Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] COVID-19 task force on Wikdiata need your helping hands!

2020-04-19 Thread Jinoy Tom Jacob
Hi all,

Hope all is well and safe

It's been almost a month the COVID-19 task force

on Wikdiata was created by Bodhisattwa and Wikimedians from different
community joined the initiative and started contributing. Currently 31
items as been created for Corona affected states & union territories, 298
items for districts that are affected by COVID-19 pandemic. Out of this 31
items, currently 13 items
 are linked to English
WIkipedia as well as regional language Wikipedia.

We are currently updating the number of cases, number of clinical tests
conducted, number of recoveries, number of death for each these items.
Apart from these items we are also creating items for Media bulletins
published by different state and union governments of India time to time.
We are also adding archiving URLs to it as some bulletins are getting
disappeared from the official websites are some days.

>From April 2nd week we have tried to fetch these data that we have added
from Wikidata to Wikipedia. It displays the active, total, recovery and
death cases in the Infobox for the linked article. Initially it was tried
in English Wikipedia and then other language Wikipedia. Some of the
language Wikis currently using these values includes Malayalam, Gujarti,
and Kannada.

Some of the 'coronavirus pandemic' article currently using data from
Wikipedia are listed below:

   - 2020 coronavirus pandemic in Kerala
    - (English)
   ,
   (Malayalam)

and (Kannada)

   - 2020 coronavirus pandemic in Gujarat
    - (English)
    and
   (Gujarati)

   - 2020 coronavirus pandemic in Karnataka
    - (English
   )
   and (Kannada)

So any changes in Wikidata will reflect in all the Wikipedia where the
Wikidata fetch template is used. We have updated the steps on how to add
the Wikidata values into Wikipedia Infobox in our task force main page. So
that Wikimedians / other users can translate the articles in their language
and use the code inside the Infobox to display the data from Wikidata. So
that the Infobox shows automatically the updated value from Wikidata.

We have a google sheet page created by Satdeep for displaying the latest
updated values and which needs to be updated. We are facing some
difficulties in updating some states and districts as the volunteers are
less in Wikidata than Wikipedia as well as the data of some districts are
not easily available. So we really need your help to go forward with this
task.

If you have any questions or need any help, kindly please ping us or ask
your questions at here.

If
anyone is interested in joining this project, please do join. We have some
interesting tasks that we can share with you, so that you can work on it to
improve the coronavirus pandemic related items in Wikidata.

I would like to thank all the Wikimedia volunteers, who has
activity working on this project and updating the data.

[Wikimediaindia-l] COVID-19 task force on Wikdiata need your helping hands!

2020-03-29 Thread Bodhisattwa Mandal
Hello all,

For last couple of weeks, I am trying to update state and district wise
data of COVID-19 pandemic in India on Wikidata. I have tried to organize
the workflow here
.
Thanks to Mahir for creating all the visualisation queries

and Jinoy for working on the health bulletins. To check how important the
entire work is, you can check this map showing the spread of the disease at
the district level or this line chart at the state
level, for example, all built from Wikidata. This is
useful for epidemiological research, distribution of relief and health
materials, planning of volunteer relief teams and many other aspects. There
are already quite a few non-Wikimedia volunteer workforce working on this.

Now, the problem is, there are huge discrepancies in data provided by WHO,
different government health bulletins, media houses and crowdsourced
volunteer initiatives and I have been trying as best as I could to find the
most accurate data and update them as far as at the district level. Also,
the Wikidata interface is not suitable for day-to-day updating like this
one, which is another problem. Needless to say, this is extremely
exhausting to do it alone for the whole country.

So, I appeal to every experienced Wikidata contributors in this list to at
least take care of the data of the districts of your states, so that the
workload is distributed and we can deliver high quality accurate
epidemiological data as the disease spreads further in the country. If I
have to do it alone, I will then have no other choice but to leave some
states behind which will create unavoidable and unwanted data gaps.

If you have any questions or want to join us, please ping me, Mahir or
Jinoy here.

We have a fairly active messenger chat group to coordinate with, where you
are more than welcome.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa
