Most of it probably overlaps with the late 1940s photo survey that is
available through the national archives if you are prepared to digitalise
it.

Spotted this. The rights issues around the material would no doubt be
interesting, but this might be something where we could offer some
funding to offset the costs of digitisation/storage, and look to get a
tranche of the material onto Commons.

Thoughts?

Andrew.

Folks,

Sheffield University has some surplus aerial imagery that could be available
to us if we wish to have it. Its described as a considerable collection
(amounting to around 6 filling
cabinets) of UK (mostly England, and mainly northern England) black & white
9" x 9" photographic prints, dating from around WWII to the early 1980s.
There are a few index sheets, many of the boxed sets are labelled.

I've asked for some more details so that we might consider storage
requirements (They are currently temporarily stored in a garage but need to
be in a dry low humidity room really) and should get some photos of what it
all looks like in the next few days.

In the meantime two questions for UK OSMers:

1. Do you think this is a resource that we should go for and build upon as a
sub-project within OSM?
2. How should we best deal with physical storage until such time as items
can be digitised. The question about what to do with documents (same applies
to all the map sheets I have) after digitising can be left till a later
date.

I'm less worried about scanning and managing the files now as I have
sufficient scanning equipment to cover most bases and disk space attached to
an OSM sever doesn't appear to be an issue. We would need to come up with
tools and methods of turning them into a seamless mosaic but I'm sure given
the task there's a workable solution for that too.

All thoughts, suggestions and offers welcome.

Cheers
Andy

Congratulations on the appointment. It doesn't seem so long since GLAM
took off at the BM, and yet the GLAMscape has changed a fair bit.

Dear Wikimedia UK,

This week I have started work as your GLAM organiser, and for those of you
who haven't followed our WMUK blog

would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself.

Hopefully I will get the opportunity to talk to a lot of you in a week's
time at the GLAM Wiki event. But if you aren't coming to that and you want
to know more about our outreach work involving Galleries, Libraries,
Archives and Museums then please get in touch.

[Wikimediauk-l] Boosting the GGIC

2013-04-05 Thread Charles Matthews
Please find time over the weekend to find "reasons to be cheerful"
(see Ian Dury) about the Google Global Impact Challenge and the
opportunity it presents. Two candidates are up at
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Google_Global_Impact_Challenge .

For example, either project there would bring WMUK into serious
software development, and so the charity would move to having a
project manager whose expertise would be useful also on other fronts.

One more of my own: the discussion on this list and last year of
online education and WMUK showed that the community found the subject
engaging and fruitful. We are now implementing a VLE, which is a
nitty-gritty business but one that moves WMUK up the learning curve on
all the points raised before. Entering the Challenge in this area
would contribute to that process.

Being shortlisted (10 projects) is perfectly reasonable as an
ambition, and would be excellent publicity for the chapter.

There isn't a box on the entry form at
https://services.google.com/fb/forms/impactchallenge/ saying exactly
"tell us about yourself". It is more like an interview that starts
with easy questions, and moves gradually to the tricky stuff. There is
a box "why is your organisation poised for success?" We shouldn';t
be shy. "We wrote the world's largest reference work on a shoestring,
ignoring naysaying and preconceptions, and all we really needed was
good word-of-mouth. Just try and stop us."

Please support vocally the idea that the form should be filled in, on
your behalf.
