[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia - Cochrane Symposium

2014-09-08 Thread Abhijith Jayanthi
Dear All,

I'm happy to share with you that '22nd Cochrane Colloquium', an annual
celebration of Cochrane Collaboration is going to take place in Hyderabad this
year. Cochrane Collaboration is an independent, non-for profit, international
organisation. It helps provide evidence-based, relevant, systematic, up-to-date
reviews to people on health which is widely referred by
healthcare-professionals, patients and general public.

Last year in the Colloquium, there were nearly 2000 scientists from around the
world in Quebec where Cochrane and Wikipedia initiated a partnership to
populate Wikipedia articles with evidence from Systematic Reviews. This
partnership was initiated on the Wikipedia front by Dr. James and his team of
Wiki Project Med Foundation. As a part of it there has been appointment of
Sydney Poore as a Wikipedian-In-Residence. For more. The Colloquium is going to
happen from 21st - 26th September this year.

A Pre-colloquium Symposium 'Wikipedia and Cochrane' is planned on 21st Sept.
Cochrane Collaboration has offered free entries for upto 50 Wikipedians to this
session!

Cochrane has also allotted two slots for Wikpedia Workshops in addition to a
Wikipedia Booth during the colloquium. Details are here:

Hello,

I read that Wikimedia India does not accept member who are not Indian nationals.
This comes as a big surprise, and I don't see any reason for it.
As far as I know, membership in a non-profit in India is not limited to Indian
nationals.

A change whould be most welcomed.

Thanks,

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia India Chapter: FDC Proposal Review Request

2013-09-24 Thread Abhijith Jayanthi
Hi All,

I sense the budget is little beyond the line. I understand the tentative events
planned will mean an aggressive growth plan, but do we have the resources to
handle it?
More so, can someone explain the status of our FCRA and how exactly is the fund
routed into our account? An amount of this magnitude will need a reflection of
our previous spend/ failing which we will attract unnecessary scrutiny. This
will mean we will need to have full-time support staff - additional expense.
For Wikimania, I support and wish to see a transparent call for interests and a
due process for selection of travel/scholarship awards: more Indian
representation at Wikimania is worthy and called for. For a national
conference/4 regional conferences - I understand it will be an overstretch, it
is best to have a single conference, through rotation in different cities every
year to ensure good participation in the long run. Most of the attendees are
volunteers, 5 conferences in total is a bit heavy on schedule.

There is a very serious amount of money being spent on bureaucratic necessities
indeed very little on community activities.

For example, why do 6 people need to go for Wikimania Chapters conference?

You have asked for money for 3 regional 1 national conference. Does anyone
actually believe that the Chapter has the wherewithal to organise/conduct 4
conferences in a year? Add to that x number of academies one devcamp. Plus a
whopping Rs 6 lakhs for Wiki Loves India/Monuments.

There are also a huge grey areas - Event Participation, Unspecified general
events.

The amt 150,000 $ is not at all small. This is an extravagant budget and needs
pruning down in the issues mentioned above more allocation to activities
communities. My suggestion is to keep it much smaller but doable. Such huge
amts demanded without any clear cut idea of whats to happen will only lead to
non-utilisation at best misuse at worst. Dont bite off more than you can chew!

Except for allocation for Innovative projects, GLAM acdtivities and

item that directly sustains any measurable impact on the growth of language
communities. Even this fund allocation will prove miniscule when distributed
for all the language communities.

I strongly recommend to extend the budget proposal to make use of the full
$200,000 that you proposed in your letter of intent and allocate a good budget
for language communities and special interest groups.

Hi all,

After last year, I was thrilled to see the huge participation of Indian
people in Wiki Loves Monuments! The huge amount of pictures and new users
(from the top of my head, more than 2000 participants from India alone,
ranking it with distance above all other countries) was unique, but also was
the huge enthusiasm of those people. It clearly showed how proud Indians are
of their cultural heritage. Of course this was perhaps best illustrated by
having 2 (!) Indian pictures in the top-10 of the world best monument
photos.

For 2013, I hope that there will be another Indian contest, but that doesn't
happen all by itself, for that your help is needed. Arnav and Karthik have
requested your help (I'm not sure if you've seen it though), and I think
that without some help, it would be very hard to organize the contest. I'm
not 100% sure if the board of Wikimedia India has already committed itself
to organizing the contest (and making available the necessary budget for
prizes etc), but I'm confident that if there is enough enthusiasm, that will
not be a big issue.

So what do you say? Are you willing to help out organizing the Wiki Loves
Monuments photo competition in 2013? Worl that needs to be done includes
on-wiki work (tidying up the monument lists, adding information such as
coordinates, categorizing and checking images as they come in etc - quite
boring but you can do it whenever and where ever you like) but also a bit
more organizational: setting procedures for judging, helping find suitable
jury members, sponsors, translating the website and interfaces, doing some
PR for the contest, finding government and NGO-partners for the contest in
India etc.

You have a wonderful base to work from, I sincerely hope some volunteers
will pick up the challenge and beat last year's contribution!

Looking forward to many more Taj Mahal pictures,

Lodewijk Gelauff (member of the international coordinating team)

After (virtually) helping Karthik in WLM 2012 and seeing other countries
expressing their interest to participate in WLM '13, I request Indian
Community interested in helping organize WLM '13 to start planning and

If anyone is interested to help, please get in touch with Karthik or me so
that we can start planning for India's successful participation in WLM '13.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia Hyderabad Meetup with CIS A2K Programme Director Mr. Vishnu : Minutes of Meeting

2013-02-15 Thread Abhijith Jayanthi
Hi All,

The following are the minutes of the meeting:

*In Attendance: *
Mr. Vishnu - CIS A2K Programme Director
Mr. Abhijith Jayanthi
Mr. Rahimanuddin Shaik
Dr. Rajasekhar
Mr. Tausif
Mr. Sai Anudeep
Ms. Akhila Thumma
Mr. Veera Venkata Chowdary (User: Veevan)

*Minutes of Meeting:*

(1) The meeting opened with a round of introductions about self and then
Mr. Vishnu introduced CIS and A2K Programme - little history and his
proposed ideas for shaping up the future course of the Programme and open
up for discussions. The summary of the presentation and
comments/suggestions that followed as indicated below:

*Summary*
(1) Greater Coordination is envisaged between CIS/ India Chapter + SIGs and
the Wiki Community at large

(2) Volunteering efforts of Wiki Community (snow balls) and the engagement
needs to be better utilized with the support of CIS (positioning the start
point for the snow ball to start rolling) so that impact is better
captured.

*Suggestions/Comments*
Two approaches to volunteer engagement were suggested - merits/demerits
need to be evaluated and are indicated below

(a) Recognition in terms of participation certificates/ appreciation
letters and setting an hierarchy of achievement will motivate the
volunteers and engage them better.

(b) Wiki Volunteering should stem out of passion for knowledge and should
be structured on a ''No - Expectations-in-Return Model

(3) Mr. Vishnu gave an update on the institutions in Hyderabad that he is
trying to connect with (initial level)

(4) Few proposals were discussed as part of the initiative:

(a) Engaging on a Mobile Model for Wiki Academies: With volunteers and SIGs
taking active role in engaging on a small-groups/local setup structures -
making Wiki Academy a more sustained dialogue rather than touch and go
activity (one day engagements); move towards a longer engagement pattern

(b) WikiRTI#: A platform/initiative was discussed and received support from
everyone present - to create a repository for anyone to upload RTI
responses and thus move towards a general archive/knowledge bank schematic.

# Mr. Tausif and Mr. Abhijith will be coordinating on creating a template
design for this platform - anyone who is interested and wants to be part of
this activity may contact Mr. Abhijith at abhij...@wikimedia.in

(5) Mr. Vishnu proposed a tentative plan to engage a staff member based out
of Hyderabad to roll-out activities in Hyderabad and around the state of
Andhra Pradesh; proposal for which is expected to be discussed before
taking forward. Mr. Abhijith expressed interest to make a necessary
donation for the same post finalization

The meeting concluded with all the participants seeking to have a greater
engagement with A2K Team in Hyderabad involving various languages.

regards
Abhijith

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] why to donate

2013-02-12 Thread Abhijith Jayanthi
Guys,

I understand this might be a serious issue, but I trust all India mailing list
is definitely not the platform for discussion. Please continue this
conversation privately, also - wanted to check on couple of points:

(1) Do we have a policy of permitted issues to be discussed over the all India
Mailing list - if not, there is a necessity to work on it.
(2) Disclosures and grievance handling procedures should be shared with each
member upon joining and the mechanism should be followed.

Again, pointing fingers or rephrasing the issue itself is not the solution - we
will have to move beyond the question to get the answer.

Grant requests are always on public wiki and the numbers are always

It seems you are missing out whole point, I am talking about fixed expenses
and 'possible' activities. Like Board meeting travel expenses. Which can be
covered and are (already) getting covered by third parties like CIS.

So it makes more sense to spend volunteer efforts on outreach kind of
activities than running for money? specially when third parties are
 interested in supporting financially?

When CIS is wrong, there is hard criticism, and when they support
financially - I guess there could be minimum acknowledgement?.
I think CIS may help chapter to cover other expenses also if needed. So
Chapter can focus on productive outreach and activities?
