[Wikimediaindia-l] seeking help with Hindi projects in Wikisource...

2016-08-10 Thread Lane Rasberry
Hello,

Can anyone here refer me to someone who is active in making Hindi-language
contributions to Wikisource? I wish to meet someone with experience in that
language and project. Otherwise, can anyone suggest to me which Indic
languages in Wikisource seem to be most active?

Is anyone able to make a recommendation for any OCR software for converting
scanned Hindi language documents to digital text? Does anyone know anything
about in-Wikisource support for OCR in Hindi language? Does it exist? Is
there documentation?

Thanks for anything anyone can share.

yours,

Hello,

I am happy to see that this project has been funded.

>

Shyamal, your criticism is all valid, but I feel that it misses an
important point. That point is that the Wikimedia community owes India 1/6
of all community funds (India is 1/6 of world population) and very little
of the money owed actually goes to India. As someone in the United States I
feel continually concerned about why Wikimedia contributors in India argue
about portions of the money available without making plans to take all of
what is owed.

Whatever happens in the future with Wikimedia community grants in India in
the future, I hope that more people look to apply for more funds. I think
this one was funded because the money was available for India and this was
the best available proposal. Some people may feel that this is not the best
project - those people should write better grants and propose better
projects.

I would like to see more regional user groups in India be founded. It only
takes 3 people, and user groups will be treated by the Wikimedia community
as equal to the Wikimedia India chapter. If anyone feels that the chapter
does not represent them, then they can start a user group or even a second
Wikimedia India chapter.

Whatever happens - please more grant requests from India! I think this
project is good, but also I recognize that few proposals come from India.

Request more, make more plans, make plans over time, and please more people
start thinking about what you will do with your 1/6 allotment when
Wikimedia community organizers are mature enough as a collective to manage
it. In business India has some of the best management infrastructure in the
world. In the NGO sector... I regret that very often development is
difficult and argumentative in India. I wish for more collaboration in
India because money is there to support.

yours,

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Attn: Wikisource communities - Don't waste your time typing text. Get paid.

2014-05-01 Thread Lane Rasberry
Hello Dhaval and others,

I have no affiliation with the WMF and the WMF speaks for itself. I am a
member of Wikimedia New York City but cannot speak on behalf of any
organization.

Of course Dhaval is joking a bit. I do encourage the Gujarati and all
Indian Wikimedia communities to apply for more grants, and if anyone does
this, feel free to email me or message my bluerasberry meta or English page
and I will comment on the proposal. I am not sure of the best way to build
community in India but I do wish that contributors in India would do more
to reach out to Wikipedians in other countries. Poor Asaf has to manage the
entire world and of course there is no way he is able to read everything
and respond to everyone. He can answer you as he wishes but I feel that
Wikipedians everywhere should try to take their concerns to other
volunteers and especially other chapters, and not entirely to the WMF. If
Indian projects get the approval of other Wikimedia chapters then I assure
you that will make those projects more persuasive to grant reviewing
committees, and in general, the more friends anyone has in more community
volunteer groups the more luck you will have.

Also, if anyone wants to talk to me by phone or Skype feel free to email me
and make an appointment. I live in New York and will make arrangements to
talk in during Indian day time as I can.

yours,

Thank you Ravi for making us aware that WMF is happily funding content
generation (or in nicer term Content upload) as Asaf from WMF and User Blue
Rasberry have suggested. This is a great news for my Gujarati wikisource
community, whom I am including in this reply.

 Dear Gujarati Wiki Community,

Please visit the link in below email, where Wikimedia Foundation (shortly
known as WMF) is suggesting that they are funding (in simpler term paying)
for content upload. This is the task that we all are doing free of cost so
far. Because you have uploaded hundreds (may be thousands) of pages so far
as we have created 50+ books on gu.wikisource, all our efforts will be paid
now by WMF (in fact should have been paid so far as well). If you have any
doubt, reach out to User:Bluerasberry and User:Ijon on meta (
meta.wikimedia.org). Asaf (User:Ijon) clearly suggests that Bots are
under the paid activity considered by WMF.

Get as much benefit you get of WMF's this offer.

 Hi Asaf,

Can the community claim back the money that would have hypothetically
been paid to if they applied for the grant before they started uploading
 the content of rare literature?

 Hi,

Poor volunteers of the global Wikisource communities,

Don't waste your time typing text. Get paid or hire staff to do the work.
