[Wikitech-l] Discovery Weekly Update for the week starting 2017-09-25

2017-10-02 Thread Chris Koerner
Queridísimos amigos,
A slightly more digestible update this week. Particularly of note are the
discussions on English and Spanish Wikipedia about enabling the
feature.

==Discussions==

=== Search ===
* Erik manually speed up the process of moving results (categories)
in-between indexes in response to a bug filed for the same search result
listed twice in the same query, however, while this type of move is
underway, because there are tens of millions of changes, there will be
duplicates that show up. [0]
* Erik also fixed a bug where the tags were being 'eaten' in the
highlighted search preview output [1]
* Gehel fixed an issue that was found during the last cluster restart, when
the cluster failed to recover properly, by tuning the elasticsearch
recovery settings [2]
* David and Gehel fixed an issue where the api feature logs were not being
sent to both eqiad and codfw clusters [3]
* David finished up the large amount of work needed to be done to release
the 1.0 version of the ltr (learn to rank) plugin [4]

=== Analysis  ===
* Chelsy wrapped up the initial analysis of some concerns with the mobile
search dashboard data and wrote up next steps [5]

=== Portal ===
* Jan and Deb are planning next steps to kicking off automating the
Wikipedia.org portal updates [6]

=== Maps ===
* Paul has been investigating several issues for switching the
geoline/geoshape to a new schema and if we should remove the old
 kartotherian/render repo [7] [8]
* Discussions are continuing for enabling mapframe on English and Spanish
Wikipedia. [9] [10]

Thank you! It was really worth waiting a bit before filing. :-)

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Diversity Award for the mentoring program of the
2017 Wikimedia Hackathon in Vienna
To: wikimedi...@lists.wikimedia.org

Hello everyone!

We wanted to share some good news with you: Our international team around
the Wikimedia Hackathon mentoring program won the first Austrian Open
Source Award in the category "Diversity" [1].

The Austrian Open Source Award was established this year in order to raise
awareness and visibility for our local Open Source Communities and their
projects. The jury consisted of representatives from across the various
Open Communities in Austria (Open Knowledge, Linux, and Drupal among
others) and honoured outstanding projects in the categories Open Data, Open
Software, Open Hardware, and Diversity.

The Jury particularly mentioned our comprehensive documentation under a
free license which enables other event organizers to apply our ideas and
concepts and to build on them [2] [3].
We are very happy about this positive signal for inclusive events, which
make it easier for all newcomers to join our great communities and we hope
it encourages even more people to also make our other Wikimedia events more
and more newcomer friendly. A special thanks goes to our awesome mentors
who were the heart and soul of the mentoring program and the Hackathon!

For more information about what we learned around the mentoring program you
can also check out our post from the Wikimedia Blog [4].
