[Wikimediaindia-l] Report of Ahmedabad Wiki meet up - 6

2012-12-07 Thread Harsh Kothari
Hello all,

First of all, sorry for delayed report.

Wikipedia Meet up - 6 was held at Lois Kahn Plaza, IIM Campus on 1st Dec.

After some brief introduction, new members were given some basic idea about
things related to Wikipedia. Some discussions were carried out regrading
Wikipedia. Conflicts of Interest was one of them.

Then we discussed about our new project on Ahmedabad named "વિકિપરિયોજના
અમદાવાદ"(Wikiproject Ahmedabad) in Gujarati Wikipedia. In this we discussed
lots of thing including how to make this project successful, what kind of
strategies we can apply, which types of articles can be included and other
stuff.

Another key agendas of meetup discussed at large were how to make grow
community in Ahmedabad, enlarge viewership of Gujarati Wikipedia? Everyone gave
his own idea. We had some wonderful things to take on. After talking much about
these issues,we decided that Wikipedia workshop will be the best way to
increase potential editors. So we are planning to arrange one workshop on 16th
December. After finalization, detail will be posted on mailing list soon.

At the end, a small editing session was held to get newcomers' hands tested on
Wikipedia.

Here is the complete list of participants
Harsh Kothari
Samkit
Arjun
Hitarth
Dhaval
Akash
Amit Panchal
Harendrasingh
Ketan Raval

By and large, it was a successful meet up concluding some useful points.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Proposal for India's First MediaWiki Group Ahmedabad

2012-12-14 Thread Harsh Kothari
Dear friends,

This is to inform you all about the creation of the first MediaWiki group in
India. For the past several days, I’ve been speaking to Quim Gil, Sumana and
Yuvi Panda. I was informed about the setting up of local groups in different
countries for technical contributors. With encouragement from all of them and
with help from Noopur I submitted a proposal for the formation of MediaWiki
Group Ahmedabad. This proposal has been endorsed by 7 people so far.

For those who might be interested in setting up similar groups, I think a
Wikitech mailing list for India is being set up and personally, I would be
happy to help you write a proposal for your community. I think it’s a great
idea because with the help of this technical group we intend to make good
technical infrastructure and editing environment for Gujarati Wikipedia easier
to contribute to.

I have already ported HotCat and Popups(on the way) on Gujarati Wikipedia.
Please have a look at the areas we want to collaborate on:

Areas of collaboration:
Localize Gadgets for Gujarati Wikipedia and Wikisource
Create New Gadgets and extensions
Bug solving for Gujarati Wikipedia and WikiSource and also other MediaWiki
related Bug solving for all Indian languages
Translate into Gujarati Language, i.e http://translatewiki.net/
Wikidata

You can read the proposal here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Groups/Proposals/Ahmedabad

Your endorsements, improvements and feedback are welcome at the wiki
page. Thank you!

Hi srikanth
Sure you can import my common.js file into your common.js in
en.wikipedia.org. Then you can find one edit count button in left side
under toolbox. When you click on that one dialog will appear that will show
your edit count.

If you need any help then you can ping me.

Thanks

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Proposal for India's First MediaWiki Group Ahmedabad

2013-01-05 Thread Harsh Kothari
Hi All

Since there is long discussion about MediaWiki Group Ahmedabad I am writing
this mail to give some points to you.

1st and most important point: all the motivation and why I am promoting this
group is clearcut written in our submission.

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Groups/Proposals/Ahmedabad

Next is I don't want to get involved in this type of discussion. I just want to
contribute and code. This is probably the best we can do, since the rest of
Ahmedabad group members are also more interested in coding than in formal
discussions like this one. We silently help growing the MediaWiki community
across India. That is what matters.

Here you can read the point of view of the other members:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Groups/Proposals/Ahmedabad#As_members

Once the Wikimedia India SIGs are established and we see how they work we will
consider. In the meantime we are happy being a MediaWiki Group Ahmedabad.

Happy Coding and contributing.

Thanks
Harsh

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Gujarati wikimedians at Science fair, Bharuch

2013-02-11 Thread Harsh Kothari
Hi Vishnu

We have done outreach sessions at Ahmedabad, Rajkot etc. Also done one
essay writing competition for student and in that there were 300
participation. and the most important thing is that the growth rate of
Gujarati WIkipedia is 150% that is due to dedicated efforts of whole
community.

As Dhavalbhai said we, as a community, have discussed this path a few times
in our monthly web meetings so now we are growing with the sincere
dedication of all community members.

Thanks
Harsh

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Need admin rights on a few Wikipedia(s)

2013-03-19 Thread Harsh Kothari
Hi Priyanka

That is awesome idea. This will help a lot. First you localize the Gadget into
your user space and after it works fine then you can tell admin to port that
Gadget in indic wikipedia. Porting Gadget will hardly take 2 to 5 minutes for
Admins. If you need any kind of help in localize that gadget(In programming
aspects) you can ping me. I have already localized 4 Gadgets and all are
ported on Gujarati Wikipedia. One is also ported in Bengali Wikipedia. If you
localize that Gadget it will work on every wikipedia.

Thanks

[Wikimediaindia-l] Localized Gadget should port on Every Indic Wiki

2013-03-19 Thread Harsh Kothari
Hi All

If someone localize the Gadget from English Wikipedia and works fine on one
Indic wikipedia should port in every Indic Wikipedia. So that every Indic wiki
can use that particular feature. That helps a lot to Editors on Indic Wiki.

Porting Gadget will take 2 to 5 minutes for admins.

Thanks

Hi Amir

Yeah :)

But I will Explain all the steps in one mail for admins.

They have to copy paste the code and follow the steps. Just easy. You already
know more then me on that :)

But this thing will help to grow editing experience of editors.

Hi Amir

You are right about heavy template based gadgets. Twinkle can't adopt directly
on any wiki.

But see Reference Tooltips , Popups , Hotcat will work on every wikis. They are
very useful Gadgets.

So I am referring that type of low weight useful gadgets :)

Thanks

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] Announcing Round 1 Individual Engagement Grantees

2013-03-29 Thread Harsh Kothari
 “train-the-trainers”
model that teaches volunteers how to use Javanese script online,
facilitating the transcription of Javanese texts to projects like
Javanese Wikisource. The newly developed Universal Language Selector
extension for MediaWiki makes the use of this script online
increasingly possible. Because Benny’s project will rely on the
availability of this extension on all Javanese Wikimedia projects, the
start of this grant depends on the WMF Internationalization team’s
completing its scheduled deployment in coming months. We would also
like to see more discussion and input from other members of the
Javanese community demonstrating the potential of this project, and
will be working with Benny to figure out how to support those
conversations while we await the deploy.

The new grantees will begin work on their projects in the coming weeks
and they’ll be sharing progress and learnings with us all along the
way. Please visit their pages on Meta-Wiki for complete project
information and updates.[1]

Thanks to everyone who participated in this round! We look forward to
seeing even more of your ideas and input in preparation for round 2,
which begins on August 1st.[14]

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] Selection of winning bid for Wikimania 2014: London

2013-05-01 Thread Harsh Kothari

-- Forwarded message --
From: "James Forrester"

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Selection of winning bid for Wikimania 2014: London
To: "Wikimania general list (open subscription)" <

wikimedi...@lists.wikimedia.org>

Dear Wikimedians,

On behalf of the Wikimania 2014 selection Jury, after review and
evaluation of the two final bids, we have awarded the conference to
London. Congratulations to the London team, and to the Arusha team who
also put forward a solid effort.

We were concerned this year to see that both bidding teams put forward
proposals which were costly and complicated, in contrast to the
Wikimania tradition. The Jury briefly considered re-opening the bid
for other teams, and asked both bids to present a simpler core budget
and lower-cost options for attendees.

The London team took our comments to heart and decreased their core
budget to 20% of their initial proposal, and have committed to finding
ways to reduce the cost for community attendees.

We encourage future bidding teams to not give up their dreams, to keep
aiming for the stars, but at the same time, to not forget the spirit
of Wikimedia: a volunteer movement that makes creative use of limited
resources. We look forward to the proposed Wikimania Committee setting
out clearer guidelines on these principles.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] welcome, new technical contributors

2013-05-12 Thread Harsh Kothari
Hi All

Hopefully you all have subscribed mediawiki-india list. Since we all are
technical contributors. We can fix the bugs of local wikis like gu wiki, hi
wiki etc. We can localize and port some gadgets on local wikis as well.
Also can develop some new feature that particular community wants. We can
also start some regular activity to boost technical community across India.
How we can grow technical community? Ideas are welcomed. Since we all are
from different states. It is very useful to grow technical activities
across India as well as to find new contributors.

Thanks
Harsh

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] welcome, new technical contributors

2013-05-12 Thread Harsh Kothari
I totally agree with Sumana. Try to edit something on wiki so that you can
also think that this facility must be there and watch village pump for
problems and try to solve that. Since I am contributing in Gujarati
wikipedia I have already localized and ported some of essential gadgets
that any language wiki must have like HotCat. Bot is also very useful tool.
Since I have created some bot scripts for gu wiki for automate the tasks
like placing infobox, grammar correction etc.

According to me mediawiki gadget kitchen is very easy thing to start. I
have already developed half tutorial for new coders. I will complete it
after my examination. Its very interesting stuff and it uses js, css :)
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Gadget_kitchen

If you want any kind of information/help regarding to gadgets, bots,
extension I can help you :)

Happy Coding

Thanks
Harsh
