Thank you.

This body of data is fascinatingly insightful. I should hope the foundation
folks are taking notes. I will ensure I represent this point about the
consequences of social media personally with the greatest intensity I can
gather to the appropriate foundation folks during my next trip to Delhi.

Of course. Of course.

But perhaps an explanation of your very valuable experience on this matter
might help save everyone who is 'working' on these things some time and
effort, no? It would be so helpful of you to do this, so that everyone

I suspect that would help the rest of these guys who are trying to use
social media to recruit more Wikipedians determine whether all of social
media is used only by a bunch of douchebags (who, on finding how awesomely
incredible the community scene is here, will flock to your (and all of our)

OR

that could perhaps help them determine what they should _not_ do, should
they decide that there are indeed _some_ people who are not douchebags

(I know- how unlikely)?

Just a thought.

I'm not sure Inkfruit is even aware the DOM injection campaign is even
happening. Possibly a rogue advertising agency; or perhaps the writer of
the virus is using a regular ad-network's API. I'll wait for Kashyap to
comment though, he may be able to identify which agency/network is running
that specific campaign.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Ads Injected into Wikipedia?

2012-03-11 Thread Aditya Sengupta
A friend got in touch with me about this. He is currently seeing
advertisements on Wikipedia pages (on all pages except the home page). Here
is a link to a screenshot:

http://i.imgur.com/dhKyR.jpg

These advertisements were not visible to him when I asked him to check
through the secure WM server. These advertisements are also not visible to
him on any other web page. To the bottom right of each ad, there is some
text that says, "ads not by this site". I've taken a quick look through the
page source he forwarded, nothing looks untoward. His right-click menu does
not appear when he right-clicks on the ad.

He is based out of Mumbai and ISP is "Tata Teleservices Maharashtra Ltd".
His IP address is 114.143.88.193 (or was, while he accessed this page; I've
since had him change his IP address since I'm sharing this one). I'm not
sure if this issue is restricted to Mumbai; since the IP address shows up
in Pune when I try to geolocate it (though I understand this is fairly
common).

The link he is directed to when he clicks the ad is this:
http://www.inkfruit.com/combo-landing?utm_source=CMP1002Combo&utm_medium=CPM&utm_content=combobanner&utm_campaign=Combo.
I'm adding this here and copying the founder of Inkfruit since the campaign
data in the URL parameters may help identify the problem (also, I'm not
sure if Inkfruit is aware of this campaign).

I've copied my friend here in case there are further questions he could
help answer.

Could this be a case of DPI by his ISP, or simply malware on his machine?
If it were the former, what would be the legal status of the issue?

This is very good advice- and this is precisely what we did at Bombay
House. I engaged the cops while Pranav was on the phone. When Pranav
relayed Bishakha's perspective, that gave us even more confidence to stand
our ground.

A very important thing here is to be firm, but *polite*. Being
confrontational can make things go downhill very fast (I believe they can
arrest you for not cooperating with a police officer). Be as cooperative as
you can (when the police asks you for identification, questions your
background and such), without backing down from your original position.
Steer the conversation towards the issue (and legalities thereof) at hand,
away from your background and motivations. Most important point- Remain
calm and respect the other side- they don't want to have to deal with this
if they can avoid it either. It is surprising how much progress you can
make under such circumstances with a smile on your face. :-)

Finally, concede if you have indeed erred. While photography is rarely
prohibited (except in sensitive government designated areas that are
clearly marked as "Prohibited Area"), the typical offense people are
charged with is trespassing or harassment (thrusting a camera in someone's
face, or not allowing them to walk away). You will find very few legal
restrictions when it comes to photographing things while in a public place
(except when the subject is in an area where they have a reasonable
expectation of privacy- like a public restroom, or using a telephoto lens
from a public space to photograph someone through their window in their
private bedroom). Also remember that (while on public spaces) nobody can
ask you to delete your photographs, or take your camera away. Doing so
would allow you to charge them of coercion and/or theft. A policeman may
seize your camera (if they arrest you, which is unlikely in the first
place), but may not delete your photographs (tampering with evidence). If
you see yourself getting into a confrontation with a private security
guard- as a preemptive measure, call the police first yourself.

Ignore any or all of the above advice if you are being physically harmed.
Focus on personal safety first.

Yes- if there is a yellow board that declares the building as a "Prohibited
Area", you are not allowed to photograph such buildings. We saw quite a few
of these buildings- such as the RBI building. These boards are required to
be registered with the police/government, so it isn't like anyone can put
them up.

Everything else is fair game- as long as you are not trespassing on their
property (which we weren't) or harassing them (we were super nice and
polite with the Bombay House folks as well as the police- so this wasn't a
problem either).

Bishakha and I did a short session at VJTI during the previous edition of
the technical festival. Money never came up.

The kinds of places that are going to ask for money for these specific
activities are the kinds of places you do not want to do these
workshops/sessions at in the first place- a very clear and simple filter.

IITB's Techfest just got over. VJTI's (Mumbai) festival (Technovanza) is
from Feb 3rd to 5th (I can connect here- ping me offline). UDCT's festival
(Exergy) is going on (Jan 19 to 22). Thadomal Sahani has something on 4th
Feb, but this seems to be limited to biomed.

Most other major college tech fests in Mumbai will happen next semester (S
P Jain, D J Sanghvi, etc).

Quite often, it is not clear to them that an entity should not have a page
in the first place; when they put up a page, they often simply copy text
right over from a press release or the client's website; and the sources
used (if at all) are usually first/second party.

Controversial perhaps- but I think it's pretty important they learn the
principles here.

I am aware of quite a few PR and SMM agencies that edit Wikipedia and they
are generally quite unaware about the principles- and end up being a bigger
burden than they would otherwise have been had they known the process ahead
of time.

I welcome this endeavour by P. and Moksh.

I have three suggestions for inclusion here, based on recent experiences:
copyrights/copyvio, notability; and some emphasis on verifiability.

This version of Aakash uses Android- the one that Datawind is making for
the first pilot run (100,000 devices).

The next version of Aakash will *likely* use Android too. There is no
guarantee that Datawind will make that version- the price point will be
determined by a government bidding process and multiple manufacturers (all
those who pass the technical evaluation) will be invited to manufacture and
sell tablets at that price point- on a "rate card contract" system.

There are efforts underway to port Debian to the tablet, as some folks at
the IITs/MHRD aren't too happy with the reliance on Google. The current
version does not have the Android Market- despite talks with Google. This
shouldn't be a problem for Wikipedia-offline for the tablet though, since
that will be FOSS.

Jessie has spoken to the professor from IITB (Kannan Moudgalya) who is on
the standing committee of the National Mission on Education through ICT
(under which the Aakash project, among others, falls). She has also spoken
to the CEO of one of the other manufacturers- Datawind is only one of many
companies that are bidding for this project- they won the bid for the pilot
run. I have not been following this project for the past two weeks or so
(since the WikiConference)- the bidding for the second version of Aakash
was on at the time. I'm not aware of what the current status is. I'll be
visiting IITB during Scipy this weekend, so I'll know more then.

About offline-Wikipedia, work has already commenced on porting Kiwix to
Android (3 weeks ago by Emmanuel, IIRC).

tl;dr: The foundation is talking to folks behind the Aakash tablet.

@Hisham, Jessie: Any updates on getting the sample tablets from the
manufacturer?

I must say I was slightly disappointed at the size of the protest. We heard
the protest begin, we went around asking all attendees standing outside to
enter the convocation hall; by the time we reached the gate from the lawns,
the protesters had already been swept into a police van and were about to
leave.

To be fair, they were far outnumbered by the police.

That said, the Wikimedia page from which they've picked up this info (

of an "account", it only links to the hashtag. The author of the post at

The "Twitter account" mentioned here actually links (in the original

http://twitter.com/#!/search/%23wci11(the search for the hashtag,

To put it another way, it’s possible that the sum of published scholarly
work from Europe is somewhat close to the sum of ‘European’ knowledge, and
that the sum of accessible, published scholarly work in many Asian and
African languages is nowhere close to the corresponding body of knowledge
that circulates among speakers of those languages.

This is quite an interesting challenge. Do you have a blog (or any other
