Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia India members

2019-04-05 Thread Krishna Chaitanya Velaga
Hi Yohann,

Thanks for the response.

I agree with Ashwin, though it is not mandated by the by-laws, it can be
done in respect of general interest. Also, I don't think there should be
privacy concerns if you are just mentioning the membership ID and the
person's name. Since these lists are anyways published during the
elections, it is no harm to keep a *lively* list of members.

Also personally, it would be great to have their respective Wikimedia
usernames if possible (or only membership numbers and usernames can also be
good if revealing real names is a privacy concern). It is actually even
better than real names. It solves the privacy thing, and also since WMIN is
a Wikimedia affiliate, it would be good to see who have the voting rights
during elections. Generally, almost all the major elections (board,
stewards, RfAs, ArbCom etc.) require the users to have a minimum edit count
(300 global edits, and 50 global edits in the last 12 months, if I am not
mistaken) to be eligible to vote. I feel that this count is very reasonable
to count to ask for, to make sure that the voters have knowledge of
Wikimedia. It doesn't feel right to let non-Wikimedians to vote, because
they may not have an idea of how the Wikimedia works. It is good to have
such rules even for candidates.

This is my personal opinion and would like to hear other community members'
thoughts on this.

Regards,
Krishna

Dear Yohann,

I do understand that you may not want to make the list publicly available
but most organisations have lists of members which are made available to
them. By claiming it's not in the article of memorandum is absurd. We are
not the Freemasons or a secret society that this kind of reply is being
made. Common sense says that articles of memorandum cannot lay down
everything that is to be done or to say that since it's not in the
memorandum, it should not be expected. This kind of reply, though you are
trying to be helpful instead comes across as if that someone knowing who is
a member of chapter is a secret thing. This fortress mentality makes it
look like you have things to hide. Just because a chapter is registered
under some body or the other doesn't mean that the members are to be kept
in the dark about almost everything.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia India members

2019-04-05 Thread Yohann Thomas
Dear one & all

I would like to thank you for taking out time out of your busy schedules &
getting involved in the affairs of the chapters, members or otherwise.
Having said that, I would also invite you & everyone else to fill up
Wikimedia Chapter(India) membership forms available in this link along
with FAQs(http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Membership-FAQ). Also, pls email to
chap...@wikimedia.in , in case of any queries.

Wikimedia Chapter(India) which is registered under Karnataka Societies Act,
1960 is governed by rules, procedures, legislations and jurisdictions
within the Republic of India.

Wikimedia Chapter(India) submits its annual report to the registrar office
for the Karnataka society every financial year beginning 1st April till
31st March. Wikimedia Chapter(India) also submits a copy of the report to
Wikimedia Foundation(WMF), San Francisco, United States of America (USA) as
per the Chapter Agreement. Wikimedia Chapter(India) is the national
affiliate for WMF in India.

Based on Election rules & Precedence, Wikimedia Chapter(India) releases the
list of names for all its then members along with their Membership no ,so
that it becomes convenient for the members who are not in Bangalore, to
cast their postal ballots.

In my previously mentioned annual reports , the no. of members & their
geographic distribution is released every financial year. Having said that
Wikimedia Chapter(India) would be happy to hear on further suggestions from
its members and also the larger Indian community on the topic of
membership. I feel that I should remind the community that , since the
Wikimedia Chapter(India) has no staff, it will take time for updating
membership records, since many membership forms are directly sent to our
Office to Bangalore.

Even though, it is nowhere mentioned in our Memorandum of Association (MoA)
about publishing & updating information of our members on a regular basis,
Wikimedia Chapter(India) may require to inform its members beforehand while
they apply for membership, on disclosing their personal information as per
requirement.

I have shared a link, where i am inviting all community members to discuss
& give suggestions to the Wikimedia Chapter, on how to further improve the
membership process.
