Marielle's hiring makes this post obsolete:

What is more, she is also helping new FOSS OPW candidates:

Thank you Marielle and thank you Editing team!

Gerard, what exactly do you mean? The only problem I know of is the fact that we
are still outputting content using the old serialization format for some
revisions. Changing the tag order is, strange as it may sound, needed to fix
that problem. Bugs:

Not yet, shall do that now.

Not going to lie, that sounds really cool. Can't wait to see that
finished.

[Wikitech-l] Major achievements during previous Mediawiki Hackathons

2014-10-28 Thread Sylvain Boissel
Hello,

I am currently drafting a short document about what is a Mediawiki
Hackathon. Could you please help me by pinpointing to me some of the
greatest / coolest tools or achievements that were made during previous
Wikimedia Hackathon?

Best regards,
Sylvain.

associated notes archived on the wiki, but you can check. ;-)

[Wikitech-l] Introduction for OPW (Collaborative spelling dictionary building tool)

2014-10-28 Thread Ankita Shukla
Hello!

I am Ankita Shukla, a Computer Science and Engineering student pursuing
the junior year of Bachelor of Technology at the Indian Institute of
Technology Roorkee, India. I had posted my announcement for the
project 'collaborative
spelling dictionary building tool' here
.

I have also set up the proposal page
 for the project
with help and guidance from my mentors. Since the project itself is quite
dependent on the community support and crowd-sourcing, therefore it would
be great to get started with considering the views of the community about
the same.

I'd be happy to have reviews and feedback from the community regarding the
proposal and the (feasibility of the) timeline in particular. I welcome any
suggestion towards the betterment of the project and am also ready to
discuss about any point which might not be very clear in the proposal. :)

Kindest regards

Thanks,
Ankita Shukla

Re: [Wikitech-l] Obsolete MediaWiki extensions

2014-10-28 Thread Federico Leva (Nemo)
Adding to what Skizzerz and Siebrand said: there are "only" 306
extensions in SVN of which we didn't know the status (including
usefulness) and back then I contacted all their authors:

If you see so many cases of extensions which should be migrated because
people want to use them but are having problems, you could make a new
list. http://wikiapiary.com can also help you select further SVN
extensions of relevance. It's also useful if you tell users to file bugs
for each extension they really need to get migrated.
When we have more information on the problem, we can see if a change in
process is needed (e.g. a proactive search for maintainers for some
extensions).

Nemo

P.s./premise 1: unlike Siebrand, I think most users will *not* get
themselves heard. That's why with WikiTeam I've been spidering the web
for years, to acquire all the information possible. It only took me 300
$ to get the last list of wikis:
. Now go use the data!
P.s./premise 2: it's a bit disturbing to hear "volunteers X _should_ be
interested in Y". The MediaWiki Cooperation is open for new members and
none of the above requires superpowers nor a bolla papale; if you think
an activity should be done under that group, join the group and to the
activity.
