, you will
find the proposed definition and purpose of Wikimedia hubs: the set-up and
governance process for hubs (which also includes an open question from the
committee), responsibilities, fundraising, and fund dissemination as it
relates to hubs and more.

Hi Tito

You were the first person I met outside my community. You made the
engagements in events and collaboration with fellow wikimedians easier. I
don't have words to express my gratitude for the way you have offered
support to all our projects and initiatives.
The way you have been engaged in community support work is extensive and I
understand how this work can be overwhelming.
Please take care of yourself and all the best for your future endeavours.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] Movement Charter Drafting Committee elections are now open!

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Movement Charter Drafting Committee elections are
now open!
To: Wikimedia Mailing List

Hello everyone,

Voting for the election for the members for the Movement Charter drafting
committee is now open. In total, 70 Wikimedians from around the world are
running for seven seats in these elections.

As recommended by the Movement Strategy recommendations, the goal is to
assemble a Drafting Committee that will draft a Movement Charter to ensure
a common framework for decision making in the Wikimedia movement
.
The committee will consist of 15 members in total: The online communities
vote for 7 members, 6 members will be selected by the Wikimedia affiliates
through a parallel process, and 2 members will be appointed by the
Wikimedia Foundation. The plan is to assemble the committee by November 1,
2021.

Voting is open from October 12 10:00 UTC to October 24, 2021 23:59 (Anywhere
on Earth ).

Learn more about the candidates

Candidates from across the movement have submitted their candidatures. Learn
about each candidate to inform your vote
.
The statements are translated to a number of languages, so you can have
access to the information in many of your preferred languages.

Additionally, we are piloting a so-called “Election Compass
” for this election. Click
yourself through the tool and respond to the 19 statements, and you will
see which candidate is closest to you! The tool is available in ~9
languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Arabic,
Indonesian, Hausa).

Voting

Similar to the previous Board elections, we have chosen Single Transferable
Vote

for the voting system. The benefit of this is voters can rank their choices
in order of preference. Learn more about voting requirements
,
how to vote
,
and frequently asked questions about voting

.

To cast your vote, please go to SecurePoll

.

We also offer two question and answer times, if you have any questions
regarding the Movement Charter and the voting process:w

   -

Wednesday, 19:00 UTC, on Google Meet
   -

Thursday, 13:00 UTC, on Zoom (that’s the Conversation Time with Maggie
   Dennis)

Please write a short message to answ...@wikimedia.org if you want to
participate in one of these.

Please help select people who best fit the needs of the movement at this
time. Vote and spread the word so more people can vote for candidates. Our
aim is to have a committee with Wikimedians that combine the diversity of
the Wikimedia Movement as well as a great mix of competencies.

Best,

Kaarel Vaidla, on behalf of the Movement Strategy & Governance team,

TL;DR: Upvote your favorite Movement Charter Election Compass statements

until October 3rd.

///

Hello everyone,

in roughly 10 days, on October 11, we will start the voting on the
community candidates for the drafting committee that will draft the
Movement Charter. We got 72 candidates running for the committee!

To be able to guide all of you through so many candidacies, we want to
provide a Voting Advice Application. You can find the prototype here on
Toolforge .

Over the last week, we got 110 statements proposed by community members: On
values and principles, on resource allocation, on the charter drafting
process. Thank you very much!

*The next step is now to select 15 to 20 of these statements for the final
advice application -- your turn! *Upvote the statements you would like to
see included in the voting advice application:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Charter/Drafting_Committee/Election_Compass_Statements

You can vote on as many statements as you like, but only one vote per
statement. *Think about which statements you would like to see the
candidates positioning themselves to, which might help you in your
decision-making.* The ~20 statements with the most votes will be selected
and send to the candidates on Monday, October 4th.

All of this is an experiment, we're happy to get feedback!

Best regards
Cornelius

2021-02-17 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Hi

I have some concerns about your criteria of experience. It is only
considering the online activity but is completely ignorant towards the
offline work. Following the information on meta, I wouldn't qualify for
instant registration. I registered earlier, but there might be others
interested but won't meet the criteria requirements. If you are extending
the option of instant registration, it should be open to all wikimedians.

Thanks,

Dear all,

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees has convened an ad hoc committee
on the Movement Brand Project. Three trustees were selected to head its
work, in close collaboration with the Brand team - Raju Narisetti, James
Heilman and myself. Seeking to improve the Brand Project process, we are
looking for community advisors to give input from various Wikimedia
movement perspectives. The goal is to re-launch the brand discussions with
a clear and transparent process in March 2021, and to conclude the
conversations with a decision by the end of the fiscal year (July 2021).

We are writing to you today to ask that you nominate 1 member from your
community to join us as advisors to the Brand Committee.

What will advisors do?

The Brand Committee is charged with developing and proposing changes to the
Movement Brand Project process. The committee will produce a proposal that
the full Board of Trustees will review and hopefully agree to adopt, if
aligned. Advisors will support us in recognizing key stakeholder community
perspectives on branding needs, processes and decision-making. They will
provide input and comments on proposed changes to process and offer working
solutions to challenges the committee encounters. Advisors will be able to
share ideas and ask questions to their communities, as needed. The full
process will be vetted and endorsed by advisors before the Board of
Trustees makes its final decision on adopting these proposed changes to
process and decision-making. After the proposed changes to process and
decision-making are adopted, the new process will be launched in March.

What kind of commitment is needed?

Advisors can expect 6-9 hours of activity a month, in January and February
2021, though we will be aiming to launch the joint process with a first
meeting during the second half of December. There will be opportunities to
join committee meetings with Board members & staff, or to watch recordings
of the meetings and provide feedback asynchronously. Documents and
proposals will be shared among advisors for comment, review and
suggestions.

What kind of advisor is the committee seeking?

The Brand Committee is looking for a small set of advisors who are able to
engage thoughtfully on the importance of branding to the Wikimedia
Movement’s 2030 goals. Advisors will be asked to reflect on more than
processes: they will be asked to think about the strategic goals of the
brand names and logos within the movement, and how to equitably structure
decisions around them. Ideal advisors therefore have experience
representing the movement to the public, as well as understand the internal
needs of the movement’s work as something multidimensional and open.

The number of advisors will be between 7 - 9 people, in an effort to
support active participation within the committee, and to keep the process
on track, to “un-pause” in March. By then we strive for a clear sense of a
process with which the broader community will be able to engage.

We have identified 3 main groups we would like advisors from:

   -

2 advisors from affiliate leadership (Chairpersons or EDs)
   -

2 advisors from the community, specifically, people who participated in
authoring the Community Open Letter on Renaming (COLOR)
   -

2 additional advisors from the global south / emerging and
   underrepresented communities*
   -

   1 advisor from AffCom

Please note:

* As the global south / emerging and underrepresented communities include a
variety of different groups, we are actively approaching Wiki Indaba,
ESEAP, IberoCoop, the India lists and the Brazilian community, asking each
to nominate one advisor (if I have missed a group you believe to qualify,
please let me know privately and I’ll be sure to approach them as well).
Out of all applications from these groups, 2 will be chosen to complement
the other 5 representatives (2 from affiliates, 2 from COLOR, 1 from
AffCom). Our goal would be to choose from groups that are not already
represented by other chosen advisors, with a special effort to be as
diverse and inclusive as possible.

* The committee might also directly invite up to 2 additional advisors, as
it sees fit.

How should advisors be nominated and added to the committee?

The committee is requesti

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] New online learning courses on Building Partnerships and Identifying and Addressing Harassment

2020-12-15 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Hello all,

The Community Development
 team at the
Wikimedia Foundation is launching the WikiLearn (Online Learning Pilot)
, a
capacity-building project. This project will deliver two courses over an
8-week period that will begin on February 1, 2021. Courses are free to take
part in and will be hosted on Moodle . During this
pilot project, each course will be taught, and assignments are to be
prepared, in English. At the end of the pilot, we will be making course
materials available for anyone interested in self-study, and for
translation.

The two courses we will be launching on February 1, 2021, are:

   1.

   Identifying and Addressing Harassment

:
This course will focus on developing skills that will help volunteers
respond to on- and off-wiki harassment.
   -

This course will combine scheduled sessions and independent study.
The weekly commitment of this course is 2-3 hours per week.
  -

Target Audience: Volunteers with administrator or other advanced user
  rights.

   1.

   Partnership Building:

This
intensive course will provide an in-depth curriculum on how to develop
meaningful programmatic and organizational partnerships within the movement
   and with external partners.
   -

This course will consist of scheduled sessions and individual
assignments with a weekly total commitment of up to 6 hours.
  -

Target Audience: Volunteers with intermediate-level experience
contributing to Wikimedia projects and beginner-level experience with
building partners with Non-Wikimedia groups and organizations.

To ensure our small team can provide each learner individual support, we
are limiting each course in this pilot to 40 participants. We ask that all
interested applicants commit to attending weekly for the full course.

All efforts will be made to ensure that scheduled sessions are time-zone
friendly to the greatest number of enrolled participants. However, with the
wide distribution of volunteers, that may not always be possible.

Key Dates:

   -

Applications open Today (December 1, 2020) and will close on January 14,
   2021.
   -

Successful applicants will be notified on January 18, 2021.
   -

The first session for each course will be held on February 1, 2021.

To Take Part in the Online Learning Pilot:

To participate in the Partnership Building online course, fill out this
application form

[Wikimediaindia-l] Women Day edit-a-thon at UNESCO

2020-02-23 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Hello Everyone

I am writing to inform you that the UNESCO New Delhi office is hosting a
Women's Day edit-a-thon on 03rd March 2020. It will be a 2-hour long event
from 11 am to 1 pm. The theme for this year is "Women for change".
Wikimedians from any language community can join this event. The acceptable
number of participants is 20 and considering that this is a celebration of
women's day, preference will be given to females. We all appreciate the
contribution of all the amazing men who have always helped us in bridging
the gender gap but as this is a global day to celebrate the social,
economic, cultural and political achievements of women, we would like more
women to join the edit-a-thon. We would really appreciate everyone joining
us remotely. In case you wish to organize an edit-a-thon on the same theme
that day, please share your interest.
Please reply to this email or contact me directly before *26th February
2020* to submit your interest to be a part of this event.
Note: We will create a Telegram group with interested wikimedians, to
discuss this further.

Thanks & Regards,
Manav

Great initiative. It's been 4 years since we all met and shared

[Wikimediaindia-l] WikiWomenCamp 2020 Community Engagement Survey-2

2020-02-01 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Dear Wikimedians,

I am writing to invite all women (by gender or sex) to participate in
the *Community
Engagement Survey-2* (https://forms.gle/jgrokJf9CwX6iAZU9) for
WikiWomenCamp2020. The intention of this survey is to identify the
respondent's interests and preferences in order to plan the event more
effectively.

After taking consent from the women wikimedians from different groups and
affiliates (Pre-event survey), we are going to submit a grant request to
organize it in the month of October in India. You can find details about
the Camp here- WikiWomenCamp 2020
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiWomenCamp_2020>. Please feel free to
share your ideas, suggestions and help us update the page. We would also
appreciate any kind of support that you may offer to plan and draft the
proposal.

*Note: The survey will be open until 23:59 hrs IST of 10 February 2020.*

* Please ignore if already done.*
Regards,
Manav

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [తెవికీ] Fwd: Updates about Wikimedia Foundation Community brand and marketing coordinator visit to India

2019-04-14 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Hi Gopala

I am sorry but these are working days plus we are being informed at the
last minute where even if we submit our inability or interest to join,
there are very little chances of the submission being considered or any
rescheduling. Before discussing these agenda points with the foundation
members, the community needs to discuss them within the group so that we
all have a basic understanding of what we need to achieve from this
meeting. There are people who are located in different regions of Punjab
and might need some time to plan their visit too. Also, there are people
who are not on the mailing list. This is a very important meeting and like
many other wikimedians, I wish to be a part of it too but because of
prior commitments, I won't be able to attend on 18th April.
We have been involved with the movement for years, contributing online and
planning outreach activities, such meetings are really important for all of
us taking initiatives to take the movement forward.
I agree with everyone and I believe we should have had an online meeting
first and the communities should have been informed a few weeks before the
event.

Regards,
Manavpreet Kaur

[Wikimediaindia-l] Community Health Initiative- User reporting system consultation

2019-03-22 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Hello everyone

This is to bring in your kind notice that during Women Train the Train
Program in Delhi on 9th March 2019, we had a session on Trust and Safety
with Ms. Sydney Poore where she informed us about the different initiatives
planned by the team at WMF to make the Wikimedia a more secure place for
everyone.

On those lines, Community Health Initiative is a combined project that
involves multiple initiatives (designing harassment tools like user
reporting system, etc.) to counter issues and discussions to make them
better. One of these initiatives is forming a user reporting system to make
it easier for people experiencing harassment and other forms of abuse to
provide accurate information to the appropriate channel for action to be
taken. The success of this project depends on collecting ideas and feedback
from people in a variety of different roles in the Wikimedia movement. To
this end, there will be a multi-phased consultation where you can
participate in ways that you are most comfortable. Please visit the User
reporting system consultation page

to learn more about the process, ask questions, or offer feedback. You also
can sign up to be a liaison for the community or to translate messages or
join a focus group.

We need to discuss the existing systems and share our inputs on how we can
make it better. We have listed the objectives of this initiative and the
relevant resources on our central Indic Wikimedia Portal under the
head- Community
Health Initiative
.

If you feel interested to work on this, please list your names as Community
Liaisons in the relevant section on the page. We understand that you might
have a lot of questions about this, please feel free to list them in the
relevant section on the page. The intention to share the information before
the beginning of the Discussion Phase is to understand how many of us are
interested in working on this. If there is a need, we’ll plan hangouts
sessions for clarity of the project and the desired inputs of interested
candidates.

Looking forward to working cumulatively to make Wikimedia projects a better
space for participation.

Regards,

Manavpreet Kaur

[Wikimediaindia-l] Reminder: Last date to fill WTTT Participation form 8 Feb 2019 (today)

2019-02-08 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Dear All,

Women Wikimedians are happy to express their intent as they plan towards
having a focused Train-the-Trainer program this year for female community
leaders within the Wikimedia movement. A 2-day residential training program
to nurture leadership amongst the leading women contributors from different
Indian language Wikimedia projects. A program where not only women
community members are the participants but also they host it from
logistics, finance, resource, trainers, communications etc.

This is a separate program and not to be confused with the annual
Train-the-Trainer program hosted by Access to Knowledge Team. Access to
Knowledge Team would be the funding affiliates for this program and it
would be grateful to receive their advice and suggestions from time to time
along with other affiliates and community members, however, the program
would be put up in collaboration with women community members only. The
idea is to develop leadership in each and every aspect of community work,
so that, in the future, there is equity and also diversity when community
undertakes activities.

Recognizing this to be a distinct and new approach, it is a priority to be
extra careful in making the judicious use of public money. Having said so,
we wish to host this program in the National Capital Region, New Delhi as
the city offers larger travel connectivity and stay options. We wish to
host this program on the weekend following The Women's Day on Friday, 8th
March. Also, happy to share that besides #Wiki4Women edit-a-thon at UNESCO
Head Office in Paris, Delhi Office has also shared their intent in hosting
the same. All scholarship recipients for the Women's TTT could, in turn, be
the representatives of "Wikimedians of India" at the UNESCO workshop and
also be the resource persons.

To make this initiative a success, direction from all of you is the key!
Please feel free to suggest.
*Also please find the link to submit your interest to be a part of the
event (Women only). Due to the shortage of time, the time limit to fill the
form is 5 days i.e. till 8 February 2019 (23:59 p.m. IST).*

[Wikimediaindia-l] Revamping the Indic Language Help Desk

2019-01-16 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Hi everyone,

During Wiki Advance Training 2018 at Ranchi we realized the importance and
necessity of having a central desk for Indian languages Wikimedia projects
and following the same, a few interested members started working on it. As
all of us have some common issues and agendas, we need a common platform to
share our opinions, discuss ideas and needs like planning a National event,
framing policies (Good Article, DYK, Referencing, etc.). As this will be a
common portal for the Indian communities, we all would be able to
cumulatively work on ideas, policies and issues. But before starting the
process, we need some inputs, suggestions or feedback from the fellow
Wikimedians on the same. We would like to expand it beyond just a
discussion, and we have some suggestions for the same, which are proposed
at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Indic_Language_Help_Desk#Revamping_the_help_desk
.
Please follow the given link and feel free to give your suggestions. If you
have any queries, please feel free to contact Me, Krishna, Sushant and

[Wikimediaindia-l] Community Wishlist Survey- Tool for easy science editing using linked dictionary

2018-11-23 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Hi everyone,

The community wishlist survey is on-
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2019

I have submitted a proposal regarding *Tool for easy science editing using
a linked dictionary. *
During , a lot of editors were having issues with finding appropriate
medical terms in their native language as it is difficult and
time-consuming. Also, the different terms are used in different languages
for one subject matter, which leads to confusion. So, in order to
facilitate the editors to create content and also to standardize the
terminology being used, it will be better if we have some linked system of
providing translated names (for the desired language) for the standard
medical terms (in English)in a single command. I have proposed to run the
pilot on one language and depending upon the outcome, it may later be
provided to other languages.
*The link to the proposal is- *
*https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2019/Editing/Tool_for_easy_science_editing_using_linked_dictionary
*

If you feel the need is genuine and the tool might prove assistive in
uncomplicated content writing, please support the proposal.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki Women for Women Wellbeing Theme expansion and date extension

2018-10-29 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Hello Wikimedians,

This is to bring in your kind notice that on the basis of the ongoing
events in different communities, and after discussion with the organizers
of the event, we have decided to extend the date of the event till 24th
November 2018 11:59 p.m.
It was also observed that some people otherwise willing to join, could not
participate much in the event because of the complexity of the subject, so
for the extended period, we have expanded the theme and now have also
included social health. The list of articles have been updated on meta and
the same can be checked here-
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2018/List_of_articles

You are all expected to join hands with the women wikimedians from your
respective communities in bridging the gender gap.

Hi
The idea is good...but in November we have Wikipedia asian month and
ideally it isn't advisable to have different events at the same time. But
ciz we have wikimedians with different interests, this might be of interest
to some. We can also try having some offline events specifically related to
the theme rather than running a month long edit a thon.
Count me in.

Hi Abhinav
I understand your concern and agree with what you are saying. I agree we
need to validate the information on wiki. We can plan something but for
Indic languages, we are considering English articles as reference. But if
you think we should have one event for adding and updating references, we
can do that.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki Women for Women well-being

2018-09-14 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Hi

I understand that all of you are busy but there’s something very important
that everyone missed or didn’t find important. I shared an email on 30th
July about the event some Wikiwomen are planning regarding health issues.
The community was informed via mail and the organisers must have shared the
idea within their respective communities, but there was not even a single
response to the notification. The project earlier called "Wiki Science
Month India 2018" and now “Wiki Women for Women Well-being” aims to improve
Wikimedia's coverage of health issues and also our focus is to explore
Women leadership. Amid this occasion, an endeavor will be made to prepare
the intrigued ladies wikimedians from various networks
about organizing events. The details of the event can be found here-
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Science_Month_India_2018?venotify=created

We have also filed a grant request for the same. Despite the email and
personal requests, very few people have supported the event. I think this
Wikimania discussion is taking all our time and focus, you all are
requested to please visit the page and share your views and suggestions.
Interested individuals or communities are requested to sign in the
participants section on the meta page.

2018-08-05 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Hi Abhinav
Thanks for the clarification. It’s not in other list because we emailed
them about the scholarship status and requested to withdraw the submission.
Again, this wasn’t a complaint, just a concern about lack of information on
such financial assistance program. Anyhow, we had many other active
Wikimedians in the group who are working on the plans and taking the
movement ahead :)
Thanks

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimania tour of Rahul Desmukh

2018-08-05 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Hi everyone,
First of all, why is everyone else other than the one being questioned
addressing the mail?
As Abhinav said, If this is about voicing our opinions and concerns on a
public mailing list, I’d like to bring something to your notice and seek
your opinions on the same. In 2017, I and Stalinjeet went to Wikimedia
Conference, Berlin. There we had an informal SAARC MEETUP and later we were
all in the Strategy Discussion Team (as team no. 17), we discussed the
issues SAARC Communities are facing and the kind of practices which might
work well for the growth of our communities. Based on the discussions and
inputs from the members from different communities (SAARC as well as global
communities), we prepared a report and proposed the same for presentation
at Wikimania, 2017. The presentation was shortlisted, but as both of us
were not selected for the scholarship, we had to withdraw our submission as
we were not aware of any such funding assistance being offered by CIS-A2K.
This is not a complaint but a question that is this financial assistance
available only for some specific position holders or is open to all the
Wikimedians? and If this assistance is being offered to the Wikimedians,
why there was no formal notice about the same?

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimania tour of Rahul Desmukh

2018-08-03 Thread Dr. Manavpreet Kaur
Hi Asaf, Wikimedia India community members and CIS A2K Team,

I am sorry for intervening in this whole discussion but I feel the
discussion is deviating from the primary concern as we have received
another mail where a number of concerns have been raised in response to the
primary issue raised by Bodhi. My subscription was faulty and thanks to
Sailesh who fixed it and I got a digest of emails. From what I've learned
through the emails, Wikimedia India representatives are usually sent to
attend the annual wiki gatherings like Wikimedia Conference and this time
it was Wikimania. I am sorry to state that we (community) have never been
approached by anyone from the Chapter to discuss issues, events, Training
or to offer some assistance. We have only one point of contact for all our
issues and plans and that is CIS A2K Team. When Wikimedia India Chapter is
not taking initiatives to bring the communities together or to take the
movement ahead, then what is the purpose of their representatives attending
these events, what do they have to impart to other wikimedians there? and
how are they using the learnings in progressing the movement?
Can someone please clearly address these questions and then we can discuss
the other issues raised in the different thread.

Regards,
Manavpreet Kaur
