Dear All,

I'm happy to share with you that '22nd Cochrane Colloquium', an annual
celebration of Cochrane Collaboration is going to take place in Hyderabad
this year. Cochrane Collaboration is an independent, non-for profit,
international organisation. It helps provide evidence-based, relevant,
systematic, up-to-date reviews to people on health which is widely referred
by healthcare-professionals, patients and general public.[1]

Last year in the Colloquium, there were nearly 2000 scientists from around
the world in Quebec where Cochrane and Wikipedia initiated a partnership to
populate Wikipedia articles with evidence from Systematic Reviews. This
partnership was initiated on the Wikipedia front by Dr. James and his team
of Wiki Project Med Foundation
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Project_Med_Foundation. As a part of
it there has been appointment of Sydney Poore as a Wikipedian-In-Residence. For
more

The Colloquium is going to happen from 21st - 26th September this year.

A Pre-colloquium Symposium 'Wikipedia and Cochrane' is planned on 21st
Sept. Cochrane Collaboration has offered free entries for upto 50
Wikipedians to this session! For registration and further details please
read the event page on meta
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_and_Cochrane_Symposium,_2014.

Cochrane has also allotted two slots for WP workshops in addition to a
Wikipedia Booth during the colloquium.

Would love to hear more from you and make the best of this opportunity.
Ccd. in this mail are, James, Sydney and Manu (from Cochrane). Interested
folks please contact me off-list.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] women and technology

2013-03-12 Thread Nikita Belavate
on to wikipedia and this issue is widely acknowledged. We also
 know
we have very few women editors. But we ought to be careful to not
 project
this as a case of male editors being non supportive of women, (which may
 not be the case).

Perhaps the above reference in the article was the interpretation of
the news reporter or perhaps even a misquote (which happens often in the
 media too).

For the record the Women's workshop that I referred to was
co-organised by many supportive men keen to bridge the gender gap in
wikipedia - Om, Soumyan, Pavanaja and yours truly. Of course the event
 was
led by a very capable and enthusiastic lady wikipedian Pavithra!

We surely need the experienced editors to be a whole lot more
sensitive and to be careful not to
 *Bite*http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Please_do_not_bite_the_newcomers
new editors (irrespective of gender). There also appears to be a template
 {{this is a new
 userhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:This_is_a_new_user
}} that new users can sport on their user pages.

 Have a good weekend everyone!

 Arun

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki-Women Conference India

2012-08-15 Thread nikita belavate
@ Adethya:

Hii ! Thanks for your query and that you cared to ask.
The Women-only-conference will be on 12-13th Jan 2013, however we can or I
think we should have an after-party till 15th (i.e Wikipedia-Birthday)
wherein for the those two days(i.e 14th and 15th), male-Wikipedians and
friends are most Gladly Welcome :)
We now have to chart out programmes and *do let know* if you have*
Ideas*that can be executed on any of those two days.

@ Sudhanwa Jogalekar

Thanks Alot for your Support !
That is one reason of having thought of doing it in Pune, after discussing
places like Mumbai etc.. There are women editors and women campus
ambassadors who can be of Great help for the 'on-ground support'.

Regarding venue, since there are so many universities around, we shall be
optimistic about getting place for free. Your help will be needed :). We
will have to form a core-team and entrust work so that things get going
from now.

Am also planning to attend the meetup on 18th,Sat in Pune and hope to meet
more women contributors or members from Pune. Keenly looking forward to
have interesting and constructive discussion about the Conference
face-to-face with all members !!

 event.

Please let us know about your ideas of the event. We can surely help

Am very Glad and Honoured to tell you about the First of its kind,
Wiki-Women Conference to be held in India. We have been talking about the

  seems particularly prominent here.

With the Aim of attracting and sustaining larger Women population, a
Conference for Women would be a Great place without any influence that
 would
undermine the confidence(just a possibility) in any way from Male
contributors. With this agenda in mind The National Wiki-Women Conference
would be a two day Event (a weekend) in Pune. It has been a place of lot
 of

 initiation
of Women-Education movement and establishment of the first Women's
 school in
India. And this seems to be a Good place for the first Women's Conference
considering some other practicalities as well.

As per, User:Netha Hussain has created a Meta-page for the conference
 Here .
Dates for the conference have been proposed as 12th-13th Jan 2013
tentatively on the eve of Wikipedia Birthday on 15th Jan. Followed by an
after-party till 15th which will be open for males. This will bring in
Wikipedians from different areas under one roof and make it a memorable
celebration ! The page will be developed as the programme shapes further
  here-on.

Would be Great to carry the discussion further with your inputs about the
first Wiki-Women Conference in India. Look forward with sincere hope to

[Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikimedia-I] Report of 17th Wikipedia Community Meetup in Mumbai.

2012-07-20 Thread nikita belavate
Dear All,

We had the '17th Wikipedia Mumbai Community Meetup' on 14th July,Sat. at
Flarepath office in Bandra, who were generous in providing us their place
on the weekend.
It started with informal introductions since there were new members
attending Wiki-meetup for the very first time.

There were 17 attendees in all, including members from Flarepath team, an
Odia-Wiki contributor-Manoranjan Bahera (who also attended the meetup for
the first time in Mumbai !),Vikram Crishna ji, Karthik, Vikram Vincent (
from Banglore community), myself and some more new folks.

We had planned for an editing session this time followed by a brief about
Wiki Loves Monuments. The session was decided to progress depending on the
understanding and knowledge of attendees about Wikipedia, and was focussed
more on a basic level. Also the meetup was just the day after Eng.
Wikipedia crossed the milestone of 4-million articles ! Alot of people
present did not know about it, and so we made it an initiation point,
further into,

   - How Wikipedia managed to gather so many articles?
   - Who create these articles(it was not a one day task)?
   - Anyone can do it and How?

They did not have an account or had one but hardly used or edited. So, the
basic question of why you should have an account as well as how wikipedia
respects anonymity was discussed. It was interactive and people were very
enthusiastic about getting first hand insights and begin editing. Also,
there was discussion regarding how a 'company' page should be like in
wikipedia which would not be speedily deleted ! Vikram Crishna ji was
present and we got to hear from him as well !
We also created an account for a new-comer and did few edits from her
account.

Then we discussed briefly about Wikimedia commons. We categorised some of
the Mumbai Photowalk images using cat-a-lot. A brief about WLM was also
made; they are willing to volunteer/help and wanted to know more. It was
post 5pm by this time. Snacks and Coffee were sponsored by Flarepath, a Big
Thanks to them !

I want to Thank Ashwin (user:AshLin) here :) for taking an editing sesson
in WCI-2011, which was the first session I had attended, very organised
wherein he had given each of the attendees a printout/handout explaining
the basics of editing etc. We took some more printouts of that and
distributed at the end as the summary of the past 2- 21/2 hours.
Thank you Noopur for suggesting Flarepath as well as connecting us ! Thanks
to Abhishek Suryawanshi, who was going to come to Mumbai, only for the
meetup, however owing to something urgent, he could not; However he
and Srikanth Ramakrishnan did support offline. Thanks Alot !
Few pictures of the meetup are
herehttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Mumbai_Meetup_July2012
!
We hope to keep in touch with the newbies and make them regular editors and
have regular gatherings !

Hello !

Noopur, we have had past meetups in Bandra with good turnout, so that will
be great! Only thing we felt was that some cafes are bit noisy, so this
time we were thinking of a quieter place. We prefer a Saturday over Sunday
in Mum owing to Mega blocks. Could that be possible? May be myself or
Karthik can also go there and check out before meetup then. Also, there are
more people coming up voluntarily and trying for the venue.

The Mumbai community is responding both on the Mum-mailing list and direct
mails to us.We will surely check out all the options. Will keep everyone
updated.
Thanks to all.

Hello all,
I agree there is categorization and inserting meta data work pending for
some of the photos clicked in Mumbai Photowalk 2. The temporary maintenance
[[Category:WTM ll]] was however changed to [[Category:Wikipedia Takes
Mumbai 2]], to avoid disambiguation.

Few Good clicks have been inserted on appropriate articles. Categorization
will be done and the usage stats would surely rise :)

However am confused as to what should be done with repetitive images?

Also, it would be really helpful if we have a preset guide-book for the
maintenance related work since even I was unaware of lot of things while
taking up the charge (which I eventually learnt and still learning !) and
hence the delay.

Warmly,
Nikita Belavate.

 Ashwin,
Thanks for the suggestions. But the contest deliberately kept the entry
barriers low - the contest was for the uploads alone. So we are not
considering any additional behaviour (categorising, clear descriptions,
 usage suggestions) for the prizes.

Too add to Srikanth L's points on the tamil wiki media contest, these are
some of the preliminary lessons learnt (the official report will carry the
 complete list):

 1) The commons admins/maintenance activity oriented users are even more
overworked than en wiki. If we are bringing files there through our
activities, we carry the responsibility to not to overburden them. We
realised this and have formed a team from ta wiki, which is doing the
categorising and adding descriptions. (This team just coalesced on its own,
without any conscious effort on the organisers part and is doing well aided
by commons regulars).[1] Two of us have applied for and got file mover
rights and two more have obtained AWB rights for doing cleanup.
Categorisation is about 90 percent complete now.

We plan to finish the clean up (copyvio tagging / rotating/ cropping /
description / categorising/ watermark removal) for all the files that were
uploaded as part of the after contest efforts.

The priority for us is 1)eliminating copyvio 2)clear
 filenames/descriptions 3)rotations 4)categorisaton

And do the categorisation using people who are familiar with it in your
own wikis (to avoid redundancy and errors like Beria points out). Dont do
categorisation drives by people who aren't familiar with how and why
 categorising should be done.

 2) Let contestants know where the images go and what they are used for.
This will earn our wikis more active users. We managed to do this for part
of the contestants - couldnt reach them all. But to my knowledge, ta wiki
has gained atleast half a dozen new users who are using their files and
some are even writing new articles for using their entries. Once they
became involved, they are involving themselves in further activities in
 commons too.

 3) Of the 15k odd files uploaded as part of the contest 8k are being used
in various wiki projects and counting multiple usage, across all wikis
there are a total of 11k file usage instances.

 4) Taking cue from WLM Europe, we are planning a followup message on all
uploaders talk pages (and email if their email facility is enabled)
thanking them and telling them of furthur activities they can take part of.

Just to add to what Konarak and Ashwin said, I am guilty as charged. We
kept the Category:Ahmedabad_1 to avoid flooding the popular category. It
was decided to serve as the ''maintenance category'' but none of us really
got around to transferring images to the Ahmedabad category or cleaning up.
There are several reasons for this:

 1) People started using images from Ahmedabad_1 soon after the event to
make Ahmedabad articles. So, the attention was diverted there.

 2) Personally, I was unclear as to whether all these images had to be
migrated because of course some are repetitive and redundant. But, I/We are
no one to judge whose image stays or goes.

 3) Since then and since the Tamil Wikimedia contest I have been
 contemplating on things:
How can we minimize and optimize image uploads? Can we set parameters in
the contest format so that everyone can contribute but its more diverse in
terms of results? Maybe we should generate a more exhaustive list of items?
Also, are there guidelines for maintenance that we can make (5-7 points) so
that the organizers can follow that up too (just in case they aren't aware
 or don't know how to)?

Do let me know what you guys think!

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikimedia-in-mum] Report on Wikipedia Takes Mumbai II

2012-01-30 Thread nikita belavate
Hii All,

Sorry for not been able to write in detail about the event yesterday.

On 28th Morning, the participants arrived exactly at 8am. Few, who could
not arrive on time made it a point to inform one of us, about it.
We spoke to them about their preference of places to click which went on
Good. There after, around 8.45am people dispersed on respective routes.

I along with three others covered the extreme north of churchgate(
Jogeshwari, Borivali and Dahisar ). While Karthik covered the Chatrapati
Shivaji Vastu Sangrahalay interiors besides other places and headed to
HBCSE for keeping the lab ready for participants with the tool installed.
Not many could make it to HBCSE though, owing to the distance. In all there
were 10 of us who reached there by 2.30pm.

The major technical challenge started here while uploading the images. The
system would not allow upload from many people simultaneously and only one
person's images were uploaded at a time ! On informing this to Dr.
Nagarjuna, he mentioned about asking help from the IRC center but
unfortunately, none of the wikipedians were online at that time. We tried
calling few , but for some reason they cwere not available then. After
this, we waited for sometime for the one person's upload to get over and
till then the others filled the data for the images. Two people
successfully uploaded images using 'Commonist' tool for mass upload.
The participants were comfortable with the process absolutely but the
problem was when they pressed 'UPLOAD'. It said, There is an 'unknown
error'. In order to overcome this, we tried to upload using the basic 5
steps of upload in commons, but it showed the message, 'The files are
empty' !!! no idea How and Why this happened..!

After trying this, Nagarjuna Sir sat with us for trying Python. And the
rest as he mentioned earlier in this thread:
while running the script, it cribbed about 'missing module poster'. I
have installed it using pip. then another missing dependency was
python-pyexiv2. apt-get install python-pyexiv2 took care of this.
after that the script ran successfully. Took lot of time in getting the
script working though.

However we could not run Python on other PCs since by the time it was post
8pm.
We could only upload images of 4 people successfully. However this is
something to discuss as why the tools did not work as they should have
been. Partcipants left the campus by 7.30pm after copying the images on
desktop.

Big Thanks to Nargarjun Sir for being there with us for the entire time
till 9pm in HBCSE and his efforts in upload procedure !!

Besides, there are many people who helped in particular stages of the
event. Starting Noopur , Pranav, Moksh, Netra, Vickram uncle,
Dr.Nagarjuna, Kundan
Sir, Aditya and Krutika for attending the event. Also would like to make
mention of Ajit Sahu who created the logo for the event with just little
briefing. Thanks to ALL !

Warm Regards,
Nikita Belavate.

 your own way :(

The guards at Bombay House were pretty clear, we have orders not to allow
photography on Homy Mody Street in front of the building for security
reasons. Its odd that such orders are given in the first place, as public
roads are not under their purview and we were certainly not trespassing
their property. Aditya offered to delete the pics if they could show that
its illegal, obviously they could not. Just because they are scared of
terror threats, whoever gave the order seems to think they have the right
to deny the public of their rights and curtail freedom. Talk about misuse
 of power.

Yes- if there is a yellow board that declares the building as a
Prohibited Area, you are not allowed to photograph such buildings. We saw
quite a few of these buildings- such as the RBI building. These boards are
required to be registered with the police/government, so it isn't like
 anyone can put them up.

Everything else is fair game- as long as you are not trespassing on their
property (which we weren't) or harassing them (we were super nice and
polite with the Bombay House folks as well as the police- so this wasn't a
 problem either).

Quick question -- which IRC channels did you go into? If I know more
about that, I can help encourage better 24/7 coverage.

In the long run, it'll be helpful for Wikimedia to have volunteer system
administrators around the world, to increase the chances that someone is
online and available and can help you. And maybe you can become a
 sysadmin yourself! Wikimedia Labs
 https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/WMF_Projects/Wikimedia_Labs is an effort

but if you ask on the Talk/Discuss page for an invite, you can get one.
