I think there is already a bug at https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23217; this issue has deeper history even just here on wikitech-l than a mere missing bug that contributes to it not having been done in a long time. An'n 03.10.2010 17:47, hett Roan Kattouw schreven: 2010/10/3 Roan Kattouwroan.katt...@gmail.com: I don't understand why this would be insulting, but whatever... Following the causes.com link clarifies this: it's a Russian influence thing. If you are interested in the facts: There are 19.7 million speakers of Romanian in Romania. There are 2.6 million speakers of Romanian in Moldova (they call their language either Romanian or Moldovan, but it's the same language as in Romania). Both Romania and Moldova write the language with Romanian script. Then there are 177,000 speakers of Romanian living in Transnistria. Transnistria is officially part of Moldova, but it is a de facto independant state. Transnistria's population is about one third Romanian, one third Russian and one third Ukrainian. When Moldova became independant in 1991 the Russian group in Transnistria feared that their privileged status would change and that Romanian would become the most privileged language in the new state. A civil war broke out and supported by Russian troops Transnistria became a de facto independant state. This state holds Russophile policies and the Romanian language (called Moldovan) is written in Cyrillic. The Cyrillic script was introduced by the Soviets as a measure of cultural Sovietization. So for the Romanians and Moldovans the Cyrillic script is a symbol of Soviet cultural imperialism and more importly a dividing line that excludes 177,000 speakers of their language from participation in Romanian-language cultural affairs (at least in its written forms). mo.wp is Cyrillic but uses the code 'mo' that stands for Moldovan and would thus in theory cover all 2.78 million speakers in both Moldova and Transnistria. For Moldovans mo.wp feels like Wikimedia tries to promote Cyrillic in Moldova. The code 'mo' by the way is deprecated because ISO recognized it as being identical with Romanian. As automatic script conversion is possible, there's really no reason to keep mo.wp at all. You can just remove it completely. That requires just one small edit to the subdomain mapping. Should be much easier than a rename to 'mo-cyrl' which still uses the deprecated code. Since there is currently no automatic conversion script and a very low likelyhood that Romanian Wikipedians would ever accept such a thing on their Wiki, I disagree. I think mo.wp should be moved, if anything (to mo-cyrl - or ro-cyrl, since mo is now deprecated). If and when a conversion script is made and implemented, it would make sense to me to delete it completely. -m. ___ Wikitech-l mailing list Wikitech-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikitech-l

If and when a conversion script is made and implemented, it would make sense to me to delete it completely. mo.wp has 401 articles, most of them stubs and substubs. None of the articles has been updated since 4 years. It's hardly a useful educative resource for anybody. If Romanians oppose an on-wiki conversion (a claim I can hardly contest) we can create a solution with more distance. Instead of the on-wiki solution with tabs we can create ro-cyrl as a wiki that mirrors ro.wps contents but is read-only and has Cyrillic conversion by default. That way ro.wp keeps the same and the Transnistrians get access to the full body of contents on ro.wp. The results won't be perfect if ro.wp doesn't use the conversion syntax e.g. for marking foreign names, but it'll be better than the current content of mo.wp for sure. The original request can be solved easily. It only became a long story because Wikimedia refused to take any action (or promised to solve the problem and didn't keep the promise).
