Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] A Wikipedia Mini-hackathon in Delhi (CIS India)
Hi, Thanks for sharing this Anirudh. Could similar hackathons be tries in other cities as well? Trying to engage with tech communities wherever there is a sizeable Wikipedia community might make sense. It would give Wikipedians tools to streamline their editing work better and could help techies access and understand how end users behave and use their tools. How do we replicate this further in the community? Pradeep Sent from Yahoo! [Wikimediaindia-l] Creative Commons turns 10
Hi, Creative Commons, the license that Wikipedia and its sister projects have been using turns 10 this year. Their celebrations - http://10.creativecommons.org/ - last for 10 days from December 7 to 16. If you have a meetup in that period, perhaps we can celebrate. Pradeep Sent from Yahoo! Hi Pranav, I think the two topics Creative Commons 10 this week and their impending visit to India in February, 2013 are getting mixed . I think Shuba is referring to the CC 10 celebration meetups if they happen. Could you fork a seperate thread for the February events and leave this thread for those interested in having meetups related to the Creative Commons 10th anniversary event? Thanks. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimediaindia-l Digest, Vol 329, Issue 1
Hi Abhishek, Thank you for responding. Since this is a new concept for us, I hope you will bear with us a little. 1. If the idea of the Summit is that it is to be held in Pune only, why not just call it Wikipedia Summit Pune? This gives other cities in India also a chance to consider such an event themselves. 2. Since this summit is to be held in Pune year-on-year, I would suggest writing to the Pune list and also inviting the Pune SIG in the Committee. 3. There has not been a WikiConference in 2012. I remember the Chapter had put out a call for bids but got none. I am happy that they did not feel compelled to push for a WikiConference. These things work much better when the community members want it. Till then, I suppose state level conferences like the one organised by the Malayalam Wikipedia community and this Summit by Pune would breed a group of people with skills acquired for organising a nation wide WikiConference. [Wikimediaindia-l] Bharuch First meetup - A second hand report
Hi, An important assignment kept me away from the first Bharuch meetup. Another Wikipedian from Bharuch Satishbhai took over and attended the meetup at the K J Choksi public library. Since no one else turned up, Satishbhai spoke with the librarian telling him about Wikipedia qnd showing him the Gujarati Wikipedia and showing him how to edit the same. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia Summit India 2013 for Spoken Indian Language Wikipedia!
Hi Abhishek, Is the Program page updated? The page refers to Education and Gender Gap whereas your email suggests that the Summit is about Spoken Wikipedia. Since there are only 9 more days for scholarships this information would help. Warm regards, Pradeep Sent from Yahoo! The distinction between the Indic languages and Dravidian languages is an important one, and they should not be confused to be one and the same. So are the words India and Indian. If this logic is true, then the English name of the Republic of India, and the name of this mailing list would be derogatory as well. Evidently, to most people they aren't. Nobody here is dismissing Dravidian languages. Everybody understands that they are distinct. It's just that the word Indic often refers to them, too. When the context and the meaning may be unclear, use Indo-Aryan and Dravidian. -- Amir Elisha Aharoni · אָמִיר אֱלִישָׁע אַהֲרוֹנִי http://aharoni.wordpress.com “We're living in pieces, I want to live in peace.” – T. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia Women Workshop Report
hi, A couple of points here: 1. While women specific workshops are great and we've had requests from various people across the country (!) to conduct similar workshops, we should also consider doing workshops for both genders as well. Each workshop is energy sapping! 2. We are a relatively small group of volunteers and my hope is that some of the people we train at these workshops will in their stead be able to conduct similar workshops 6 months or a year down the line. warm regards, Pradeep Mohandas How Pradeep uses email? - http://goo.gl/6v1I9 From: Karthik Nadar karthik...@wikimedia.in To: Wikimedia India Community list wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Sent: Wednesday, 7 November 2012 9:04 PM Subject: Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia Women Workshop Report Yeah Srikanth, we have follow up events to this one. * One of the Staff from Sophia College was interested for similar women's workshop. All discussions and planning done while organizing this workshop for women paid off. In all, 70+ women participants attended the workshop. The workshop started with a short introduction after which, wasting no time, the women participants moved on to learning how to edit Wikipedia which was though by the present on ground volunteers. The participants were were divided in groups and every group had to create a new article which wasn't already available on Wikipedia. In the process, women interacted with the volunteers, asked question regarding Wikipedia. Every group at least had added introduction to the new article. Having done with the basic editing, a general presentation on Wikipedia was given by some of the volunteers. This was followed by question and answers regarding the same. By this time, it was already 1.30pm, so the lunch was announced. After having lunch, the participants got back to their seats. Pretty much everybody stayed back post lunch. Moksh continued with teaching how to edit Wikipedia. This time it wasn't it in groups though. References and Notability were the main topics that were covered in this session. Anshuman and Karthik then proceeded with teaching photo uploads on Wikipedia. Quiz was conducted towards the end and Wikipedia-Tshirts were given as prizes for giving right answers. Karthik, then also showcased the winning images of Wiki Loves Momunents 2012 India. The long day came to an end with an overwhelming response and a call for organizing many such activities. The feedback received was positive. The participants enjoyed the workshop. We are thankful to everybody who made this event a great one. Thanks to all the volunteers. [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia Meetup in Bharuch
hi, I have been living in Bharuch for the past one year. Since there have been no meetups in this region (the Surat-Vadodara belt) and having to travel to Mumbai to get to the closest meetup, I decided to WP:BEBOLD and do one meetup in Bharuch. I've created the meetup page here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Bharuch/Bharuch1 Please feel free to share this far and wide with folks around the Bharuch area. We're also planning to do a small editing workshop here once we complete the meetup. This is at a local public library that I am a member of. Once I get clearances required for both the meetup and the workshop, I will post a link on the meetup page. warm regards, Pradeep User:Prad2609 Pradeep Mohandas How Pradeep uses email? - http://goo.gl/6v1I9___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l
