Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Announcing Phase 1 of Wiki Loves Food
Hello WMIN WLF team, I suggest you to involve people from other communities who have organized such events earlier. I can help you with few names. Ravishankar from Tamil Community Naveen Francis and Kartik Nadar from Wiki Loves Monument. Shantanu Chandra from Bengali Community. Biswarup Ganguly who has 25000 plus edits on Commons. *I also suggest everyone to not entertain people like Srikanth on this list. * Srikanth has no interest in Wikimedia India Chapter and that's why he resigned from the EC. He left the chapter in crisis. I still remember the thread WMIN EC in Minority which Srikanth started on the mailing list. (You can check the archives and you'll get to know what I'm talking about) He along with his 2 friends (also Ex EC members) strategically stepped down from the EC on the face of the previous elections and wanted to dissolve the WMIN Chapter. Thanks to people like Viswa, Sudhanwa, Jayanta, Ekbal Nikita who saved the chapter at that time. Good luck for the event. I'd certainly like to use {citation needed} here, but let's give it a pass for now ;) I do recollect how Wikipedia helped protest against SOPA and PIPA. I think this kind of protest will help the maximum community of Netizens as whole. Also, as Indian Wikipedians, we would grab some eyballs which would have impact on contributions to Wikimedia projects as well. Firstly, SOPA/PIPA is not equal to net neutrality debate going on in India. Secondly, sopa/pipa was for the US where WMF is registered and run the servers from. And grab some eyeballs is certainly not a justification to run site wide banners misguiding people. What sort of impact on contributions are you even suggesting of getting out from this? Do you even have any statistics on the rise of number of contributions on Wikimedia projects after sopa blackout? I think Wikipedia, especially the English community should initiate a discussion on how the community and contribute to create an impact in India. Sure, allow the internet to penetrate the Indian market. Please note: Wikipedia Zero and Airtel Zero (just as an example) is all together a different concept; where the first focuses on on giving educational right to individuals and later to promote business of their partners by various means (speeding their partners site, slowing down competitors site and so on). I certainly need citation here, which telecom company has slowed down the competitors site? If they want to speed their partners site, they certainly could, because its their private property. Also these providers fear the impact of loosing a customer segment if they start fast laning select sites and services only. Just imagine a day a paid encyclopedia loads faster in all ISPs then Wikipedia. Do we want to see such a day? Seriously? Wikipedia is where it is today because of the successful disruptive model, everyone (I assume) knows this! Can you even name one encyclopedia and one isp who would even think to implement what you wrote above? If any telecom company even did so, they sure would be running out of business. Hi Arnav, Thanks for your inputs. I just shared my points and just wanted to know what all are thinking about the same. Would just like to defend my point as I have not explained it properly (again my own views): By grabbing eyeballs, its not only about to increase editors, its also about readership. Yohann, apologies if I've offended you. I'm not accusing the Pune community. Do remember, I'm also part of the Pune community now. Since this person chose to generalise things, I also chose to generalise as such open trolling and blatant mudslinging happened when the Pune Club was mentioned back in 2013. However, the past is the past. My only point is, such trolls should not be encouraged. This said user is the same user who says people like me should not be entertained. I've been part of this list since 2008, a time, when quite a lot of people here did not even know what the Edit Button was. The same user in the past has made scathing remarks against me and Moksh: Dear Moksh! You have a 3 months baby which means you were already execpting a child a year ago. It was not a natural calaminity or something like that which occured suddenly. Having 3 months old baby is just a fake reason behind your resignation. I haven't seen any work or activity done by you or your EC in your tenure till date. Regards, Jayantilal. here https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/2014-September/011624.html If such users come to this public list to blast hard working users [yes, I consider myself hard working as far as Wiki is concerned, both offline and online], then there is no need for them to be here. Our contributions speak volumes for themselves, and mine, be it on en.wikipedia, commons, or wikidata speak more than some anonymous troll who sends out a mail with a singular +1 attached to it. Apologies for the whole Pune thing. That was wrong for me to have said. However, I repeat, such trolls need to be blocked if the sanity and quality of this mailing list it to be maintained. +1 Rohini. I think all points raised by Srikanth and everyone is valid on Wiki Loves Food discussion thread. Srikanth was not the only one, it included me, Sudanwa, Dhaval. All of them were just curious and want to see all goes well before the contest goes live. No one should have rights to say to the community to ignore someone's queries raised because (it has) some emotions that some one has taken so much of time and efforts to understand what exactly is happening and by asking, he would alert is there needs any correction. Hi Jayantilal, Your suggestions are valid but not your accusations. Please note that every board member who have served the board will deserve a great salute from me for spending their volunteer time and so Srikanth does. I'm sure the current EC will also agree though its been just 4-5 months. It's not a easy task. Also note that Srikanth has given some splendid contributions to the movement. He is that person who will just walk for whole day on road to upload toll and images on buses to Commons. Everyone has right to quit as well for their own reasons with the approval of the board. I think as now we have a new board, its time to support them and the movement in India.
