Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Architecture & sandstone carvings

2019-03-13 Thread Delphine Dallison
Hi Sara,

Not a wikimedian as such, but I think the project might be of interest to the
architecture librarian David Buri at the Glasgow School of Art. He has
previously received training on how to edit Wikipedia and has done some editing
himself, but I think in this occurrence, he might be a better resource in terms
providing sources for citations, etc… If this is of interest, let me know and
I’ll send you his contact info.

Hello all,

Hope you're having a good Wednesday. I'm currently working with the Dumfries
Historic Buildings Trust on the Dumfries Stonecarving Project, (there was a wee
blog about this last year:
https://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2018/11/green-men-gargoyles-the-dumfries-stonecarving-project/<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.wikimedia.org.uk%2F2018%2F11%2Fgreen-men-gargoyles-the-dumfries-stonecarving-project%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cd.dallison%40scottishlibraries.org%7Cca98ca54180649fc552708d6a7bbb1ee%7C6414ad35a3824075ab2600ed2b7adb76%7C0%7C0%7C636880821926130646&sdata=LgP%2BU1CAT%2FWlcGwB8gxlKWPLeZAC97PwKRJIwAIwlII%3D&reserved=0>)
and we're now moving toward the next phase. This will include volunteer groups
carrying out research, writing articles about notable local subjects, and
integrating some of the pictures that have been taken into the encyclopedia.

As well as articles which pertain to local history and places, my feeling is
that there may well be a range of other articles relating to architecture, etc,
which might be usefully incorporated into a worklist for one of the editathons
which will form a part of this next phase.

I wondered if there were any wikimedians on this list with an interest in
architecture/ stonecarving who might be interested in helping me to explore
this? I'd love to have a chat some time. (Please do email me direct rather than
on-list, just for the sake of everyone's inboxes)

All the best
Sara

Subject: [Wikimediauk-l] International Women’s Day, 8 March 2019

Dear all,

The University of Edinburgh's Information Services Group are celebrating
International Women’s Day on 8th March by renaming the Boardroom in Argyle
House after Brenda Moon, the first woman to head up a research university
library when she was Librarian here at the University of Edinburgh in the 1980s
and 90s. Brenda played a major role in bringing the University into the digital
age, as Edinburgh became the first major university library in the UK to tackle
and deliver a computer-based service.

Two events will coincide with the launch of the Brenda Moon Room: our
Wikimedian in Residence will be hosting a Wikipedia-editing session for staff,
students and friends of the University to create Wikipedia entries for notable
women currently missing from the encyclopaedia site, and at the Main Library,
LTW Equality and Diversity Images Intern Francesca Vavotici will be hosting a
‘Sketch-a-thon’ using images from the Centre for Research Collections’ Special
Collections. All artistic abilities welcome!

Wikipedia Editathon – Women of Edinburgh:

This event is open to staff, students and friends of the University and is an
opportunity to help add more notable women associated with Edinburgh to
Wikipedia, where only 18% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about
women.

Time: 11:00am – 5pm

Venue: Argyle House, 3 Lady Lawson Street, Edinburgh EH3 9DR

The bare "qrpedia.org" works fine too as it redirects to the https version. I'm
not sure what the solution is for the http version, other than redirecting

That is indeed the case; but the http:// version is supposed to work, too.

The http:// version and the bare "qrpedia.org" are linked to by many external
websites; and are no doubt also in print sources. This affects more than just
the one person who tweeted.

Subject: [Wikimediauk-l] Can you help us review images for Wiki Loves Monuments
UK 2018?

Hi list

Wikimedia UK is supporting the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest again this
year, and I am looking for 20-25 volunteers to help review and filter the
entries.

The contest finishes at the end of September, with reviewing and judging taking
place immediately after that. We normally have several rounds of reviewing
during October, enabling us to reduce the expected 10,000+ entries down to a
long list of a few hundred from which the winners are selected by our panel of
judges.

You'd need to be able to commit to a minimum of 5-8 hours online reviewing,
spread out over the month of October. As reviewing is done online, volunteers
can be based anywhere in the world and you don't need to have any UK
connections. We’re not looking for expert photographers, but you should have a
basic ability to be able to distinguish a good photograph from a poor or
mediocre one. Training in the online reviewing software is available.

If you are able to help, or if you'd like more information, please let me know.

Regards

Michael

Piggybacking off of this,
Freenode.Live<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffreenode.live%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cd.dallison%40scottishlibraries.org%7C898839b0923943c009da08d5dea68d03%7C6414ad35a3824075ab2600ed2b7adb76%7C1%7C1%7C636659729267337825&sdata=hn7Hcii5sJyEmUfdhIEa%2BWKPjRyGdR%2FUwabIeO7YMbU%3D&reserved=0>

The Wikimedia community heavily uses Freenode

so we'd be well placed to have a presence there too!

I'm aiming to be at Mozfest (tickets permitting!) and Freenode.Live.

A couple of obvious topics could be:

(1) Web Literacy - the ability to contribute to Wikimedia projects is a
high-level transferable skill worth promoting. Remember that the skills
required to contribute to Wikipedia, for example, include researching and
collating sources, summarising, writing, and collaboration.

(2) Digital Inclusion - we have many people in the UK for whom English is not
their first language. With so much of the internet delivered in English, there
is a cultural bias toward English. Wikimedia projects have the capacity to
allow people of varied backgrounds to contribute from their own cultural
perspective and to help preserve their heritage. WMUK has experience working
with both the traditional groups of Welsh and Scots, and also modern groups
like the Asian, Polish, and Balkan communities. I'm sure you're aware of others.

In either case, a session could be made with a brief introduction to WMUK and
the work we do, followed by a hands-on editing session to give participants a
taste of what is possible. Round it out with an invitation to keep in touch
with WMUK and join the Wikimedia editing community.

Obviously, those are just first thoughts, but I think we have such a good track
record that it would be a shame if we couldn't put something together for
MozFest.

Hello Wikimedians, as usual, I am starting to collate ideas for our Quarter 2
newsletter, and I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who is working on
an interesting project and would like to write a short summary of it for the
newsletter. It's not easy to create all the content we need for various
publications without help from other people, and I always encourage people to
get in touch if they have something they would like to write about for the blog

Looking forward to hearing from people!

officially take photographs for Wikimedia Commons and get privileged
access, media passes can be requested up until 22 June.[1] Remember
that we have an easy way to put freely released LGBT+ related
photographs on Wikimedia Commons, see the LGBT Free Media
collective.[2]

Throughout June the international WikiLovesPride is running, so
regardless of where you are, it's a great time to take a look at
improving Wikipedia articles on LGBT+ history or biographies.[3] The
history of the London gay rights marches and Pride parades looks
skimpy and out of date, missing changes like the growing size of the
event, now the third largest LGBT+ parade in the world, being awarded
the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, and there being no mention of
UK Black Pride events which run in parallel and are notable enough for
a stand alone article. It's these primary Wikipedia articles and
related photographs that journalists rely on when they are reporting
on Pride events.[4]

Pride in London training for stewards has started, and lots more
volunteers are needed (it takes hundreds of stewards for the Parade
alone). It's easy to book yourself in and the session lasts an hour.
If you cannot get to Southwark for training, there will be remote
digital training sessions too. I went on the first course last
weekend, and for the first time I'll be a senior steward on the day.
Drop me a note if you want to ask about it. If you are media savvy and
can help out with tweets and photographs to support the event, there
are calls for volunteers for those activities too.[5][6]
