[Wikimedia Kenya] RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS BY KOSGEI

2012-03-29 Thread Branton Obwari
Hello Board,
Here are the answers to the questions
1. Why do you think you suit to be in the board of WMKE?
I have been a part of WMKE for over a year now and I have seen it
grow. I understand the tasksand challenges that lie ahead and I
believe taking a lead role as a Board member I am going to leverage on
the lessons and experiences that I have learned since I joined so that
we Make Wikimedia Kenya a chapter of excellence and a model to be
emulated all across our continent.
Having worked in the education and technology field for quite sometime
I know that knowledge is a great resource that has the capacity to
change generations and alter the course of history for the better. I
am therefore very supportive of the Wikimedia Vision and I will bring
with me my experience as an open source enthusiast and a Webfwd for
the success of the chapter.

2. What is your take on the level of participation of members in WMKE
projects/meetings/mailing list? Anything you think should be done
differently?

We Should work to improve member participation and come up with
projects. I do believe the mailing list is a good form of
communication but only if used in the right way so that we have only
the most important and relevant information on the mailing list and
not too much that it causes inconvenience.

3. As a board needs members with different skills (e.g.
administrative, financial, public relations etc), please tell us which
particular skill set have you worked in previously, like in another
society or organisation?

I bring with me plenty of experience in management having worked in
the educational field as an administrative assistant at Bridge
international Academies, as an Operations Associate at Mprep and also
as agribusiness officer at PanAAC.

I am also good in networking and building communities and I hope to
use this skills in improving wikimedia Kenya

4. Which languages have you worked in so far? And what is your
position on both a language policy and a language strategy for WMKE?

I have worked on Swahili and English and I beleive we should really
work more in improving the local languages
particularly swahili.

5. How would you best deal with the issue of editor attraction and
retention in our local chapter so as to ensure the growth of WMKE as a
whole?

I will encourage more outreach projects to educational institutions
and also work towards having entry level projects for the newbies. e.g
Wikpedia Takes Nairobi.

6. Now that we are an independent chapter, how do you plan to raise
funds supposing the parent Wikimedia Foundation won't avail funds to
run the aforementioned project?

Having taken part in the annual fundraiser I learned a lot of lessons
on the topic.

1. Wikimedia Fundraiser is facilitated by 2 things, Banners and Appeals.

2. The banners and appeals used in other parts of the world may not
have the same impact as it does here in Kenya.

We therefore need to come up with Banners and that best describe our
local experience and also have a lower level of contribution that most
people can afford. I am thinking of the Kenyans for Kenya intitiative
where it was possible for people to donate as low as 10Shs.

Therefore working with the team we will come up with the best
fundraiser strategy that best fits our local chapter.

7. What kind of a project/ activity would you envision WMKE and its
members undertake in order to fulfill the objectives of Wikimedia
Foundation as a whole?

We need to further on the exiting offline project and also work on
attracting more editors in our Swahili Wikipedia. My goal is to have
at least 300 edits per month on Swahili Wikipedia.

The other project is partnering with chapters in other parts of the
world on potential projects that can be replicated locally. e.g the
Wik1 Africa project.

Warmly,
Isaac K. Kosgei.

[Wikimedia Kenya] ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS BY ANN NJERI

2012-03-29 Thread Branton Obwari
1. Why do you think you suit to be in the board of WKME?
Firstly, I am willing to contribute my time and other resources as a
leader as I seek to serve others with the objective of attaining the
common good for society as a whole. I know there are those specialized
skills and talents that I have which will contribute to build WKME,
especially the Kenyan chapter. I may not know much but I’m willing
to learn and I believe that’s the most important thing. I am a team
player who believes that the more is yielded when we collaborate. We
also need a female representative on the board and a place which I am
ready to take up.
2. What is your take on the level of participation of members in the
WKME projects/meetings/mailing list? Anything you think should be
done differently?
There is room for improvement, I speak also for myself. We need to be
more dedicated to the projects that we do as well as build the spirit
of solidarity in our midst by taking all successes and failures as a
team and not individually.
I would suggest that we attempt to have online meetings where we can
conference as well as chat live. This will help counter the problem of
unavailability of members for the meet-ups, increase number of
meetings and kill the problem of need for geographical proximity.
3. As a board needs members with different skills (e.g.
administrative, financial, public relations etc) please tell us which
particular skill set you have worked in previously, like another
society or organization?
I have accounting skills that have been gained not only theoretically
but practically. I have completed CPA (certified Public Accountant).
I have also worked in Sarova Stanley in the accounts department. This
will help assist greatly in maintaining accurate accounts based on
accounting standards requirements.
I am also a marketer having only one year left to complete my degree
in Marketing and Finance. Early next month I will be working in
Synovate Kenya, a research firm. The skills gained therein will be
useful for us to develop strategies and invest in research that is
useful in solving various challenges we have like getting and
retaining editors.
I also serve in the Leadership of Global Leadership interlink (GLI),
an international organization that is seeking to build leaders in
their formative years so that they can uphold ethical principles all
through their lives. We carry out duties like organizing conferences,
training of members, preparing content to be taught and discussed
among other administrative tasks.

4. Which languages have you worked in so far? And what is your
position on both a language policy and language strategy for WMKE?
Sadly I have not worked in any languages so far but I do intend to in
the future. A language strategy can be that of getting as many tribes
as possible to contribute to building of Wikipedia. It may seem
difficult but we have an example from the current local radio stations
broadcasted in various local languages to learn from. Our pride comes
from our culture which gives us our identity, something we should all
be proud of.
5. How would you best deal with the issue of editor attraction and
retention in our local chapter to ensure the growth of WKME as a
whole?
I think the best place to start is to research into the question “Why
don’t people edit, and if they do, why are most people not committed?”
The answers to the above questions can give us a guide to formulate
strategy that will increase and retain editors.
On speculation though, I think the idea of Wikimedia has not really
sunk in the mind of many Kenyans let alone the issue of editing. I
remember when we went to Kenyatta University and one of the senior
lecturers had not heard of the concept Wikipedia. There is need to
increase the sensitization that will help us attract more Kenyans. We
need to come up with appeals that will reach out to the human
component in all humans; that of contributing to the common good of
all. There is need to communicate the benefits that people will get
once they become contributors because most people look at their end of
the deal “What’s in it for me?” The benefits need not be monetary
because the last thing we need to do is increase our costs.

6. Now that we are an independent chapter, how do you plan to raise
funds supposing the parent Wikipedia Foundation won’t avail funds to
run the aforementioned project?
Partnerships are crucial, which can be very fruitful in a day when
firms are seeking avenues for CSR (corporate social responsibility).
We just need to be bold and creative enough to come up with projects
and present them to the corporate for financing. It’s not easy, but
it’s possible. It doesn’t have to be about the money only since there
are institutions that periodically change their computers so we can
solicit for donations of computers to those schools that have few or
none.
The Ministry of Education can be a powerful source of finance. We can
avail ourselves as the tools they will

2012-03-29 Thread Branton Obwari
1.why do you think you suit to be in the board of WMKE?

Because I have and was among the founders of WMKE. I have dedicated
and worked hard to see WMKE to its current form and I still have the
energy and zeal to take even to greater heights.

 2. What is your take on the level of participation of members in
WMKE projects/meetings/mailing list? Anything you think should be done
differently?

I think our participation on the mailing list has been mostly vague
and somewhat with empty talk. Having regular physical meetups should
help us resolve issues fast and efficiently and plan for projects too.
Our mailing list should just be used for Communication en Mass

 3. As a board needs members with different skills (e.g.
administrative, financial, public relations etc), please tell us which
particular skill set have you worked in previously, like in another
society or organisation?

Team leadership ,Project management and selflessness skills are what I
have acquired through my involvement with both the Wikimedia Kenya,
The OLPC Movement in Kenya and a few other personal and voluntary
engagements

 4. Which languages have you worked in so far? And what is your
position on both a language policy and a language strategy for WMKE?

I have worked in Both Swahili and English and I have no reservations
on language policy for WMKE. Both languages suffice and should remain
our key focus./

 5. How would you best deal with the issue of editor attraction and
retention in our local chapter so as to ensure the growth of WMKE as a
whole?

Through Having a number of Wikimedia Outreaches and Wiki Academies to
showcase and teach people and members of the WMKE about editing and
the need to. The need to have our local content from our own
perspective is very vital.

 6. Now that we are an independent chapter, how do you plan to
raise funds supposing the parent Wikimedia Foundation won't avail
funds to run the aforementioned project?

Through Local Partnerships and campaigns on the social media to
sensitize people on WMKE and the need to preserve our Knowledge.
Accepting donations via local means eg Mpesa as low as 100 will allow
us to reach to the large audience and help us raise funds.

 7. What kind of a project/ activity would you envision WMKE and
its members undertake in order to fulfill the objectives of Wikimedia
Foundation as a whole?

Outreach and Wiki Academys would help us Attract and Retain editors
and at the asem time contribute knowledge to Wikimedia
Projects...which are the key Wikimedia Foundation Key Goals and
Objectives.

The answer to the question by Abbas is that when we were looking for
someone to sent to Tanzania in November last year we had a number of
people who had indicated interest to attend me included and we only
needed one person, in my firm beleive that we need more members to get
new experience I offered to withdraw my intend to attend and to
support a member who had not participated before thus endorsed Steve

Dear electoral team,

By establishing the wiki page, I didn't mean that everyone had to use this
now. Some may find it easier to send email (and for some, it may even be the
only option). So please, as part of your responsibilities as electoral
committee, can you copy and paste answers posted on the list to the correct
sub-page of our WMKE wiki? Thanks!

[Wikimedia Kenya] Election Processes

2012-03-29 Thread Alex Wafula
Hi all,

So we (me and Steve) just got back to the hostel back in Berlin (12:45 am).
We have been on tour and a welcome party the whole day and haven't had a
chance to see/reply to the questions as per the deadline (6:00 pm) so I'm
requesting an extension of this time.

To the electrol team, kindly come up with a schedule (including timelines
and milestones) of the whole election process and document them here:
http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections so that we can plan ahead of time
for such instances. I'd also request to wikify these stuff instead of doing
it over emails. I've moved all the Qs I received here and will answer them
on the same page: http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections/Q2Wafula

If you make anymore changes and have new documentation, do wikify them
instead of doing it over email, it makes follow-ups difficult. Well, these
are just my recommendations/thoughts for your consideration.

cheers,
Alex

2012-03-29 Thread Abbas Mahmood

OK, Since it seems that Isaac's preferential mode of answering the questions is
via this list, I will engage him here.
Isaac, I am not sure whether you understood my question. What I basically asked
is for you to tell me of an incident, if any, where you led a group that had
divergent to achieve consensus. In the scenario that you just gave, 1) you
withdrew your nomination and 2) I fail to see the part where you were able to
convince us to let Stephen go to Tanzania, since there weren't any members who
(openly) opposed to Stephen's going. [You can check the archives to see the
role that you played when we were discussing the Tanzania training:
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediake/2011-November/thread.html]

Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] Election Processes

2012-03-29 Thread Chris Riwa
Hi Alex and Steve

SnipSo we (me and Steve) just got back to the hostel back in Berlin
(12:45 am). We have been on tour and a welcome party the whole day and
haven't had a chance to see/reply to the questions as per the deadline
(6:00 pm) so I'm requesting an extension of this time.

First I would like to congratulate you guys for representing us in Berlin.
I know it is quite demanding for you guys but I on the other hand it shows
the level of your dedication to this Chapter. Since we are also running out
of time we'll expect your responses to be up by Today Friday,30th March at
1600Hrs latest (Kenyan time since I understand you are only an hour
behind). Any difficulty should be communicated ASAP.

SnipTo the electrol team, kindly come up with a schedule (including
timelines and milestones) of the whole election process and document them
here: http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections so that we can plan ahead of
 time for such instances.

I think it is a bit too late for this as the elections are still scheduled
for tomorrow as it was planned initially. However, sufficient efforts have
been made to notify you guys and everyone on the next activity to be
undertaken (QA session).

I'd also request to wikify these stuff instead of doing it over emails.
I've moved all the Qs I received here and will answer them on the same
 page: http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections/Q2Wafula

This has already been catered for and you can post your responses on this
page first: http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections/Q%26A then later respond
to the individual questions on your individual pages.
*For Alex:* http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections/Q2Wafula
*For Steve*: http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections/Q2Wanjau

If you make anymore changes and have new documentation, do wikify them
instead of doing it over email, it makes follow-ups difficult. Well, these
are just my recommendations/thoughts for your consideration.

We will definately let you know in case of any changes.
On behalf of the electoral team,
Regards

 changed
now. For further questions, I've created individual question pages for
  each
  candidate.
Btw, any news from Alex and Steve with regard to their answers?
  Best wishes,
  BT

we Chris ,Cliff I settled for mailing list cz we were guided by
 the
reasoning that it was a more popular platform than the wiki cz
 looking
members contributions on matters at the wiki attracted less traffic
than the list ,we missed to put into considerations some issues ,we
therefor will do with the wiki as Chris populates it

Hi all,

As Chris has started to edit the QA wiki page at
http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections/Q%26A, I presume that's
 become
official now. I guess, Chris will insert the candidates' answers
 which
   have
been posted onto this list now also onto the wiki page.

Candidates, please answer members' questions directly on your
 personal
questions' page, i.e.

Ann, go to http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections/Q2Njeri

Isaac, go to http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections/Q2Kosgei

David, go to http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections/Q2Mugo

Ednah, go to http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections/Q2Ednah

Oscar, go to http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections/Q2Limoke

And everyone can then read up the answers at those pages.

Happy campaigning :-)

Abbas,

The name of the candidate answering appears in the subject line.
 As I
   too
had problems with reading the answers in unformatted email
 messages,
   I've
set up a page on our WMKE wiki
(http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections/Q%26A) plus corresponding
 sub-
   pages
with your further question to each candidate, and hope that this
 can
  be
   used
by us. If my proposal doesn't meet with approval, I'm happy to have
   those
pages deleted again (I haven't even copied in the answers of the
   candidates
yet as I don't want to bypass the electoral committee).

Best wishes,

Oliver (aka BT)

Branton,

It is quite unclear which candidate answered these questions.
 Please
clarify. Also, do indicate whether these Q's are coming from the
   electoral
team or ordinary members.

Abbas.
