[Wikimediauk-l] Schools wikipedia memory sticks

2008-12-04 Thread Andrew Cates
We have the schools wikipedia on a 4Gb memory stick now available if anyone
who has previously expressed legit interest would like a copy. Please email
me your postal address WITHOUT the string "wiki" anywhere in the message
title (or I may not see it for a while)

DVDs will be another few weeks: we are giving requests from Africa priority
and are on a reburn.

If anyone has ideas for interested journalists who might like a memory stick
please let me know as above.

Thanks

Andrew/ BozMo

It was a real mix - some members saw the membership fee as a kind of
donation and didn't ask for anything much in return. We sent out
useful information, as well as information on what we were doing, and
some members joined mostly for that. We also gave advice (not
something the chapter will be doing), and a lot of members joined for
that - but they didn't usually need ongoing advice, so it was
important that they began having some other involvement.

Only a minority of members - probably a small minority - joined with
the intention of getting involved in the governance of the
organisation, but it was good that the others had the opportunity.
Plenty of members, over time, decided to get involved with proposing
activities or policies, standing for the board, and attending AGMs.
If people join us as friends, that introduces an extra hurdle in
getting them involved in the chapter in this way.

Best Wishes
Mickey

No-one has disagreed with that. What you're suggesting is *forcing*
certain people not to become guarantor members. That is the part that
is undemocratic.

OK, I take this point!

So what did they these members do? Just pay their fees?

I am sure there is some guesswork here.

And yes, I agree, WMUK must be democratic. I am trying to suggest
that making every "supporting member" become a guarantor member (or
become nothing) might not be the best way forward.
