hi,

If I understand it correctly, the Mumbai bid has been left as a
placeholder bid from India. If such a placeholder bid is not needed,
we'd like to initiate discussions on the Mumbai list on the status of
our bid and make the appropriate announcement on the Mumbai
community's decision on the same. We have not initiated this
discussion so far but I think it is one that me started on the Mumbai
list. Will let everyone know.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Foundation-l] REMINDER: Wikimania 2013 - invitation to bid

2012-01-23 Thread CherianTinu Abraham
I strongly concur with the most of the thoughts of Ashwin below.

The need of the hour is the build the strong Indian Wikipedias and
Wiki-communities within India.
IMHO, We are too early to host a Wikimania in India. While we had a
successful Wikiconference Mumbai, I think we all agree that we were still
short of lot of hands and infrastructure.
Based on my experiences of attending previous Wikimanias, I can say that
the standards should be much high, when you are hosting a Wikimania, where
more than 500+ international delegates attend. ( Except yea, in Gdansk ;) )

My personal suggestion is that we withdraw the bids for Delhi / Mumbai for
Wikimania 2013. We should a host a few more Wiki-Conferences at different
cities in India annually, till we are mature enough for a Wikimania ( may
be in 2014-16). Also, there is no need of a national Wikiconference on the
same year we are hosting a Wikimania.

Tinu Cherian

hi,

I missed this line in my last email: I concurr with what Ashwin has said.

I think we must aim towards making WikiConference India as good as and
perhaps better than Wikimania before we seriously put in a bid for
Wikimania.

[Wikimediaindia-l] FW: [Wikimedia-in-mum] Wikimania 2013 bid

2012-01-23 Thread wheredevelsdare

Forwarding a thread from the Mumbai list, relevant to a similar
discussion on this list. In a nutshell, this matter was discussed at the
recent Mumbai Meetup and the local community feels that it should
concentrate more on smaller local events in the short-term to build on
grassroots rather than take up such a large undertaking like Wikimania at this
point in time.

I like Nikita's idea i think we should try and build the smaller event to build
the visibility for more volunteers, then pitch for Wikimania.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikimedia-in-del] [Foundation-l] REMINDER: Wikimania 2013 - invitation to bid

2012-01-23 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Thank you all for your responses.

Thanks Pradeep for telling us that the bid was a placeholder bid. I
was not aware of that. Placing the placeholder was indeed a good
action, though of course, it would have been better if wider publicity
of placeholder being placed were given.

I'm personally happy to see Mumbai opting to build up local community
activities which it missed out last year due to their full and
tremendous commitment to WikiConference 2011. Mumbai Community has
been doing great events and they have a wonderful line up including
GLAM.

I'm of the opinion that the Delhi bid be discarded prima facie and as
Mumbai has clarified its stance, Arjuna Rao Chawala, as Chapter head
may like to confirm India's non-participation in contesting for
hosting Wikimania 2013.

Of course, if there are dissenting opinions please pitch in right away
as it may seem that I'm trying to rush through with this issue, which
is not the case.

Warm regards,

Ashwin Baindur

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikimedia-in-del] [Foundation-l] REMINDER: Wikimania 2013 - invitation to bid

2012-01-23 Thread Adethya Sudarsanan
Dear All,

It almost took me quite sometime to go through the mailers above.

I honestly go by what Ashwin says. I pretty much understand that India,
needs more local events to establish itself inside the country and then we
can aim to bring in Wikimania's.

If I may make a suggestion, I would like to say that, in future, the events
we organize can be aimed to conduct a Wikimania in India soil. Lets all
together aspire to create events which will ultimately make us ready to
organize a Wikimania in India.

I suggest we pitch in some SME (Subject Matter Experts) from different
industries and try to involve them in working with wikipedia as editors.
For E.g. we can have some one from IT companies to work on the technical
content placed in Wikipedia.. similarly ppl from varied industries can
involve themselves... we can also conduct local events centralized with the
industries... by doing so, we get more volunteers to participate and help
in team building :) in a year or two, this practice will make us sufficient
enough to conduct Wikimania's

Lets make Wikimania as an ultimate destination to reach and the local
events we organize (like GLAM, Workshops) etc can be minor milestones we
wish to reach.

Regards,
Ade.

As far as I know none of the Wiki communities of India (either language or

let us concentrate on building communities and let us gain confidence by
doing some good regional and language specific conferences.

2012-01-23 Thread Noopur
Just a small suggestion/food for thought: Mostly in events like Wikimania
or others that bring together content experts, the organizing bit is
outsourced to experienced event managers who work in collaboration and
understand the needs of the community. I think we should consider getting
someone like that (like Netra and Moksh helped) who can help figure out
formative logistics before any event is declared. That could be a useful
starting point.

Not in totality. What can be outsourced are things like food / hotels /
logistics etc.

Its *WIKIPEDIANS* who have to do a whole lot of things from scholarships to
programs to PR to finances to editing wiki pages(If you see wikimania's
have a wiki for itself) to a whole lot of things which cannot be
outsourced. WCI showed us how we were incredibly short of hands in each of
these things. For the sake of calling it community conference, things
*have* to be done by the *community*. If we dont feel like we have the
community, we must be content with what we do and not aim at events which
are way out of reach.

-1 for any wikimania bid from India till 2014.

2012-01-23 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi
+1 with Logic and I don't think India needs to host an international event,
a more structured community building exercise from foundation, chapter,
existing Wikipedians is going on and it will take some time for a proper
community. Putting a bid and conducting an event physically are things of 2
different spheres. No matter how well programs were arranged, there were
basic issues including Wi-Fi/Food and lot more and we can't blame the OC.
Their voluntary effort is to be appreciated and communication/logistics
problems all happened because of lack of participation. A small group of
volunteers did well, but, the similar things/worse things are going to
happen when majority of the delegates will be from all different countries.

-1 withthe bid!

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia Takes Mumbai 2012

2012-01-23 Thread Anshuman Fotedar
Hi everyone

As was discussed in the Mumbai Meetup #14 on the 15th of this month, we are
organising WIkipedia Takes Mumbai 2012 on the 28th, which is the coming
Saturday.

Wiki page for the event: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WTMUM2
Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/wikitakesmumbai
Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/301044829930784/

List of places we want to cover:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1B_5CneXRV5n1BV4lOtbEGVy-PeTduATRYn-blNbU7n4/edit?pli=1

We have 3 routes in mind:
1) Western: http://g.co/maps/8udzv
2) South A: http://g.co/maps/m4hx2
3) South B: http://g.co/maps/z9atv

We would love to get suggestions on the places/routes and any advice that
might help going forward.

Also we'd be glad if more volunteers come forward for the same. We can
definitely use more hands :)

Currently myself, Nikita Belavate and Karthik Nadar are working on this,
with the aid of mentoring from Pranav Curumsey, Moksh Juneja and Noopur
Raval.

Thanks and Regards
Anshuman Fotedar
