[Wikimediaindia-l] Autobiography of Mahatma Gandhiji is added to Gujarati Wikisource

Dear All,

On behalf the Gujarati community, I wanted to share a nice update.  On 22nd
April, Gujarati Wikisource reached a major milestone with the completion
of " સત્યના પ્રયોગો અથવા
આત્મકથા"
(Saty Naa Prayogo Athavaa Aatmakathaa)  It is the Autobiography of Mahatma
Gandhi (The story of my experiments with
truth).
 This book has 454 pages in 169 chapters in 5 sections.

The work to digitize this book was started less than 1 month before.

The following Gujarati wiki librarians contributed to this project.

   1. સુશાંત સાવલા (Sushant Savla)
   2. ધવલ વ્યાસ (Dhaval Vyas)
   3. vyom25 (Vyom)
   4. સતિષ પટેલ (Satish Chandra)
   5. જેઠાભાઇ ઓડેદરા (Jethabhai Odedara)
   6. અશોક મોઢવાડીયા (Ashok Modhavadia - Captain)
   7. jaishree
   8. Roopal Mehta
   9. સંજય બાલોતિયા (Sanjay Balotia)
   10. જીતેન્દ્રસિંહ (Jinedrasinh)
   11. નિલેશ બંધીયા (Nilesha Bandhia)
   12. Findjigar
   13. દેવેન્દ્રસિંહ ગોહિલ (Devendrasinh Gohil)

To me, this is actually the biggest part of this story!  *13
wikilibrarians*from all over the world collaborated on this! That is
amazing for
a relatively new community.

I would like to acknowledge the contributions of Ashok Modhavadia from
Junagadh for managing the project, and for Sushant Savla and Dhaval Vyas
for being inspirations behind it.  Incidentally, Ashok managed the scanning
of all the pages, the allotment of chapters, and all other aspects of
project management.

just wanted a clarification. This is very important! Have you checked
each word for correctness against the original text? Or is it OCR'd
text?

Thanks Ashwin,

Not only this book, but the other one that is completed and the one
underway, are all proof read against original. These are all manually typed
and not OCR'd. Thanks to the lack of available OCR Tool/software for indic
scripts.

If you or anybody else here is aware of good and reliable tool for Indic,
especially Gujarati, script please share. That will help us upload book in
remarkably less time than it has taken.

That is really very good to hear. We must maintain the highest
standards in all things WikiSource. Unlike Wikipedia, errors cannot be
allowed to co-exist. Well done to all Gujarati Wiki-Source-ians. Keep
yup your great work.

I request that this book may be please be got "officially" released to
gain publicity and attention to Gujarati WikiSource & the community.

Thanks once again Ashwin,

I have been considering to release the books officially, but unfortunately,
PDF conversion is not working with Gujarati. The bug is filed a while ago,
and I have been told that it may get quite a long time to fix the issue.
Without having capability of exporting the page as PDF or preparing a book,
I won't really feel to rush for the book release.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedians work for personal satisfaction, not politics or personal gain

Hi - 

I was simply stating my observation that the Malayalam community seems to be a 
great group doing great work like many in our community. I like the fact that 
they don't seem to be locked up in some of the politics/disputes that happen 
elsewhere in the Wikimedia community around the world. That's all.  

More broadly, I had a terrific visit! I had very productive discussions and 
learned a lot with the Malayalam community at their conference. We had a great 
meetup in Bangalore on Sunday where we discussed several projects including 
Kannada, Telugu and Sanskrit.  I had a good meeting with Arjuna  on Saturday 
and then Hisham and I had a good lunch with Arjuna and Arum on moving forward 
with opportunities for collaboration between the chapter and India Program.  I 
also had a good day with the India Program team in Delhi on their current and 
upcoming work plans. Finally, Hisham and I were invited to meet with the Board 
of Trustees of the Centre for Internet & Society in Bangalore and we had a good 
discussion with Sunil Abraham, their Executive Director. Needless to say, I got 
very little sleep jumping around the country and am quite exhausted at the 
moment, but it was worth the hectic travel. 

Many thanks to the ML community for inviting me to Kollam (I'll definitely be 
back to see more of Kerala), to those who came to the Bangalore meetup, to CIS, 
the India Program team and to Arjuna and Arun for a good discussion (and for 
buying lunch).

On behalf of the Wikimania 2013[0] selection Jury[1], I can announce
that we have awarded the conference to Hong Kong. Congratulations to
the bidding team, and to the London team who also did a particularly
excellent job.

There were five official bids: Bristol, Naples and Surakarta, as well
as the two finalists of Hong Kong and London[2]. The Jury and the
bidding teams discussed them in three public IRC meetings in April. We
determined that Hong Kong and London were the strongest contenders,
and decided to focus on these two as the finalists. After further
e-mail enquiries, and considering evaluation by Wikimedia Foundation
staff, a final, private meeting was held to reach a final decision.

The Jury was pleased by the high quality in both the final bids, and
required over three hours' discussion to reach the final verdict. We
considered each bid according to the criteria[3], focussing on
following factors: Venue, Program, Geo-location & Logistics, Local
Opportunities, Accommodations, Team & Chapter, and Budget & Finances.
We found consensus that the Hong Kong bid was the stronger, especially
because of their strong advance planning; solid support by the local
Wikimedia Chapter, the community, local government, and a partner
organisation that is experienced in planning conferences; and their
good combination of venue and accommodation.

The Jury has confidence that the Hong Kong bidding team will pull off
a magnificent Wikimania, and we are pleased for our global community
to return to Asia once again. With a motivated group of volunteers who
have experience in organizing smaller Wikimedia activities, and a
partner with experience in organizing larger-scale events, they have
found a good mix to create a successful conference. The Jury did also
identify some weaker points in each the bids, and will be happy to
share those privately with the teams so that the Hong Kong team can
use that to their advantage in organizing Wikimania 2013, and the
other teams can use the feedback to improve their bids for a future
year.

We thank all candidate teams - the process is gruelling and requires a
very substantial time investment. They are all to be commended for
their submissions.

To use this soap-box for a moment, as Moderator I would like to remind
the community that we hope that this time was the last that we use
this ad-hoc process to decide on the Wikimania venue, and encourage
everyone to engage with the discussion on Meta[4] about how we might
select Wikimania 2014 and beyond in a more open, community-led way.
Please, do join in the discussions.

You can create PDF via export to Open document type format and then
reworking in Libreoffice Writer.

I have done such a thing for the introductory book on Ubuntu in
Telugu.from
Wikibooks. Here is a
presentationon
how it was done.

John, this is related to the PDF export option in Wiki. The current
solution  won't support Indic scripts.  There are several bugs related to
this. One is this. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28206


An alternate solution (not a good solution) is using LibreOffice by copying
text and format the text outside wiki. But I hope a solution will come as
we move forward. I know Santhosh was working on this earlier. Do not know
its status now.
