[Wikisource-l] WCUG - Wikimedia Movement Charter

2024-07-02 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
 Hello everyone!

You may have heard of the Wikimedia Movement Charter (if not, you can read
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Charter).

As an affiliate, we - the Wikisource Community Usergroup - have a vote (and
you also have an individual vote, see the previous link).

Please fill this poll: https://wudele.toolforge.org/KYqYxWnnCa5qPxEj before
July 8th so I can then cast the vote for the entire group. Feel free to use
the comment section if you have any.

Cheers,
Nicolas

2024-04-08 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi,

Indeed some things have been lost in the process... but you could
still do similar archives for some of them (and indeed archiving is
always a good idea).

For instance, https://wsstats.toolforge.org/stats/br/alltime is still
pretty similar to
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikisource_20230404_pages_br.svg
and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikisource_20230404_texts_br.svg

Hi Lars,

Thanks for pointing this out. It was announced on Phabricator
(https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T319965) and on some scriptoriums
but not here.

Phetools (and many other tools) were recently broken, thanks to Sohom

[Wikisource-l] 2022 report

2023-08-25 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi y'all,

As I realized during Wikidata, the user group is *very* late for the 2022
report.
I started a report here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikisource_Community_User_Group/2022_Report
but I was a bit away in 2022 (because of my residency) so I may have missed
important events.
If so, please tell me or directly add them to the report.
The goal is to send the report before the end of August.

PS: I'm also working on a report for what happened at Wikimania (and there
is a lot to say ;) ).

Cheers,
Nicolas

[Wikisource-l] Re: Google not indexing Wikisource for last few years now.

2023-08-01 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Thanks Ilario,
That's very good general advice but would you have more concrete and
specific ones?
For instance, what would you change on
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Baltimore_American/Volume_192/Issue_34,925/Travel_by_Balloon
or
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Poetical_Works_of_William_Motherwell/The_Crusader%27s_Farewell
?

For everyone :
Plus, the problem is not *better* indexing (that would be great of course),
the problem here is that a lot (if not most) Wikisource pages are *not*
indexed!
If you type "when men went up in balloons" or "The banners rustle in the
breeze" in Google (taken from the previous examples), Wikisource doesn't
appear at all (and for other examples, when it does, it's incomplete and
with a long delay of - at least - several months, the first example was
done last week, the second was created in February!).
That's why some of us suspect something is wrong somewhere (maybe because
of the proofread extension ? and that Google doesn't "see" our pages.

Nicolas

[Wikisource-l] Wikisource user group participation in the Wikimedia Foundation elections

2022-07-06 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi all,

tldr: vote here to preselect candidate to the Foundation board
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1zKhQC-KbSdpfBm-8L0_AIkDTZd0qO8tlrzxTCFJUgVM

As you may know, this year is an election year for the board of the
Wikimedia Foundation. The process is a bit complicated, but here are the
two main steps for us as an user group :
- from now until July 15 : preselection (selection 6 of the 12 candidates)
- from August 15 to August 29 : final vote (selection of 2 of the 6
preselected candidates)
You can see all the details, including the candidates and the timeline on
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2022.

For this whole process, I am the primary contact who will cast the vote but
we *all* make the decision, I see myself as merely the messenger for the
group here.

For the first step, I invite you to vote on this Google forms :
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1zKhQC-KbSdpfBm-8L0_AIkDTZd0qO8tlrzxTCFJUgVM
You can select any candidate and how many as you want, the six persons with
the most vote "Yes" will be the one I'll cast. The vote starts today and
lasts a week, I'll close it on July 13th at 24:00 (UTC). I'll also share
the results here and on the Telegram group.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me (in public here or in
private).

[Wikisource-l] Re: International copyright and wikisource

2022-06-02 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi,

Some explanations/clarifications here :
- applicable law is a millennia old unsolved nightmare, but to make it
short, both US and local laws are applicable on Wikimedia Commons.
- when you say "Finnegans Wake by James Joyce", what are you talking
about exactly? There are a lot of editions, with a lot of
corresponding copyright (and I would say that some - if not most - of
them are already public domain in both the local country and US). Who
is the translator? What is the publication date in the US? Was there a
copyright notice?
- "internet barrier" is indeed not possible (hence my first point)
- "a German subsidiary legal entity" (or any/all other countries) has
already been discussed many times, in the end it's just not feasible
(see previous point) nor realistic (US law is probably still
applicable anyway).

PS: in any case, it will clearly be public domain in the US in 2035,
which is quite soon (we have files marked to undelete as far as 2160
on Commons/Wikisource ;) ) and there is a lot more other work to
transcribe on Wikisource meanwhile.

Cheers,
Nicolas

[Wikisource-l] Re: Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Summit: Hybrid event on September 9-11, 2022

2022-04-06 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi y'all,

Thanks Bodhi. Indeed the deadline is *very* soon. I'll try to launch a
page to select the representative for the UG very soon (Saturday at
the latest).

Does anyone already want to be the candidate who goes there? (I'm
checking my calendar, but I'll probably won't be free to attend this
summit).

Cheers,
Nicolas

Hi y'all,

Thanks a lot Ruthven!
As said on the Telegram channel, I also made a proposition for a meetup

opportunity to talk).

For the record, the proposal deadline has been extended until tomorrow, so
if you have an idea or want to suggest a proposition around Wikisource,
don't hesitate! (I see there is no public individual proposal right now

Re: [Wikisource-l] Automatic text tagging and annotation

2020-07-28 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi all,

Some tools exists outside Wikisource, for instance I know
https://www.textrazor.com/demo who find the Qid of words in a text (very
good quality but proprietary) or https://ordia.toolforge.org/text-to-lexemes
(crude but open, based on SPARQL and for Lexemes), that can generate
annotation on the fly.
It's not easy (there is a lot of questions) but I'm confident that some
things are doable (at least as a POC).

Re: [Wikisource-l] [Brand Project] Next naming phase

2020-06-19 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi,

Sadly, I tend to agree with you Bodhisattwa! The proposals are
disheartening...

That said, I don't think this is completely pointless tho. The RfC (I'm
guessing you talk about
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_comment/Should_the_Foundation_call_itself_Wikipedia
) has been mostly unheard by the Foundation, that's is why - I think - this
is important to say it again on the official survey. That's why I think our
voices matter here.

If you didn't or don't have time to watch the whole video on Youtube, here
is the summary page of the 3 proposals :
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Wikimedia_brands/2030_movement_brand_project/Naming_convention_proposals
(with subpages for each proposal), which I can resume with the examples of
the renaming of the Wikimedia movement :
- option 1: Wikipedia Network
- option 2: Wikipedia Movement
- option 3: Wiki

All three options remove the term "Wikimedia" to replace it by "Wikipedia"
and indeed, there is no statu quo option... But we can still reject all
options (either say they're all "very bad" or rank them from "bad" to "very
bad", for me 1 and 3 are "very bad" and 2 is only "bad").

In any case, Wikisource and the Wikisource Community User Group will not be
rename and are not directly concerned by the current renaming. Still, I
think that the name "Wikipedia" overtaking the whole movement is a bad
symbol and an invisibilization of other Wikimedia projects.

The survey is long (and all questions mandatory) but I encourage you to
still fill it personally and to help me to find the answer for the
affiliate filling. Before answering it, you can see the question on
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Wikimedia_brands/2030_movement_brand_project/Naming_convention_proposals/Survey_text
to have an overview.

Should we create a page on meta to collect our point of view and prepare
the global answer? or do you prefer to talk by mails? (you can send me a
private mail if you don't want to speak on this public list, I'm also
available on various social medias, feel free to get in touch with me).

Cheers,
~nicolas

[Wikisource-l] [Brand Project] Next naming phase

2020-06-16 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi y'all,

In case you didn't see it already, here is a reminder that the Naming
Convention Proposals Presentation will start in ~4 hours at 15:00 UTC

on YouTube : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3zlBGHHHiY

Something that you may not know, is that the Wikisource Community User
Group has a voice in this process.
More exactly here is a copy-paste of a mail I received yesterday from Samir
Elsharbaty (Community Brand and Marketing coordinator at the Wikimedia
Foundation):

*Feedback period: For affiliates and individuals from 16 June to 30 June
2020. A collective feedback survey link will be shared with your email
addresses next week. This survey is a primary way for affiliates to submit
feedback as a group on the proposals. If you would like to change the email
address we send the survey to, please let us know. Affiliate Liaisons: The
most straightforward way for your affiliate to provide feedback during this
phase and the upcoming ones is by designating an affiliate liaison to be a
connection point between our team and your affiliate. If you are interested
in designating a liaison to receive updates and facilitate discussions,
please reply to this email.*

I proposed my name to be the liaison for the Wikisource Community UG, if
anyone else is interested, they can join or even replace me.
And if you have any comments or remarks about the propositions, please
share them (before end of June) so I can then share them in the survey.

Cheers,
Nicolas

Hi all,

This is indeed an excellent news that brightens my day. Welcome Sohom Datta!

I totally trust the co-mentors to help him but is there something that we -
the community - can do to help?

2020-03-14 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi,

That's a really great news! Thanks for sharing it.
I browse quickly the content they have and wow, this is really
multilingual. I even found some bilingual books with Breton (mislabelled as
French) and I saw a lot of other minority languages!

Do you already know what the next steps will be? Do you need help?

Re: [Wikisource-l] Wikisource at the Wikimedia Summit 2020

2019-12-13 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi all,

So according to the framadate (https://framadate.org/DWcnhfcsWQRjFKhP) we
have equality for Saturday and Sunday but Mohsen didn't vote and said he
preferred Saturday (IIRC).
If there is no objection, then the meeting is tomorrow Saturday at 13:00 (1
pm) UTC (time conversion:
https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html?iso=20191214T13=195=176=263
).

The meeting will be at this URL: https://meet.jit.si/WCUG (just click the
link, no account needed ; you may get a "Browser warning" but most of the
time it's relevant, the Jitsi devs are tweaking things right now
apparently).
We will take notes on this pad: https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/WCUG
(I already included the four questions about Movement Strategy, is that the
"essay" you are talking about Jim? ping @Bodhisattwa and @Mohsen as you two
are in Strategy working groups your input would be valuable, feel free to
comment in the pad before the meeting ;) ).

See you tomorrow!

Cheers, ~nicolas

Re: [Wikisource-l] Wikisource at the Wikimedia Summit 2020

2019-12-10 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi,

To make it clear, I'm candidate to go to the Summit.
I'm not sure if I'm the best person to represent this user group (UG) as
the Summit is a « focused event for conversations on Movement Strategy »
and I'm not always good at Strategy (especially for such a broad group like
this UG, indeed we need priorities, hence this meeting ;) ). That said, I
have a long experience of Wikisource, I was the representative for this UG
in 2018 so I'm not the worst person either ;)

For the meeting, I'm also available this week. I guess to gather the most
people sunday at 1 pm UTC (13:00) is probably the best for everyone (

[Wikisource-l] Wikisource at the Wikimedia Summit 2020

2019-12-10 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi all,

This year again, we need to select the representative of the Wikisource
Community User Group to the Wikimedia Summit 2020. This year summit is even
more focused on strategy and the deadline is December 16.

There was some issues with last year process (as pointed by Gurlal report)
and time is short, so I think the best would be an online meeting sometimes
this week (when ?).
Who is interested and available ? (both for the meeting but also to go to
Berlin).

Cheers,
Nicolas

Hi all,

There is only 5 days left to vote on
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2020/Wikisource.
Each vote count!

Some proposals already have a lot of support (like the ebook export
,
no surprise here) but most only have a few vote and could use more support.
I would really appreciate if everyone could take some minutes to read and
support the wishes !

Cheers,
Nicolas

Just some news (mainly about tech-related subject) on what happened
recently on and around the Wikisource galaxy:
- the Community Wishlist Survey 2020 is still open for proposal for one
week, right now on a total of 69 proposals, 25 are about Wikisource!
Quantity is good but let's focus also on quality, don't hesitate to comment
and improve the existing proposals on
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2020/Wikisource
- the WikidataCon was 25-26 October in Berlin. There was a Wikisource
meetup and I also did a lightning talk about Wikidata (the video is here
https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2019-18-lightning_talks_1#t=2377 )
- and last but not least, the Hindi Wikisource was (finally) created. The
bug is apparently fully solved so there should be no more delay for the
next project creations, yeah !

Cheers,
~nicolas

2019-07-21 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi all,

Wikimania is in less than a month!
A lot of things related to Wikisource will happen there!

Here is a quick overview:
There will be a room with a full day of presentations about Transcription,
most of them being about Wikisource (see
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Program and
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Transcription) and a meetup (
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Meetups/Wikisource feel free to
sign up! and if you have suggestion of topics to talk about, please add
them to the Agenda section).

I can't wait to see some of you there, and for the others we will share as
much as we can (at least a report).

[Wikisource-l] Fwd: [All-affiliates] ASBS results

2019-06-13 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi all,

Here are the final official results of the Wikimedia Foundation board
election (with some more explanation on the process).

Subject: [All-affiliates] ASBS results

*Dear Wikimedians, We are writing to let you know the result of the
election for the 2 Affiliate Selected Board Seats on the Wikimedia
Foundation board. The successful candidates were Nataliia Tymkiv and Shani
Evenstein Sigalov. A total of 122 affiliates voted, 85% of the 143 eligible
to vote, which is a record. As you know the election was conducted under a
variation of the Single Transferable Vote, which meant that prorated votes
were redistributed between candidates to come up with the final result. In
the 10th step of counting the final place, after Nataliia Tymkiv was
elected, was between Shani Evenstein Sigalov (40.519678) and Richard Knipel
(40.480322). We have put the full count narrative on meta so that others
can verify it if they wish.[1] It is the closest ASBS result for some time,
and all candidates brought very valuable perspectives to the work of the
WMF. In the 9th step of counting Reda Kerbouche lost by a very small
margin. Adding a ballot with rank #1 for Richard or Reda would result in
them being elected instead of Shani. The same goes for removing a ballot.
Changing the ranking on one of the ballots in a specific can way can result
in a different outcome for the second seat. This is an election in which
every vote counts. As in any election, there is a chance that some voters
misinterpreted the instructions and voted wrongly. We don't see a
justification for an action as extraordinary and controversial as opening
votes for review after the vote period is over. The instructions were
visible and clear: "Rank any candidate from 1 (your preferred candidate) to
11 (your least preferred candidate)." After voting, voters received a
confirmation email stating the name of each candidate they voted with the
number of their rank: Rank 1, Rank 2, ... The agency of voters should be
respected. As part of the retrospective we may identify areas of
improvements on our side, but still the process was quite simple and
documented. Some voters realized they made a mistake and requested a new
ballot. New ballots were issued in those cases. This choice was done
because of the specific situation of this election, since the process was
complex for new affiliates and participation, diversity and inclusion were
a clear goal.[2] We have published on meta information about who got a new
ballot within the voting deadline.[3] The Election Facilitators have been
available nearly 24 hours a day monitoring the various communication
channels to answer any questions affiliates might have. We did our best at
answering all of them. After our own scrutiny of the data, and based on our
experience in community processes, we strongly advise the community to
respect the integrity of the process, and advise against allowing any
modifications of votes at this point. If the votes had been reopened for
modification with or without publishing vote results, that would have
caused significant confusion and criticism that could have jeopardized the
entire election. We will publish a debrief with recommendations for a next
ASBS process on meta.[4] We invite all representatives of affiliates to a
feedback session at Wikimania.[5] We would like to congratulate Nataliia
Tymkiv and Shani Evenstein Sigalov and thank everyone who stood. Regards,

Hi all,

The vote is now closed, thank you all for participating.

I just voted, here is the global result from your votes that I put in a
calculator (https://www.cse.wustl.edu/~legrand/rbvote/calc.html) :

Nataliia > Reda > Christophe > Yuri > Maor > Richard > Douglas > Shani >
Taweetham > Kayode > Gerald

I won't give details as each vote must remain anonymous but I can tell that
there was a strong preference for Nataliaa.

Re: [Wikisource-l] Affiliate-selected Board seats

2019-05-12 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi all,

The voting period is now open.
Do we want to want to vote as a group? (I'm a bit concerned no-one even
aswered my previous email :/ ) and if so, how should we procede? I was
thinking about an internal vote, and take the results but I fear there will
be too few votes to be representative of the group. I need you, *we *and *you
*need you!
So the big question is: should I launch the internal vote and is anyone
interrested? (for obvious reasons, it would be good that someone assist me
to make sure everything is going fine).

For information, there is 12 candidates (listed with statements on
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliate-selected_Board_seats/2019/Nominations,
including the two seats whose terms have expired) and as remarked, none «
mentioned Wikisource specifically in their candidate statement » (source:
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:News/2019-05 ).

[Wikisource-l] Affiliate-selected Board seats

2019-04-17 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi all,

As you may know, the election of the Affiliate-selected Board seats (ASBS)
has begun.
We, as the Wikisource Community User Group, can take part in this election
and elected two person to the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation.
The meta page
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliate-selected_Board_seats/2019 give
some lengthy informations, here is a quick summary:
- since April 15 and until April 30, people will candidate to seat at the
board, at this step we can ask question to candidates and *endorse* two
candidates.
- between May 8 and May 31, we can vote.

For this whole process, I am the primary contact but we *all* make the
decision, I'm merely the messenger of the group here.

Here is how I suggest to proceed:
- right now, write together questions and criteria for candidate we want to
endorse (WMNL shared this table to help
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Assessing_candidates_for_the_Affiliate-selected_Board_seats_of_the_Board_of_Trustees.pdf
but it's very general, we should adapt it to this usergroup needs ; here is
copy of this table https://lite.framacalc.org/asbs2019-wcug we can work
on). You can also ask question in your own name.
- in May, we vote for the candidates inside the user group (not sure how to
best handle this part, I would prefer it to be public but we can do it in
private too) and then, I will take the results and vote in the name of the
user group.
- is anyone interested to be the secondary contact? (I'm a bit busy so I
could use some help ;) )
- if you feel the need, we can do an online meeting to talk about it, but
as we are scattered all around the globe, finding a good timeslot is
challenging. Would anyone be interested? (or is this mailing list enough?)
- obviously, any question, idea, remark, suggestion are welcome!

[Wikisource-l] Selection of the representative to the Wikimedia Summit

2018-11-30 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi all,

The deadline is short and to avoid the confusing vote by email of last
year, we created a page on meta to decide who will be the representative of
the user group to the Wikimedia Summit:
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikisource_Community_User_Group/Wikimedia_Summit_2019>*

The vote will be in two parts:
- starting tomorrow and for a week, people can add their name and a short
explanation on who they are and why they want to go to the summit
- next week, the community vote to designate the representative

For the context, Wikimedia Summit will be in Berlin, 29 March - 2 April
2019 (last year, it was called "Wikimedia Conference" and "Chapters
Meeting" the previous years).
Here is a short report on what happened last year:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2018/Wikisource_Community_User_Group
.
This year, fewer people are invited (one instead of two for us) and the
summit will focus on strategy and governance.
As usual, feel free to ask more and any question.

*Disclaimer: I probably won't candidate myself, except if there is 2 or
less candidates.*

Cheers,
For the Wikisource Community User Group,

[Wikisource-l] Voting for Community Wishlist Survey 2018

2018-11-18 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
 Hi all!

The voting period is now opened until 30 November.
You can see the proposals for Wikisource and enter your votes here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2019/Wikisource

It is *very* important to vote (even if you don't fully agree on how the
proposal is written), the Foundation tech team looks at all proposals but
only the top 10 wishes are sure to be addressed. So the more vote there is,
the better chance that the team will spend time and resource on the
proposal.

2018-11-07 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Oh !

Thank you Mohsen and don't be sorry! I was sure I did this report but
indeed I didn't, I'll take care of that next week.

By the way, I'm back for the GLAMwiki conference in Tel Aviv, where we
talked a lot about Wikisource (including in the official keynotes from the
Foundation \o/ ).
One point that came a lot was the lack of documentation about Wikisource
(I'm to blame here but apparently I'm not the only one ;) ). This is really
something we should work on.

[Wikisource-l] WMCON2018 report

2018-04-26 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi,

I'm quite busy right now so sadly we won't be able to give a full report
report of the Wikimedia Conference before next week (at best, there is so
much to tell!).

In the meantime, here two things to wait until the full report :
- the notes taken during the meetup
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2018/Thematic,_regional,_language-specific_meetups/Wikisource_Meetup
(thank you Balajijagadesh ! also Jayantanth, Econterms and everyone who was
here)
- the poster :
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikisource_-_WMCON2018_poster.pdf
(feel free to send me comments)

And no matter how busy I am, don't hesitate to contact me or to ask
question ;)

Cheers,
~nicolas

Re: [Wikisource-l] Wikisource meetup at WMCon

2018-04-18 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi,

Will try to make one but all the meetups are in the same time slot and
there is a lot already of meetups on this slot (and I'll represent
Wikisource at the Wikidata meetups as Wikisource specific needs need to be
aknowledge too).

Anyway, WMCON is a relative small events so if anyone has question, wants
or needs, please come directly to see me or Balaji to talk directly (which
can be even more effecient ;) ).

Not at all, read more carefully, this license is available only when you

If I understand correctly, Bodhisattwa, you want the same thing as P674 but
for people and non-fiction (instead of character and fiction).
AFAIK, that doesn't exist yet but you should ask for it (on

Hi,

On fr.ws we have two editions :
- 1821 with a scan ( https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q51434118 )
- 1922 without scan (because it's not PD-France, just PD-US pre-1923 ;
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q51435158 )

I left a message to ask for wikisorcerors to finish the proofreading of the

I will try to list all editions in French on

I'm available and I can go to Berlin in April (and I can talk about

So how should we decide?

The main difference is having a separate namespace A second major
difference is that the templates on fr.ws and en.ws are very light while
the {{Opera}} template took data from Wikidata (but that's an independent
problem, it's possible to change the {{Éditions}} or {{Versions}} templates
to do exactly the same thing without having a specific namespace).

I'm almost convinced too, but in order to create a new namespace on a
project you have to convinced the local community. That's why I'm still
playing the Devil's advocate role and want to learn about the inconvenients
of this system (for instance, since the name of the work is free to use,
does people often use it by mistake?).

I'm guessing you're talking about pages in
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Category:Author_disambiguation_pages (which
only exist on en.ws) but they are in the Author: namespace and (if Im' not
mistaken) the WS search tool here only look in the main namespace (as it's
focused on editions).

So this is a bit besides this mail thread but still, you are very right,
for people in particular and for everything in general, disambig pages are
indeed important and ideally the tool should not just discard them as 'not
edition' (if technically possible to spot them obviously).

The truth (and I guess it is universal but could someone confirm?) is that
pages with 'multiples editions' are 'works' (Q571, this is what I do for

Interesting.

It's a good start but I see a lot of things that need heavy improvements. I
tried for br and fr Wikisources.

Most importantly not everything on Wikisource is an edition (there is
disambig page and editions pages, for instance fr:s:Accroupissements a a
work not an edition, it should detect that and change the P31 accordingly)
Then the description is put on « Dfr "edition of Accroupissements by ,
Arthur Rimbaud" », it should be Den not Dfr, there shouldn't be a comma
here, and ideally we should add description in multiple languages (maybe
with an external bot ?).
Some others data could probably easily be added (P996
 and P1957
 at least and maybe P1476
 too)

But this has the potential to be a very good tool!

For information, the WikidataCon is this week-end in Berlin. While there is
no talk nominatively around Wikisource, there is some intervention on
relation subjects (inventaire.io, WikiCite, German National Library, FRBR,
and so on).

The event is sold out, but you can follow remotely some of the presentation
(link will be added here :
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikidataCon_2017/Program/Remote ).

I'll be there and I'll be happy to talk about Wikisource, who else will be
there?

Re: [Wikisource-l] Validated works on kowikisource?

2017-10-12 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi,

The validation-status data can and sometimes is stored in Wikidata. See how
it is stored here : https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Badges and here an
example of Wikidata query for all items about validated text :
http://tinyurl.com/yaud3uoy

Thad said, most of the times Wikidata is not up-to-date, and there should
be a tool to take care of that instead of human being.

2017-10-11 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi Anne,

Thank you for the confirmation.

I've got a question both for you and for the wikisourcerers, do we want and
should we keep using WSexport or should we try to integrate WSexport
functionalities into more general tool? (for the second option, we need to
exchange about our specific needs and desires).

My point of view is that we are quite happy with WSexport right now so we
could say « if it ain't broken don't fix it » but on the other hand the
maintain a specific tool tailored for our specifities but it could be
useful for others and there is always the risk that nobody maintain it
anymore (a more general tool generally - but not always - having more
chances of being maintain).
I'd like to hear you point of view and the point of view of people
maintaining WSexport (mainly our beloved wikisourcerer supreme Tpt ;) )

Re: [Wikisource-l] [Offline-l] FYI - WMF pausing and deprecating some functionality

2017-10-11 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Hi everyone,

Maybe I'm misunderstood the situation but I'm not sure to understand the
problem: does anyone use OCG?

I thought that not one use it anymore (if it was ever used... at least onf
the French wikisource it never really worked well as it didn't understand
the 'pages' tag we use on almost all pages) and we have our own
PDF/ePub/mobi generator (https://tools.wmflabs.org/wsexport/tool/book.php).
SO don't we all use WSexport?

I see very few pages on
https://en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Special:PrefixIndex=Wikisource:Books/
, most of them generated a long time ago, so I don't think that this will
have any impact on Wikisource.

Latin and Sanskrit are not entirely dead and are much more active than most
languages of the planet (more than Breton or Venitian).
I"m not sure, we have the same understanding of « goal », for me it's a
direction, something we should tend toward too, not an obligation that have
to be met.

Good question. We should store clearly this information somewhere (on

Exactly.
I can easily find to 10 works in most languages of the planet (The Bible,
the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Shakespeare, Conan Doyle,
Dickens, Stevenson, Verne, some important international treaty and
publication from the Vatican ; it's already a lot more than 10 works
available in more than 100 languages)

I'll probably go as it's a great opportunity to remind the GLAM what
wonderful things can be done and offer on Wikisource.
I'm pretty familliar with the global Wikisource dynamics and position but
If you have specific points you want to focus or examples of partnership
with GLAM (past, current or planned ; good or bad), don't hesitate to share
them with me. Any comments or advices are welcome too.

For me, the Wikidata linking part seems (maybe the most) important. That's

For Commons category, you can maybe use P373

Re: [Wikisource-l] VisualEditor in Page: pages

2016-06-29 Thread Nicolas VIGNERON
Thank you very much Tpt !

I've tried it.
There is still a lot of work and things to improve but we're in the good
direction.

One quick suggestion: indicate more explicitely that you need to click on
the banner to change the proofread quality-color (maybe by putting the edit
button directly in the banner).
