Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Proposed election night editathon

2017-04-21 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
I think there are three options, 1) an editathon in the run up to the
election, possibly with Full Fact, to try to ensure Wikipedia contains
accurate information about the main Parties, key politicians etc, 2) An
editathon on the day/night of the election - although I appreciate Ed's
point about the practicalities of that given that results come in
overnight, or 3) an event following the election when we will have the
results to work with. I do wonder if people might have a bit of election
fatigue afterwards? Or perhaps that's just me and Brenda. If there are any
trainers/volunteers who are particularly interested, do let us know. All
best, Lucy

How are we with getting good free images of MPs? Or at least of
candidates. We have some terrible snapshots of UK politicians ...
anyone who's a party member who could talk to their party about
getting good photos, or freeing up original photos?

[Wikimediauk-l] Proposed election night editathon

2017-04-21 Thread Ed Hand
Thinking back to the editathon we ran at the time of the last election,
there was quite a long wait until much in the way of new MPs were elected,
and by that time people were tired and/or enthusiasm had waned.

There will be a number of candidates for safe seats for whom we can start
draft pages in anticipation of their election being announced later that
evening/morning. If we could identify such candidates ahead of time, then
editors would have something worthwhile to do whilst we await the actual
constituency results.

By way of example, anticipating a very likely Labour victory in the 2016
Tooting by-election after Sadiq Khan stood down to become mayor, I started
an article on the Labour candidate:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosena_Allin-Khan

An AfD was started the next day, and the article was deleted:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Rosena_Allin-Khan

After she won, the article was reinstated. If I had just done that article
as a draft, there would have been no need for an AfD.

Candidates are not eligible for their own pages, but, for example, they
could be put on pages like this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_Hamlets_(UK_Parliament_constituency)

Wikidata, not sure, but tends to be much more lax about these kind of
things.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Election Edit-a-thon

2017-04-21 Thread John Lubbock
I'm not sure about that Ed. I've encountered this issue before and the
notability criteria for politicians is quite clear that they have to be
elected to merit a page, I believe. I would assume the same applies for
Wikidata?

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Election Edit-a-thon

2017-04-21 Thread Edward Saperia
I think it'd be good to have the GE candidates as they're announced as
well, maybe we can do something around that?

Take a look at this, by the way - bit.ly/GE2017TechInitiatives - I am sure
wikipedians can improve this resource, or use it to improve wikipedia etc.

I won't be doing anything pro-active on the edit-a-thon front but I will
offer the space and support anyone organising - If anyone decides they want
to lead on this, please keep me updated. All you need to do is promote,
really.

In 2015 we had an editathon on the night of the election
