Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] women and technology

2013-03-12 Thread Nikita Belavate
Dear Rohini,

The problem is common for all newbies. It seems to have been interpreted in
this manner in the context of the workshop.
As per statistics, there are only 9% women in Wikipedia and the count is
similar for other FOSS projects as well. So the underlying message is to
a. ensure that more women participate and
b. make all newbie editors/contributors feel comfortable

Hi Ansuman, your point about opening new ways is well-taken. It is the
wiki community that has identified a gender gap, so to think of ways of
dealing with it is not to show gender bias.

 Thanks for the support.

Hi, I am sorry. I din't mean to make it a gender bias. I totally
understand your point and I think you are right.

I just thought, that way it could help. Still I think as per Gender Gap
Campaign, if we discuss and make it a point on the guidelines that as we
are trying to have more female wikipedians, be nice to new editors.

I understand the review process should not be based on the gender. And I
am not saying identifying female editors is the solution, but if they wish
 to reveal (e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Female_Wikipedians),
the community should think of something, which could help.

I am not deciding anything for them. I am trying to open new ways which
 could help.

 Thanks

 Hi Ansuman,
The gender gap link provides useful information about the kinds of
projects people are working on. Thanks for pointing it out.

Not sure about the need to identify female editors. Increasing relevant
and gender-sensitive content whether in the Indian languages or in English
could be a task for all of us.

And yes, be nice to all newbies!

Having read this, I think you girls should start a RFC on English
Wikipedia highlighting this issue, and may be many would agree to have a
point added to WP:Deletion Policy (
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_policy) or at least at
Wikipedia:NPP#Be nice to the newbies (
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:NPP#Be_nice_to_the_newbies) and
even Wikipedia:Please do not bite the newcomers

Also you may raise this issue at
 http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Gender_gap. It's a possibility others
may have been raised this issue already, and you can join the discussion.

Many new comers work at WP:NPP and there is no way to recognize female
editors on Wiki unless they mentioned it on their userpages. And they don't
 visit userpages.

A solution could be to add a new gadget like markAdmins, which works
 like this

 http://en.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q6636985curid=6466221action=history

I don't know if it is possible technically.
But if we could add a similar gadget and if they like to reveal their
 gender, then it'd be easy.

Just my thought, many would find it extra burden. But you may go ahead
 and give it a try.

Thanks for sharing this Tejaswini. Made interesting read. Good to see
 wikipedians mentioned in the article.

Interesting to note the article mention the following...

*When at the workshop, the girls began to create articles on Wiki, male
editors were quick to pull them down. “This can be intimidating for
anyone, and more so for girls.” Instead of spending the time creating a
template to delete, she wishes her male friends would just “be more
supportive” and encourage those who step in to what is surely a
 male-dominated world of code.

Makes me wonder if it is to be deemed as the case of male editors
pulling the pages down. Or is it the case of experienced editors being
less tolerant and not encouraging to most new editors irrespective of
their gender. I believe it more often than not the second.

To share another incident to illustrate the point. There was
 another Women's Wikipedia
 workshophttp://wiki.wikimedia.in/Wikipedia_Women%27s_Workshop_Bangalore_2013running
in town wikipedian Omshivaprakash was working with a new lady
editor to take her through the paces of a new article title Nalini
 Nayak http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nalini_Nayak. This was being
shown on a projector for the rest of the lady participants to watch and
learn. And lo and behold we had an editor for nowhere slap a Speedy
Delete notice on a page that had no grounds for it. At best one could
Afd-ed it and have questioned the merits of noteability.

We all know the treatment of new editors... they have a rough time

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki-recruitment ad - Volunteer coordinator for Women gender issues Task Force of WikiProject India

2013-03-12 Thread Ashwin Baindur
The page on Women gender issues Task Force of WikiProject India was
created in Feb 2012. Thanks to a few editors, this page is now start
class ;) rather than stub.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_India/Women_and_gender_issues

This is an appropriate time to request all those WikiProject India members
who participated in the Women's Day editathon to kindly enlist for this
task force.

We are also looking for a Volunteer coordinator (feminine volunteer
preferable) as the first volunteer coordinator for this task Force. The
volunteer coordinator's job is to coordinate editing efforts, encourage
editors and carry out housekeeping and general tender loving care of the
articles under the aegis of the task force.

The current list of articles under the TF can be found here :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:WikiProject_Indian_women_and_gender_issues_articles

Needless to say, we expect the volunteer coordinator to cooperate with
Rohini Lakshane, the newly elected SIG of the Women's Issues for the Wikimedia
India chapter.

One may volunteer for this post by replying on this thread. Hoping to find
many members enlisting for the TF and volunteers for the post of
coordinator!

Warm regards,

AshLin

[Wikimediaindia-l] to Bangalore based members

2013-03-12 Thread Sowmyan Tirumurti
As I had mentioned earlier, Patricia Pena from the Global Fund Raising team

experiences in the donation process.

Any one who wishes to talk to her for providing feedback on the appeal,
process, etc and or make an online contribution in front of her can take an
appointment and meet her. The idea is to not only hear your feedback, but
also observe --where possible-- a demonstration of the online contribution
process.

The following time slots have been taken.

10:30 AM to 12 AM
2 PM to 3 PM
4 PM to 5 PM

Pls let me know your convenience to meet her at CIS office (/ WMIN Chapter
address) no 194, 2nd C Cross, Dommaluru 2nd Stage, Bangalore - 560 071, at
Bangalore. Today is the last day of Pena's stay in Bangalore.

Kindly call me with the time slot you desire today.
